How to Knit

Thought for you crocheters out there I'd post this very beginning how to knit video. Some of you have expressed an interest. However, I do not cast on or off the way they're showing in the video. Perhaps this will help you all want to try your hand at knitting something for the homeless.

Hey knitters....chime in how do you cast on? I cast on with my needles, the old fashion way. I also cast off that way. How bout you?

I find the music with this obnoxious so you might want to turn off your sound.

Let me know if any of you try your hand with this after watching the video to make scarves for our cause.

Looming Fingerless Mitts

The above video shows you how to make the awesome fingerless mitts Anna W made (please scroll back to the previous post.  This video is a bit long, but it's pretty easy to skip to the point you need to see for the next step in the pattern.  You have to over look her bird must be tweeting as she's talking and some of the time it's hard to see, as the camera work isn't the best; but.......with that said it's helpful and I think you can still follow it.

The link to her written pattern is HERE

These are especially nice, as they really extend up the arm and would be warmer than short ones.  I asked Anna for the pattern she used, plus.......I know many folks use those looms, so wanted to share this.

Sorry folks for the gap here on the blog with posts.  I was out of town unable to post for longer than expected.  Then once back, had too much catch up to do.  AND sadly there were some spamy comments to deal with.  Thank you Sandie P for letting me know.  I was able to get them deleted.......so we can now get back to business here on Bridge and Beyond.

Thank you all for patience.  It's hard to believe kids are back in school.  Where did summer go?  It seems with each passing year, it goes faster...the sad part of that.....to my way of thinking, we know bad weather isn't probably too far off.  AND I like summer, am not a fan of cold, winter or the white stuff.  Pretty sure our Homeless Friends aren't fans of it either.

So if you're one who likes to take summers off with your knitting and crocheting...I fear it's time to gear up again folks.

Again Thank you Anna for sharing the pattern you used as well as the video.  Much appreciated.  And thank you Sandie for alerting me about the spamy comments.

Homeless Man's Belongings and Pollution, Blogging in Alphabetical Order

Today's letter in our blogging in alphabetical order is P.  I focused on Pollution.  When I viewed this video, that's what first came to mind.  This jogger, initially named #Jogger Joe and later identified as Henry William Sintay is polluting.  Does he actually think he's helping clean up trash...or what he thinks is trash by throwing it in Lake Merritt in Oakland California?

  • Yes, some of the stuff, the personal belongings of a homeless man may appear to be trash to walkers, runners etc that frequent the area; but how does breaking the bottles and spreading them about help?
  • How does stealing personal belongings that aren't yours help?
  • How does polluting The Lake seem like a good idea?
  • How can things like this be fixed?   Are there not enough trash cans around for the homeless man to put his actual trash in?
  • What a cruel and thoughtless thing for this #joggerJoe, #HenryWilliamSintay to do.  I'm glad he was arrested and put in jail and fined.
  • Doing a google search produces several articles and other video's.  Apparently This Henry William Sintay arrest is for first degree robbery, he's also assaulted someone, tried to steal a cell phone.  Thus the large bail at $100,000.00.
  • In one clip he says he's cleaning up trash and pretends not to know it's a homeless person's belongings........in another clip he says the man has taken up permanent residence in this area.  So clearly he knew it was just "trash".
  • Homeless person is Greg Markson known to people in the area as a peaceful homeless man who goes by the name of Drew (which I saw spelled a few different ways in my google search of articles).
  • JJ Harris is the person who did the filming.
  • When Greg Markson returned to what had been his tidy camp (according to those who interacted with him on a regular basis), he stuff had been destroyed.  Locals brought him fresh blankets to help him through the weekend.
**This is the same park where a White Woman recently called the police on Black picnickers who were grilling out.  You might remember his video went viral.  Speculation is, this White JoggerJoe, Henry William Sintay is yet another racist incident, as the homeless man who's camp was destroyed is a Black Man.

