Knitting and Crocheting and More to Aid The Homeless

Thank you Sarah S for this thoughtful donation of knitted and crocheted goodies for our homeless friends.  Sarah has been busy, as you can see with knitted wonderful soft and warm hats, and crocheting cotton washcloths.

Sarah has also included rain poncho's in her donation.  The orange pouches are rain poncho's.  This is a great idea!  Additionally she's added two large packages of socks.  We're thrilled to have reached beyond our goal for socks with more coming in.  Warm dry feet is the end result that many will benefit from.  Even though we've reached our goal, I'm happy to see more coming in.  Our sock donations over the last couple of years have diminished, thus the lower goal...so with reaching and surpassing that goal, we'll be able to raise our goal for next year.

Many thanks for your generous donation Sarah, please keep up the good work.  And extra thanks for tagging your hats with size, really helps the volunteers at the shelters.  And I like to ask how you made you hats, there's double and so nice and warm.  Are they made like a tube somehow?

Warm Dry Feet Help the Homeless

Thank you Sarah S for this generous donation to aid the Homeless.  She's included scarves, cotton washcloths, socks and rain poncho's.  Please click to enlarge to see details.  As you'll notice the rain poncho's are nicely packaged either in zip lock bags or a little pouch. Great idea!!

WOW..check out the socks folks, 48 pairs!  48 pairs of feet are going to be very very happy, dry and warmer.  Such a necessary item all year long.  She's been busy with her hook also, some nice scarves in great solid colors suitable for men or women.  AND she's also crocheted and donated the ever popular cotton washcloths.  Again in colors suitable for men or women.

**Back up folks and take a look at our graphs/goals for socks!  This is amazing and awesome.  we're at 96% of our goal already.  I don't think we've ever done that.  Let's keep the momentum going.  There have been years when we've had higher sock goals, but join me in clapping please.  Pretty exciting.

Many thanks Sarah S.  Your on going support of Bridge and Beyond and Ohio's homeless is so appreciated by many.  Keep up the good work!!

Personal Care so Very Much Needed by the Homeless

WOW!  look at all the goodies.  This is quite a haul of personal care items.  Toothpaste, toothbrushes, chap stick, shampoo, lotion, dental floss, wipes.  This will be very helpful to lots of folks.  Thank you Sarah S for this very thoughtful donation.

As you know things in our country are very serious, very scary right now.  We've been told to stock up, to stay in, to shelter in place, to not go to work or school etc.  It varies a bit state to state; but one group that must be very much in danger are our Homeless.  Many have on going health issues, many don't have the ability to wash their hands, or have sanitizes etc.  So, these personal care items I know will be very well received.

I hope everyone is taking care of themselves and others.  Many thanks Sarah and please keep up the good work.

Crocheted Items from Head to Toe Help Homeless

Thanks you Sarah S for this thoughtful donation of crocheted goodies.  Look at the variety folks.  She's been busy crocheting scarves, slippers, hats, and cotton washcloths!  AND she's also included personal care items with her donation.

Special thanks for taking the time to tag your hats with size, it is so helpful and such a huge time saver...both for me here at the house and for the various volunteers in the homeless shelters.  When they are tagged, it assists getting the item on the right shelf and into the hands of those in need quicker.

Thank you Sarah, was so nice to hear from you again.  Look forward to seeing you here again on Bridge and Beyond.  Thank you for your long time support of Bridge and Beyond and the Homeless we serve.

A Generous Donation for Ohio's Homeless

WOW!  Look at this awesome donation from our good friend and long time supporter, Sarah S.  LOVE the nice dark colors for that hats and scarves, and that you nicely tagged the hats with size.  Sarah has been busy, as you can see.  A nice pile of crocheted cotton washcloths also.  She's also included personal care items and some plastic containers that will help Rae when she prepares meals for those in need on Saturday mornings.

Many many thanks Sarah for your on going support of Bridge and Beyond.

Apologies for the delay in getting this posted.  I had posted the picture and numbers below right before heading out of town in order to write the post while away, and got locked out of my blog here on my ipad.  Took some doing going through multiple steps today in order to create a new password so I could get in.  Never had that happen with my blog before...a few other things when using the ipad,  somehow it seems more sensitive than my Windows Computer.  Or maybe it's going between different operating systems that causes the problems?

Keep up the good work, and many thanks Sarah S!!

