Knitting and More for the Homeless

Thank you Laura E for this thoughtful donation of goodies for our homeless friends.  Laura has been busy knitting cotton washcloths, hats, and scarves.  Please click to see details.  She has paired a couple of the hats with scarves and tied together to make a nice gift set.

She has a wonderful array of personal care items from toothpaste, and toothbrushes, to soap, band aides and more.  Band aides such a good idea.  She's also included female sanitary products and wipes.  Very nice selection of needed items.

And with the cold damp weather socks are such a plus.  She's included socks for both men and women.  Many thanks for your generous donation.

As always, please keep up the good work.  AND ...if you clicked to enlarge picture, did you notice the ray of sunshine?  We've not seen much of that lately, so am giving Laura credit for boxing some of that up along with her donation, lol.

It's a Family Affair

Thank you Hubby!  Hubby doesn't knit or crochet, but he said, I can do socks.  So socks he did.  A bakers dozen.  We've had nights and early mornings in the 30's already, so the need for warm things is indeed upon us.  To my way thinking, it's  seems to have come way to early this year.  Some trees are almost bare from leaves already down, and I have zero flowers left blooming in the yard........<Sigh>  Fall is here.  And from how busy the squirrels seem to be burying goodies throughout the yard, I fear that means winter won't be mild.

Thank you Hubby, 13 people will have warmer feet because of your donation.

It's a family affair.  This awesome knitted mobius/infinity scarf/cowl was knitted and donated by my Darling Daughter!   I LOVE the colors.  The yarn is soooooo nice and soft.   Click the picture to enlarge so you can see the details (remember you can do that with all pictures on the blog).   There some nice texture, I don't remember what stitch pattern she used.    Whomever receives this awesome mobius/infinity scarf/cowl will be thrilled.  They'll be warm and stylish.

AND, she's been busy knitting up some yarn from my stash.  LOVE these colors together, but, am trying to determine how to put together for a ghan.  Sometimes, that's interesting part of using up stash.  Knit or crochet until you run out of yarn, and then see what you can put together.  You can see 9 strips of the beautiful variegated, and 5 strips of the solid blue.   This design is funky in that the strips on the left side are vertical and the stripes on the rights side are horizontal.  Plus the placement of blue strips isn't uniform.

This possible design is with only 4 of the solid blue strips and 10 of the variegated.   The  2 sides are even in that they each have the same number of blue and variegated strips, but again you have the vertical vs the horizontal.

Open to opinions of which design you like best and or other suggestions.  I also need to check my stash, as I think I have some purple, which I think I would like to use for edging and joining.

AND, if you're a regular reader, you know I always name the afghans that are assembled.  How about Purple Haze for this one?

Again thank you Dear Hubby and Darling Daughter!  Keep up the good work and know it makes a difference to many.

Socks, Cotton Wash Cloths and More for our Homeless Friends

Thank you Sue S, for this awesome donation to help Ohio's homeless.  Sue has knitted the always popular corner to corner cotton washcloth, Grandma's favorite.  As you probably know, these popular cotton cloths have several purposes.  When a person lives in the elements and get's a night in a shelter and get's a hot shower, these are far softer on their skin.  Living out in the elements can be very hard on your skin.  When someone/family leaves shelter living for a permanent housing situation, they're given a welcome home pack and these cotton cloths often make their way into those packs.  They can be used in the shower and or in the kitchen.

Sue has included a nice variety of personal care items.  One thing imparticular I wanted to point out (please click to enlarge the picture, so you can what I'm referring to), those 2 blue packs...they're small first aid packs with Band-Aids wipes.  What a great idea.

Sue has included some super warm heavy duty socks that will truly be needed as the weather continues to cool off.  She's also knitted a scarf.

Many thanks Sue S for your long time support of Bridge and Beyond and Ohio's homeless.  Please keep up the good work, and know you continue to make a difference.