Crocheted Hats and Scarves Warm Homeless

AWESOME, another fabulous donation from our good friend Karen S.  Blues and Gray are perfect for either men and women.  I've blogged before about this cool technique of how she mixes colors.  Please click to enlarge the picture so you can see what I mean.  There's a dark and light side to the scarves....soooooooooo cool.  She accomplishes this with a crochet hook that has a hook on each end.

I find this such a cool look that I've googled it, watched a u-tube video and someday will give it a try myself.  The lady on the u-tube video says it goes by many names, Cro-hooking, Crochenit, and the stitch is Reversible Tunisian (also Reflective Reversible).

I've tried to get a code to embed the video here for you; but....seems it didn't work.  Will take another look.  Edited to say...yippee, scroll down it worked.

PLEASE Karen keep up the good work.  And special thanks for the nice tags you put with size on your hats.

2016 Donations:
HATS: 377-2=375
SCARVES (Gators, Infinity Scarves)295-2=293

**We started the year with the number of items we had donated last year, 2016; and will subtract our donations from that.  Using the end number for 2016 as the goal for the each item.  So, as the year continues you will see numbers decrease.  Our goal is to meet and surpass the number of items donated last year.**

Don Gould Homeless Musician, Sarasota Florida.

Please turn on your sound and enjoy this.  Proving once again, Homeless People are just that, people like us deserving of respect and not scorn.  This very talented man, is homeless, but that doesn't make him any less talented.  This is Don Gould and his story was told by Deborah Montesano in Sarasota Florida, after Aurone Henry took the initiative.

Aurone stopped, listed,d and filmed Don playing beautifully.  She posted her video on u-tube and when I saw this (remember I schedule posts ahead), the video had been viewed over 4 million times.  So many of us look away, we don't want to see the homeless person.  If we see them, we might be reminded it could be us, or perhaps if we see them; we feel compelled to do something....and it's so much easier to just look away.  It, the problem of homelessness doesn't exist if you don't see it.

Don wanted to be a music teacher, and was a student in Spring Arbor College in Michigan.  He learned to play many instruments from the piccolo to the tuba, but had to leave school before he graduated because he ran out of money.  Later, he got married and started a family.  Then his life took a horrible turn, a turn that could and does affect many of us.  His wife died in 1998, and for him, all was lost.  She was young, and his words, "he lost it."  That led to substance abuse, which lead to his 3 year old son being taken away from him.  A man loved by his wife, his son, a family man....and now he has nothing.

He made his way to Florida after losing his son, though each and everyday he thought about him.  He plays and puts his hat out to collect a little money on a public piano.  Aurone captured his magic on the piano, which has lead to auditions and a job at a piano bar.  Perhaps this will be the 2nd turn around in his life and help get him off the streets.  Perhaps his son would now be 18 will see the video, perhaps they'll re-connect.

Wishing the best for this talent man, Don Gould who life kicked down.  Help us all to understand being homeless is truly something that can happen to anyone.  Help us, as a nation to do what we can to help and to not label them as dangerous, nasty, bums and all the other horrible words you often see associated with being homeless.

Toothless and Homeless and Amazing, Doug Seegers

Being Homeless is not the life people lay in bed at night and dream about.  People become homeless for a variety of reasons, we do what we can to help along the way; but every now and then you see, read or hear something like this..............something that makes you smile and say Thank You God.

Please turn on your speakers and enjoy!

The story's Link is HERE

And Proceeds To Blow Everyone Away

This is Doug Seegers, an out-of-work carpenter who was born in New York. He’s a man in his sixties and up until recently he lived off the money he was given by people in the streets of Nashville. In 2012, Aaron Espe, a musician from Minnesota, posted a YouTube video of Doug singing a song he wrote many years ago called “Going Down To The River.” His vibe and his haunting voice made the video go popular, and everyone got the chance to hear his unique voice. This time, he got together with country stars Jill Johnson and Magnus Carlson to sign his original song. The YouTube description says, “This man deserves to get a roof over his head so help him become famous by spreading the word!” It makes me very happy to see someone like him is starting succeed in the most unexpected way!

