Busy Hands in Florida Aid Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Susan A from Florida for this wonderful and very generous donation of knitted warm goodies.  Susan has been very busy as you can see.  She's knitted hats, scarves, mittens, and slippers.  She's included several styles of slippers, some appropriate for men others more appropriate for women.  NICE!  Love the variety in sizes and colors you've chosen for all your goodies, many people will be kept warmer because of your donation.  Thank you also for taking the time to attach tags with sizes for your hats, and slippers, much appreciated.

Susan's also included toothbrushes.  Personal care items are always needed and a great way for someone who doesn't knit or crochet to help.

AND you know how excited I get when we get donations of mittens, truly an item we never get enough of.  Folks just the other day I had a request for mittens for kids, so if you're about to cast on might I nudge you to knit/crochet some mittens for children?

Please keep up the good work Susan, hope to see you here often on Bridge and Beyond.

**Susan tells me she used Nola's Slipper Pattern for the sock like bootie style slippers.  I always enjoy knowing, as I know many of you do as well what patterns people have used and liked.

Donations Help the Homeless

Thank you Dorothy M!  What a wonderful and thoughtful donation of goodies you've knitted up for our homeless and others in need.  Dorothy has been a long time supporter of Bridge and Beyond, we so appreciate her efforts.  She's knitted and crocheted slippers, mittens, and hats.  You know how excited I get when someone has the ability to knit mittens!  She's also donated much needed hand warmers, socks, rain poncho's and personal care items.  Love the nice manly colors you've chosen for the hats and that you nicely tagged your mittens, slippers, and hats with the size!

Keep up the good work Dorothy, YOU are awesome!

Folks when I made deliveries yesterday to Homeless Families Foundation I saw first hand how some of our hand crafted donations are being used.  Not only does Homeless Families Foundation work with families one on one to help them with housing, job search and training....but those in the area in need, who may not be "their" clients are able to enter the entryway (sorta of room between 2 doors) where some of our goods are laid out so those outside and cold can come in to obtain what they need.  I recognized some of our work and it brought a smile to my face.  They don't want to shut the locals out because they aren't a family when they need help, even though "the family" is their focus.  It was heartwarming to me to know how far reaching our donations are.  I hope you all feel the same and PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Upcoming blog posts for donations from: RoseMarie, Cheryl B, SSeger, Barbara F, Susan A, and myself.  Please frequent the blog and do try and leave comments.  Remember with the changes in blogspot...you can no longer leave the url portion of name and url blank, you can though use your RAV, or Facebook or other profile links/url there.

Knitted and Crocheted Slippers

Pictured are slipper/socks.  We knit and crochet and donate many different styles of slippers.  Slippers provide extra warmth, and give folks a chance to wash their socks and still have something on their feet.  Many homeless and those living in shelters have few socks so the slippers can truly be a necessity for them.  If they've been outside in the cold and wet during the day and get a bed for the night in a temporary shelter, it gives them the ability to put something dry on their feet while their shoes and or socks dry out.

I didn't find a great deal of information regarding the history of slippers in my google search,  but what I did find was interesting.  It's believed the date back to the times of Sultans and their harems.  Slippers were a symbol of captivity.  One really couldn't run away without proper footwear, and since slippers were typically very light weight with little to protect the foot and or where slippery, they weren't something even a loveable concubine would attempt on cobblestones.  Slippers moved from The East to Medieval Europe and often were a sign of nobility.

Slippers were made initially to be fancy, made of delicate fabric and only became a true shoe replacement in later years.  Nowdays some folks wear slippers indoors instead of shoes, feeling it's cleaner; but there's also a great safety concern that people should not wear slippers instead of shoes as their feet aren't protected from injury and the number of folks who fall because wearing slippers vs shoes caused them to fall has been reported in medical communities.

Our Donated Slipper Counts:
2011......128
2012......153 (+25 more then the previous year
2013......220 (+67 more then the previous year
2014......121 (-32 less then the previous year.

AVERAGE for those 4 years is 155 pairs of slippers which  is  34 more then our most recent total.

Year End Donation Totals

Some  of you may have seen this very old afghan before.  This afghan was crocheted by my Great Grandmother.  It's in need of repair.
As you can see it's pulled away in a few places.  I've not yet determined the best method of repair.  I wanted to share this with you all, as I tally our year end totals.  Why?  Well, one of the things we do is provide afghans for people making the transistion from shelter living to permanent housing.  A welcome home, a celebration, a wish for a brighter future is what we offer in addition to a warm afghan.  An afghan, can last for generations and can be very meaningful.

Our year end tatallies while below this time last year, are still impressive.  Each and everyone of you who've supported the cause here on Bridge and Beyond should congratulate yourselves and feel pleased you were able to help so many people in need.  I thank you, and hope you'll all continue to care for those in need with your talented hands, hooks, and needles.

Hats: went from 1053 in 2013 to 971 in 2014.  (81 less)
Scarves: went from 666 in 2013 to 590 in 2014 (76 less)
Socks: dropped from 281 to 199 (82 less)
Afghans: dropped from 55 to 32 (23 less)
Slippers: dropped from 153 to 121 (32 less)
Rain ponchos: from 213 to 61 (152 less)
Mittens: from 300 to 130 (170 less)
Cotton Washcloths: fro 577 to 334 (243 less)

If you're able to increase your efforts in the coming months, that would obviously be welcomed.  If you're not, please understand what you do do, does matter.......even if it's one pair of mittens or pair of slippers.  Together, we do make a difference.  The Power of One should not be underestimated.