Mother and Daughter Team Up to Help Homeless

Thank you Tara B for this donation of 12 pairsof socks!  Let me back up a bit.  A while back Tara had a brilliant idea.  Instead of shopping buying socks to add to her crocheted donations; she would set up a repeat order on Amazon and the socks would be shipped to me.......she pays no shipping costs that way as well.  I thought it was a wonderful idea.

So the first shipment came, I took a picture and somehow when it was being transferred from my phone to the computer it vanished.  (please scroll to previous post with more info on this.  It's happened twice recently, and I don't know why.

Then her 2nd shipment came so I photographed them both together.  Still had the 1st package having not yet put in the bags for delivery.

Tara tells her mother Lara about Bridge and Beyond, and Lara who taught Tara to crochet decided she would join in.  She crocheted this traditional ripple, always a favorite.  This is sc back stitch, which is how you get the awesome texture.  I LOVE this, it reminds me of my Mother, because she taught me to crochet back in the day how to knit and crochet.  A nice memory.  AND I love the primary colors she used, so bright and cherry.

She also crocheted hats, and headbands.  And she included socks and some personal care items with the her donation.

Lara M. is our newest pair of helping hands.  Thrilled to have you join us and please know that you are making an important difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Many thanks, and please keep up the good work.

Knitting in Florida Helps Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Laura E for this awesome donation.  As you can, she's been very busy knitting hats, and and cotton wash cloths.  AND she's included lots of good personal care items: wipes, tooth paste, tooth brushes, soap, tissues, razors and 1st aid!  Love the idea of 1st aid.  Please click folks to see the details.  1st aid isn't something I had thought about before so wanted to point that out.   AND she also included panty liners for women, which I understand to be something always in short demand.

Kudos Laura for thinking about different ways to help these folks!

This was to be 1 of 2 pictures, as she sent 2 boxes of donations.  I have 2 notes and the counts of everything; but I've had a picture problem (2nd time in recent weeks here on my computer).  Actually, I'm not sure if the problem is my phone or the computer.  When I transfer the pictures from my phone to the computer I've had a few (just recently) disappear.  I've tried finding them on the computer and the phone without success.  Literally, it was there, I saw it and then poof.  Very frustrating.

Is this photo there are 23 pairs of socks and there were 11 in the lost photo.
There are 6 hats in this photo and there were 9 in the other one.
There are 4 cloths in this photo and there were 5 in other one.
There were personal care items in both photo's.

Perhaps eventually I'll find the photo in an unrelated file on the computer, who knows.  But, I don't know way this has happened twice in recent weeks.

Thank you Laura E, for being so generous and please know you're truly are making a difference.  Am so sorry about the missing photo.

Crocheted Donation from Upstate New York

Look at this wonderful donation from our good friend from upstate New York, Annemarie D.  Annemarie's been a long time and generous supporter of Bridge and Beyond and Ohio's Homeless.    She's included something for everyone here with her crocheted donation.  A couple of sets of matching hats and scarves...one set even has a pair of fingerless mitts.  Cotton socks which are always in need and appreciated, as well as cotton washcloths in her donation.  She's been very busy with her crochet hook.

Many thanks Annemarie for your generosity and your on going support.  Special thanks too for tagging your hats with size, as well as her mitts.  I nudge everyone to do that, pair your mittens and slippers and always tag those and your hats.  It's a huge time saver in getting donated items to the right people.

Special thanks too Nikki for hand delivering to my door!  I got this donation delivered pronto to Rae, our friend who prepares hot meals on Sat mornings for those living out in the elements.  She was thrilled, as she knows the need of those folks.

Thank you Nikki, and please keep up the good work.

LOVE this fun afghan.  Look at all the colors...bits of this, bits of that, solids, and variegated colors.  Truly a little of everything.  So fun, so bright, and very cheery.  Thank you AnnaMarie from New York for this delightful crocheted afghan.  When I opened it, it really made me smile.