Knitting, Crocheting, and Looming Help Homeless

Thank you Karen S for this thoughtful donation.  Karen has been busy looming hats, and crocheting scarves.  As always, kudos for taking time to make your cute size tags for your hats.  Please click to enlarge picture folks so you can see what I mean.  She's used a nice variety of colors and sizes, something for everyone.

While it is Spring, and weather is getting better around the country, I want to let you all know; we're still having nights below freezing.  In fact 2 of the last 3 nights have gotten down into the 20's here.  Yesterday morning it was only 24 at 8:30 am, so the need is most definitely still there for warm items for our homeless friends.

It's been awhile since I've shared the video on how to make these two colored scarves.  If you've not seen it, wanted to give you the chance to watch.  This stitch has many names, two sided crochet is just one.  Click HERE for the video.

Many thanks Karen for you continued support of Bridge and Beyond.

Hope you all are watching our numbers climb in our goal graphs, it's exciting to me each time I add more and figure our percentage.

Fellow Ohioan Helps Warm Homeless

Thank you Tara B for your thoughtful donation of crocheted scarves to help Ohio's Homeless.  Tara is our newest pair of helping hands.  Welcome Tara, we're thrilled to have you join us here on Bridge and Beyond.  Tara is also a fellow Buckeye!

These scarves are nice and warm.  The gray scarf is well suited for a man and the blue and orange for a lady.

As a fellow Buckeye, Tara knows how cold and damp our weather is......and how many days we go without seeing sunshine.  Thank you Tara for using your skills to help those less fortunate.

Hope to see you here often on Bridge and Beyond.  Please keep up the good work.

**Edited to add the stitch used is a Feather Stitch, thank you Cynthia Biggs for finding the name and video of how to do it."  And to Sandie P for finding the code to add the video here for you.  It's an interesting stitch and since several ask me about it, thought I'd share what it is and how to do it...in case you're interested.

Puppets, Food for Thought?

Spotted this cute little Teddy Puppet the other day on a u-tube video.  I saved the picture and tried to write down the directions, the video was really very poorly done, so ...need to go and re-check.  But, let's think out loud.  People knit and crochet cute little stuff animals, though it's not something I've suggested we do in the past...young kids aren't a our primary focus here on Bridge and Beyond.  My first thought was these could be cute, not need to be stuffed, and I think something that could be a fairly quick project???  But, then I thought......puppets, I never purchased a puppet for any of my 3 nephews when they were young, or years later when my daughter was young, or eons later when my nephews had children...........so the question is, as cute as I think this is, would it be used?  Do kids play with puppets?  Would it be helpful for the first couple of nights say in family shelter?

Please hold nothing back folks in your comments...is this a good idea?  Is it a waste of time and yarn?  I also plan to chat with our contact person at Homeless Families Foundation to get her take.  Is this something a social worker might use to chat with a child who doesn't want to chat vs something a child would actually play with?

I try to make our focus here on Bridge and Beyond warm items, things that will help keep people alive,  make them less miserable either out in the elements or in a not so warm shelter...so this isn't that.  I don't want to go to far a field; but thought it worth us all discussing it.

Have you ever purchased a puppet for a child?  If so is it forgotten or played with?

Did you all notice...yesterday Bridge and Beyond hit 1500 blog posts!  What a milestone.

Hats, Socks and Afghans Aid Homeless

Thank you Sheelagh for this thought and very generous donation.  What a pretty afghan.  I'm drawing a blank at the moment what this method/stitch is called.  Lovely colors.  One of the ladies will be thrilled to get this and curl up with it.  It looks so springy right now which has me hopeful, as I'm soooooooo tired of winter. Entrelac Crochet.  Took me a while to think about what it was.  I personally have never used this method, but did a google search for a video.  Most of the video's on how to do this are 30-40 minutes long.  But, I did find this shorter version........whether this is enough to get someone going or not I'm not sure, but thought I'd post in case someone wants to check it out.  Click Here
She's also been busy knitting hats.  Tried to turn up the brim on the far left hat so you can see it's a different color on the inside.  It's reversible...and or just really warm because it's doubled.  The two black hats are so cute with a brim.  Please do click to enlarge so you can see the details of these hats.