Donating Socks Warm Feet for the Homeless

Thank you Sarah S for this thoughtful donation of personal care items, crocheted cotton washcloths, and socks!  I rushed these socks over to Rae the very next day after opening the box because the temps have been bitter cold and wet and socks are sooooo appreciated by the folks that live out in the elements.  Rae was thrilled to get them and was putting together packs to take with her when she made her rounds with the meals.  Perfect timing.  Wet cold feet are miserable so having dry, clean socks to change into is HUGE!

The personal care items and cotton washcloths are always a hit as well.  Please keep up the good work, and many thanks for all you do.

We have a few more donations to count in with our numbers for 2016, so please check back in.

**For anyone new to the blog, the counting below maybe confusing.  When 2016 began, we started with the number of items donated the previous year and are counting down in hopes of hitting and surpasses the number of items donated last year.**

Blue Sky

Well this afghan, Blue Sky is quite timely, given all the storms around the country and high winds during this spring one day and winter the next season.  Blue Sky reminds us, after storms the sky does clear, and things do get better.  Somehow it seems perfect to me, and as I said very timely.  We had quite a storm here last night, high winds and lots of rain; but as I look out the window now.........Blue Skies do prevail.  And doesn't that metaphor seem appropriate for our homeless families?

Thank you Sarah S for assembling this afghan.  This ghan is made of many different styles and sizes of squares and rectangle...some knitted and some crocheted.  She's edged in brown and joined to make a wonderful welcome home present for our families at Homeless Families Foundation as they transition from shelter living to their permanent housing situation.  Many thanks Sarah!  I truly appreciate your help with the backlog of squares.
Additionally, Sarah has included lots of personal care items, always appreciated and needed along with cotton washcloths.  Thank you again for your on going support of Bridge and Beyond and helping Ohio's Homeless.

Keep up the good work.

Please note the category of shawl, shrugs, ponchos etc has reached our little goal, same as last year of 1.........but please please please.........don't let that stop you from making more of these items.  Likewise note we've definitely reached our goal for rain poncho's.  Rain ponchos's serve many purposes so we will probably still need some....down the line, but not for awhile.

Bright Desert Afghan

Bright Desert when it was designed.  The picture is a bit light.  Several types of squares here from several different pairs of helping hands.   Most are squares worked in the round, but the bright blues are squares worked side to side.  I love the variety you get with different kinds of squares, different textures, and size sometimes too.

Thank you Sarah S!  Bright Desert turned out GREAT!  So, this is the after, after Sarah worked her magic with edging and joining.  And as you can see pictures taken in different light always makes the colors vary.
Wanted to take a couple so you could see it from a different angle.  Colors in the desert are ever changing, based on the light and the time of day, this afghan really brings that thought home to me.  Some think there's no color in the desert, but I've seen lots of variances from our camping and hiking days in the desert.......when we were younger.

Beautiful job Sarah, we truly appreciate you're helping hands!  Keep up the good work.  The folks that receive this ghan are going to be thrilled.

*be sure and pop back in for the other portion of Sarah's donation

Bright Desert and Blue Sky in The Works

Say hello to Blue Sky.  You might remember it from when it was designed if you've been following the blog for awhile.  It's been in que waiting it's turn to become a precious afghan for a family. And to make that a reality it recently  joined
Bright Desert in a trip from Ohio to Vermont to visit our good friend Sarah S.  Both Blue Sky and Bright Desert arrived at Sarah's excited to visit and get assembled.  They're feeling a bit disjointed and fragmented and are looking forward to becoming whole.

What...you don't think the yarn/squares talk?  Psss, I'm hear to tell you otherwise, really...I'm not crazy.  The squares do speak to me as I make designs and think of names.  Often Bridge and Beyond Members help with the names.  So many shades of blue in the first afghan...and the sky's the limit are what came to mind in it's naming.  The Desert to some is void of color, but depending on the time of the day, the type of light, the time of the year it can be brilliant.  Blue Sky above, tan earth, mauves, pinks, purples and oranges in both colors of flowers and in the rocky formations.

Will be anxious to see their transformation from our friend Sarah's capable and skilled hands.  What colors will she use to bring them together?  Many many thanks Sarah for your help!!

Can you imagine the stories behind all these squares?  You can see the variety in style, color, shape and size...more so with Blue Sky, then Bright Desert; but there too.  Made from many hands, traveled here to Ohio, then to Vermont and ultimately back to Ohio to meet up with a family through Homeless Families Foundation where the stories will continue.