Team Crocheting Aids the Homeless

This afghan is the result of what I call team crochet.  A good friend of ours from New York, AnneMarie made these lovely squares, and another good friend of ours Sherry K, a fellow Buckeye edged and assembled the afghan.  What a beautiful result.  You might have seen this afghan earlier on Sherry's blog.  I love the jewel tones, it reminds me of a kaleidoscope.  Great work ladies!
Sherry's also been busy crocheting hats, slippers and a scarf .  Many thanks Sherry for tagging the hats and slippers with size, much appreciated.

Both Sherry and AnneMarie have been long time supporters of Bridge and Beyond, thrilled to have them with us.  Not too long ago, I posted a retro Avon's Calling post.  In addition to crocheting for those in need, Sherry's an Avon Representative.  I suggested you all might like to double your help by buying Avon from Sherry.  How does that help double?  Well, when you buy from Sherry, you give her the ability to get more yarn which turns into helping more people.  AND, you could even order personal care items from Sherry for the homeless here on Bridge and Beyond and help both with her Avon=yarn, and the personal care items needed for the shelters.

Or perhaps you need to do some Christmas Shopping.........Sherry's Avon Page is linked above.

Slipper Socks Warm Homeless Feet

Wonderfully warm slipper socks in lots of colors.  I think these knitted slipper socks are knitted with double yarn?  Or perhaps chunky yarn as they truly are nice and warm.  There was no note with a name or email address in this box so I don't know whom all are involved.  I know from the return address one name, Jane Burmeister; but I know this donation (and several to follow in other posts) comes from a group that gets together at work to knit and crochet, The Sullivan Group.  I've not been able to locate an email address, find a blog, and or facebook page so if anyone out there is reading this and is a part of this group, please make contact using the contact form in the right sidebar.

Here's a variety of cotton washcloths in many different styles, colors, and sizes.  Believe these are all crocheted.

Jane and this group are our newest pairs of helping hands.  Welcome to the group, we appreciate the help.

Reminders:
*Please include a note with your donation folks with your email, saves me trying to figure out whom you are in order to let you know the mail arrived safe and sound.
**Remember to avoid open stitches where you can put your finger through (v stitches, mile a minute, and granny style type stitches aren't as warm as solid stitches.
***Remember to avoid light colors, pastels, whites, and lots of bold colors as the darker colors serve a wider range of the population we strive to serve
****Please remember to tag hats, slippers, and mittens with size.
Would Jane Burmeister please make contact, you can use the contact form in the right side bar.

Crocheting for the Homeless

Sorry this picture is so dark folks one of the last one I tried to take just before the warning on my camera said the battery was exhausted.  The booties/slippers in the upper left corner are a pretty dark purple which is hard to see in this picture.  Many thanks to our good friend Barbara F for this thoughtful donation of crocheted slippers, hats, and cotton wash cloths.
AND.......personal care, more pretty crocheted cotton washcloths and a scarf for our homeless and those in need here in Central Ohio.  LOVE the blue green cotton, reminds me of the beach which sounds really nice right now with frosty cold nights.
Barbara is very generous with her time and talent, more lovely hats!  And all so nicely tagged with sized.  Special thanks for that Barbara, please keep up the good work.  We're thrilled to have your support here on Bridge and Beyond.

Personal Care Items Always a BIG hit with those in Need

This thoughtful crocheted donation comes from our good friend and loyal supporter RoseMarie from Tennessee.  No doubt many of you knew that immediately when you saw her signature decorations on the slippers.  RoseMarie has donated slippers, cotton washcloths, personal care items and slipper socks (the tube shaped item).  As I type this she's busy designing a pattern I'll soon be adding to the mittens tab, please keep checking in.

Mittens are always an item we don't get enough off, and they're an item not the easiest for many of us to make, knit or crochet.  She's been working on converting writs warmers/fingerless gloves from double crochet to single crochet to add warmth.  My thought was that for those living in the shelters these would be a welcome item and perhaps help stretch the mittens.  Naturally they'll not be as warm as a full pair of gloves or mitts, but an item I thought more of us would be inclined/able to make.

Stay tuned, and as always RoseMarie, please keep up the good work.

Crochet Hats, Scarves and Slippers for Ohio's Homeless

Hats, scarves, and slippers in this picture.  Awesome colors.  This marvelous donation is from our friend Diana K.  She and her hook must be battery charged.  She used the chevron (ripple) pattern to create these interesting scarves.  I love how the texture and shape show up so well with all nice solid colors.
And........yet there's more.  More hats and scarves crocheted and donated by Dear Diana.  Please keep up the good work Diana, we so appreciate all your efforts and generosity.

Folks, if you missed the previous post, please scroll back.  A knitted hat pattern was linked, and it was added to the hat tab.  Please check it out.

Scrolling back to this date last year, Sept 21st, 2013 I note we had donated 97 pairs of mittens/gloves which is 33 more then we've to date this year.  If you're one who can knit or crochet mittens, please do.  Cold hands are miserable.  Stay tuned folks, our good friend, RoseMarie is currently working on a pattern variation for fingerless gloves (crocheted) that I'll be posting to the mittens page.  While not full mittens, they would still be welcomed by those living in the shelters.

**Reminder to please remove hair (both human and furry friends), odors (from smoke or pets, cooking etc) from your donations.  Since all items require washable fibers, laundering your items before mailing is very helpful.  Laundering not only removes the hair and odors, it softens the fibers and gives a more finished look to all items.**

Slipper Socks to Warm the Feet

What an awesome donation this is.  Slippers socks knitted beautifully, in many colors and many sizes.  Look how nicely they're tagged with size and paired up.  Thank you Paulette for this kind donation.  Nothing is worse for people then cold wet feet, this will truly be a welcoming gift for all who receive them.

Think how good it feels to put on a clean dry pair of socks or slippers!

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