Sheelagh has also included socks!  Yeah, we love getting socks to warm people's feet.  Nothing worse than cold, wet feet.  And if you're living in the elements or spending nights in a shelter but out and about during the day waiting until the time you can go in...........a change into warm socks is heaven.

Wonderful donation....but wink wink, there's more.  Do pop back in again tomorrow to see the rest of her goodies.  I'm trying not to add too many pictures at a time to help the loading time of the blog.

Thank you Karen S, Crocheted Scarves Help the Homeless

Thank you Karen S!  I bet by now most of you who frequent my blog, Bridge and Beyond are able to recognize Karen's donations before I give her name!  Her signature stitch, is very recognizable.  I've posted video's a few times of how to do this stitch of many names.

Seriously this stitch is known by lots of different names:
Cro-hooking
Crochenit
Reversable Tunisian Crochet
Double Ended Crochet.........are just some of them.  Click here for the video if  you've not watched before or want to see how it's done.

Karen has also included a toothbrush and paste.  Which brings me to something about personal care items I thought I would pass along to you all.  I've often mentioned collecting those little samples as you travel for leisure or business.......I've done it myself often when traveling; but........apparently some hotel chains are starting to do away with that for environmental reasons.  In an effort to reduce the plastic, they are going for larger, refillable containers with soap, shampoo and conditioner.  I know Marriott has announced that it's phasing it in and I've seen in thus far in a few hotels in my travels.  I'm not familiar with others; but thought I would mention it here, so you can at least be aware.  Due to being members, we always stay at Marriott's.  I would imagine other chains are doing the same thing?

Many thanks Karen for your donation, and your on going support of Bridge and Beyond and Ohio's homeless.  Please know we truly appreciate you, and your skillful hands.  Please keep as the good work and know you do make a difference in the lives of many.

Helping Kids in Need Buy School Books

I've posted before about the need for text book for kids without. I earn amazon gift cards from converting points through Superpoints. Some of you joined me on Superpoints. Thank you to those who've joined and do their daily spins on the lucky wheel. It may not seem like much, but it does help. When you spin and win, either my Darling Daughter also wins, or I do. Depending on which one of us you joined under. In both cases those those winning spins earn points which earn Amazon Gift Cards and help towards the purchase of a books like you see Linkabove. This group of books was for 1 student and even used cost in excess of $700.00, but we were able to help with that cost. To date I've earned $100.00 using Superpoints, and DD has earned 70.00 ish. The need continues and so we continue. We spin daily, we do surveys, we watch video's, and sometimes we've bought Groupons through Superpoints and get awesome deals for an evening out at a reduced cost AND get Superpoints! I blogged about a night out at Huntington Park Here. Check it out.

Additionally, both my Darling Daughter and I have joined Swag Bucks. We don't spin there, but we do watch video's, play games, do surveys and other similar things. What earns swag bucks there collectively is doing searches. You can can use Swag Bucks as your search engine and win Swag Bucks, you can add the Swag Bucks Tool bar. Both methods work well and earn you extra Swag Bucks. Once again, those Swag Bucks are being converted into Amazon Gift Cards and those too are helping with the purchase of books for kids in need.

Join one or both, you can help the cause...........AND earn gift cards you can use for your own family. Both Superpoints and Swag Bucks have excellent coupons you can clip and print, and or attach to your local grocery loyalty card to save you and your family money. Both are easy to and quick to join. I'm happy to help you get started, so if you join....sing out. If you've already joined to help the cause...many thanks!

Pop back tomorrow....and everyday to see the wonderful items good folks like yourself knit and crochet and donate to those who need our help.

You don't need to be a knitter or a crocheter to help by joining either Superpoints or Swag Bucks.