First Aid and More for the Homeless

Thank you Tammy S for this thoughtful and generous donation of goodies.  Tammy is our newest pair of helping hands and hails from the state of Pennsylvania.  Welcome to Bridge and Beyond.  LOVE these scarves.  Folks click to see details, she has crocheted using I believe triple crochet front and back post to create a wonderful texture to her nice large scarves.  These are all sized large enough for men!  They are thick due to the texture.
AND 18 pairs of very nice heavy warm socks.  Each pack has 3 pairs of socks, thus 18 pairs of feet will now be warmer.  Warm dry feet can sure make someone more comfortable.
AND look at this wonderful selection of personal care items.  Klenex, hand wipes that can be used when our homeless friends have no water to wash up.  Soap and lotion.......AND first aid kits!  That is something I've never thought about before, but think it's a wonderful idea and something that be well received.

Many thanks Tammy for your thoughtfulness, sure hope to see you here often on Bridge and Beyond, and please keep up the good work.

Hats, Socks and Afghans Aid Homeless

Thank you Sheelagh for this thought and very generous donation.  What a pretty afghan.  I'm drawing a blank at the moment what this method/stitch is called.  Lovely colors.  One of the ladies will be thrilled to get this and curl up with it.  It looks so springy right now which has me hopeful, as I'm soooooooo tired of winter. Entrelac Crochet.  Took me a while to think about what it was.  I personally have never used this method, but did a google search for a video.  Most of the video's on how to do this are 30-40 minutes long.  But, I did find this shorter version........whether this is enough to get someone going or not I'm not sure, but thought I'd post in case someone wants to check it out.  Click Here
She's also been busy knitting hats.  Tried to turn up the brim on the far left hat so you can see it's a different color on the inside.  It's reversible...and or just really warm because it's doubled.  The two black hats are so cute with a brim.  Please do click to enlarge so you can see the details of these hats.

Sheelagh has also included socks!  Yeah, we love getting socks to warm people's feet.  Nothing worse than cold, wet feet.  And if you're living in the elements or spending nights in a shelter but out and about during the day waiting until the time you can go in...........a change into warm socks is heaven.

Wonderful donation....but wink wink, there's more.  Do pop back in again tomorrow to see the rest of her goodies.  I'm trying not to add too many pictures at a time to help the loading time of the blog.

Socks, Scarves, and Stuff make good Donations

So many words that start with the letter S and make good donations for our homeless friends.  SOCKS!  Socks, white, gray, black.......colors matter not, but socks are an item needed all year long.  Store bought vs hand made socks can make a huge difference is someone's comfort, and their health.  Remember anyone living out in the elements has to content with limited if any ability to do laundry and therefore a clean dry pair of socks is like heaven to them.  Also think how miserable we all are if our feet are wet and cold.  This is a problem spring, summer, winter or fall.  Men and women who live out in the elements need socks, as do those with nights here and there in shelters.  Socks are also something people who don't knit or crochet can donate.

Scarves.......men, women, and children need scarves.  Not babies or toddlers, but school age........teens etc are in need of scarves.  Scarves can be knitted or crocheted.  They need to be long enough to wrap around as in the pictures below.  Please review the guidelines int he scarf tab for information about size, colors, and fibers.  It's important our scarves meet the needs of those we serve.  No white, no lacy open stitches, and no novelty yarn please.  They aren't practical for those trying to stay warm, those without ability to do laundry.

If you have questions, please sing out by sending me an email or by using the contact option in the right sidebar of this blog.

Shampoo is another S word that makes for a good donation.  Again, an item that non crafters can donate.  You can purchase shampoo, and or save shampoo from your travels to donate.

Will be catching up with donations that were delivered while I was out of town over the next few days folks, so please pop in often.  Then I will resume The ABC posting with the letter T.

**The counts on our progress bars are current, the percentages not quite. I'll not be figure the percentages with each update of numbers, but will be updating again next at least by the 20th. I have in fact made a reminder not on my cell phone for the 20th of each month to do percentages. If we're at a milestone, or I just have extra time I may do it more often...but certainly at that scheduled time.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