**Would Linda J from Texas please make contact, or leave a comment with your email addy. I've searched high and low over the last week trying to find your email.**

Matching Hat and Scarf Sets for Ohio Homeless

Thank you Karen S for this thoughtful donation of hats and scarf sets.  If you've been to this blog before, chances are, you've seen Karen's signature style.  The scarves are made using the method called Cro-Hooking, Crochenit, Reversible Tunisian, Reflective Reversible, and Double Ended Crochet.  Apparently there are a raft of names for this method.  The scarves are crocheted, but with a crochet hook at each end of the needle.  I can see why it's called Reflective Reversible...look at the light and dark sides of the scarf.  The feel of scarf is added warmth, it's a bit thicker then crocheting would be, from my touch.

In this post, I have a u-tube video showing you how to perform this technique if you'd like to give it a try.  Until Karen started donating hat and scarves sets to Bridge and Beyond, it was not a technique I had seen or heard of.  Let us know if you give it a try.  I must admit, I still haven't, though it's on my list of things to try.  I really like the look.

Click Here for my post with the video

Please keep up the good work Karen and know you are so very much appreciated.

Blogging in Alphabetical Order, U= USA Today, Hope and Soap, and Janson Winter

Blogging in Alphabetical order today brings us to the letter U.  There'a USA Today article and video, some of which I saw on Facebook.  There's also a CNN story, a separate Facebook Page with information about a man named Jason Winter, a trailer, homeless being able to take a shower.

Jason started out small with a friends collecting clothes, warm items as it was winter at the time.  As time passed and the weather changed he asked some of the homeless folks what they really needed or wanted if they pick.  They said showers.  He's out fitted a portable shower he can haul around that holds 125 gallons of water, generally enough for 27 showers.

Jason started a company called Hope and Soap.  Every Sat morning he and friends and volunteers have block parties.  He cooks up hotdogs, puts on music and people line up to get a shower and while waiting can select from donated clean cloths to put on once they've showered.  The USA today article I read was written by Daniella Barker.

Take a look at the video, associated with Daniella's article(link above), or look it up on Facebook, google for the CNN article.  It's a wonderful story of human kindness.  With all the negative we see and hear daily, it's nice to read some positive stories about the good that people do.

Jason has his block parties in Atlanta.

PLEASE Stop, I'm freezing

My apology to the folks who got here to the post before I had actually written it.  I schedule things ahead 99.9% of the time, and had this in que, but never got back to complete it before it was published.
This video sadden me so much when I first saw it, that I backed away from writing about it, thus it was there in que ...waiting on me.  This video follows yesterdays post about a man dying.......dying literally from being homeless, from being out in the cold exposed to the elements for too long without whatever he needed to survive.  I don't know if Michael (see yesterday's post) would have lived if he had another meal, or warmer/dry socks or a different place to sleep.........but it gives me pause thinking about it.

And now this?  A child, in New York in the elements for hours (2 I believe it was), before someone came to his rescue.  And it wasn't a wealth person who came to his rescue, it wasn't someone with a good job, it wasn't someone with a child that age at home, it wasn't  with a roof over their head.......no, it was a caring homeless man with little to share, but willing to share it.  He had compassion, he shared a hug, he asked questions, he gave up his coat.  He understood this person needed what he had, he understood he could help.  He understood, that while he couldn't solve the problem and make it go away.........he understood he could do what he could do and that what he could do mattered.

This was an experiment, so this child wasn't going to freeze because it was an experiment.......but all those who passed him by, who stopped to stare didn't know that.  I guess none of us knows how we would react in the same type of situation, I only hope my humanity would overcome and that I would do the right thing.  We are sometimes afraid of those folks who are homeless, because we don't them.  We don't know if it's safe to approach them.  Thankfully this caring homeless man didn't let his fear (if he had any) get in the way of caring for another human being in need.

We can't solve the problem, but we can do, what we can do  AND IT MATTERS.

Puppets and Personal Care for Homeless

This little puppet was photographed some time back and previously posted here on this blog, but I thought I would revisit it with you all.  Look how cute it is.  This one is knitted, but would think crocheting one would work just as well.  Puppets, certainly aren't going to keep people warm, but wouldn't it make a cute item for small children spending a night in a shelter?  Small, soft, and perhaps comforting.  Something I presumed to be easier for families to hold onto as they move about from day to day with temporary shelter situations.  Might it be an item that would help a child through the night of uncertainty?  This is something I would suggest we strive to make tons of, but something I do think would be nice for the shelters to have on hand.

When I spotted this on my blog from some time back, I didn't see a pattern for it, but will do some looking around.  In the meantime, looking at it might be enough for some of our experienced knitters and or crocheters to wing it and make one.

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-knit-a-teddy-bear-hand-puppet/

If above link works, it's to a video and what looks to be very similar pattern for a puppet.

Here's a link to a free pattern on Ravelry.  You can create a free account there

Personal Care items is something men, women, and children need and use all year long.  There are used by folks living out in the elements, as well as those who obtain a night in a shelter.  AND they are needed when families transition from shelter living to a permanent housing situation.  Personal care items can be purchased, and collected whenever you visit hotels on business and or vacations.  Shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, mouth wash, combs, chapstick, shaving cream, razors, sunscreen, female products, soap are some of the items we donate all year long.  These are also items that non knitters and crocheters can help with.

**The counts on our progress bars are current, the percentages not quite. I'll not be figure the percentages with each update of numbers, but will be updating again next at least by the 20th. I have in fact made a reminder not on my cell phone for the 20th of each month to do percentages. If we're at a milestone, or I just have extra time I may do it more often...but certainly at that scheduled time.

Donating Colorful Knitted Hats off the Loom

Thank you Sandie from Florida!  Hats and hats and hats!  Sandie has knitted these hats of many colors on her loom.  Love it when our friends in sunshine states make us nice warm goodies for our cold homeless here in Ohio.  Lots of heads will be warmed because of this thoughtful donation.  18 heads, as a matter of fact will be warmer.  Many thanks Sandie and please keep up the good work.

Folks if you missed yesterday's cute video about yarn and our yarn stashes...please scroll back and have a look.  It's quite humerus.

You all may have noticed it's been awhile since we've had a post every day, that's because donations are down.  Typically they do fall off during the summer months and I try to keep things active with other information here; but even with that this summer we had fairly large gaps of no new posts.  Hoping with Labor Day Weekend here, which signals for most of us back to school, end of summer, fall and football; that people will welcome yarn back into their daily activities.

I'd like to push once again for people to visit, to read, and to COMMENT.  Those are all things you can do even when time is short to knit or crochet.  It does indeed help the blog and it's placement.  If you don't comment, we don't know that you've visited, or read new information.  You do not need to be a blogger to comment.  You do not need to be computer savvy to leave a comment.  It's fast and it's easy.  PLEASE, take time to read the tabs of the items you're making so the items you make and donate comply with the guidelines.

Happy Labor Day one and all, if you're traveling be safe

Arrests for Feeding The Homeless

Am trying to add the video and story to this picture.  Another very sad example of things that are wrong.  This is yet another city in Florida that arrests and fines citizens trying to feed those in need.  I posted recently that Ft. Lauderdale arrested a 90+ year old man, and this is another sad tail from Daytona Beach in Florida.

Just returned from an out of state wedding and vacation and collected boxes at the post office from Sheelagh S, RoseMarie, Dianne L, Sally B, Marsha M, and Sandra R.  Additionally I received drop offs from Jenny C, and Tristi K.  All these donations will be photographed and blog posts forthcoming.  Please stay tuned.  Thank you ladies.

If the embedded link doesn't work, please try to do a search and read about this sad and growing situation of lawmakers and the police that make the arrest of people doing good.

The Huge Need for Shelters, Growing in Central Ohio

Men, Women, and Children Homeless for a variety of reasons.  Men, Women and Children cold, hungry and homeless often don't know where they will sleep, if they will be protected, where their next meal will come from.

This is a story and video that appeared recently in local news.

Can you help?  If you don't crochet or knit, can you help?  Can you donate funds?  If you're not able to donate funds you can still help.  Tell your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, your family members.  Talk about the problem, blog about the problem, Facebook about the problem...

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