Springtime Offers Hope

This is Springtime when it was designed and was waiting  to be assembled.  Blue reminds me of the sky and water, yellow the sun, and shades of green new grass ......which is why I named this one Springtime.

Here it is after our good friend Sarah S assembled it.
Thank you, Thank you Sarah.  She's oriented the picture the same as the before picture when she photographed this.  Awesome job.  I love the dark green you used to bring all the squares up to the same size and join together  Perfect!

This is one I snapped, but turned differently trying to get the light.  I LOVE how this ghan turned out.  Many many different types of squares, some knitted, some crocheted, some are granny style squares, some are are crocheted back and forth vs round, and some were more rectangles than squares; but no matter Sarah did a beautiful job bringing this ghan to life.  And soon it will be wrapped around someone for warmth and hope.  You can truly tell how many different pairs of helping hands were involved in the making of this afghan.

Well done Sarah!

Sunday Wrap of the A-Z Challenge and the Purple Iris Afghan

Purple Iris after being designed.

Purple Iris after it's been completed!  The colors haven't changed, but you know how different things look with different lighting.  First picture was taken with a bit more natural light in the room, and the completed picture with lots of lights on, as it's a dark dreary rainy cold day here in Central Ohio.  This afghan in waiting traveled to Vermont recently and was assembled beautifully by our friend. Sarah S.  Many many thanks Sarah for taking on this project to lend me a hand, much appreciated.   You matched the lavendar perfectly with your edging and joining.  I think the real color of the ghan is somewhere between the 2 pictures, lol.

Happy Sunday one and all, there is no official A-Z post required on Sunday.  It's suppose to be a day off, however I've tried to keep the momentum going and have posted all the Sunday's in April, hoping for extra coverage for Bridge and Beyond.

For those who may be here the first time, Welcome.  One of the items we make (Knit/crochet) and donate here on Bridge and Beyond is afghans.  There are given as a special Welcome Home Gift to families when they transition from shelter living to their permanent housing situation.  Truly something to celebrate.  We celebrate with them, congratulate them and wish them well for the future with our gifts of homemade afghans.

Again many thanks Sarah!

Socks...socks are needed all year round.  Cold, wet feet are not only miserable to have; but dangerous from a health standpoint.  Nice, dry warm socks to change into may not seem like to you if you have a roof over your head; but it's HUGE when living outdoors, or shelter to shelter.  Thank you Sarah S from Vermont these socks, slippers, cotton washcloths,  and personal care items being donated are so very much appreciated.  Please keep up the good work.  Special thanks too for tagging your slippers with size!

Personal Care Packages Donated

Wave hello to our friend, Sarah S. Happy to have you with us again. Sarah has put together some nice personal care packages with combs, soap, socks, toothbrush -paste-floss. Having personal care not only makes one feel better but aids in helping to maintain good health for those who don't have access to doctors. Thank you Sarah S for your on going support. Hope to see you here often on Bridge and Beyond.

She's also donated 6 crocheted granny style squares. Much appreciated, but a gentle reminder folks to please hold mailing your squares (times, sizes etc. have been revised; check the squares tab for updates). Just need to catch my breathe a bit folks and do some catching up with assembling before I'll be ready to take on more.

**Have you read about the change in square donation policy? If not, please do.
***Have you read about and gotten involved in the latest contest? Not much participation, though the contest was announced on July 1st. I'll be altering it (or maybe doing another one ?) to try to improve participation...please keep checking in. AND, if you're not gotten involved so far....DO IT NOW.

Scrumptious Stuff from Sarah

personal care for homelessLook at this scrumptious stuff from our friend, Sarah S. (had to do a S title for fun)! Some wonderful personal care items here; soap, floss, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, AND deodorant! All good, and needed stuff. Sarah also sent socks, more ponchos, and 20 wonderful cotton washcloths...all different colors and sizes. Fabulous!

Sarah, your stuff is scrumptious! Thanks so much for your on going support and wonderful donation.

I've received many emails and know we have more cotton cloths in route or soon to be mailed. Thanks so much for everyone's support of June's focus, very much appreciated.

WOW, it's July already. Where does time go? Sure seems to speed by these days. July, as you may know has been deemed the month for squares. Like wash cloths they're smaller, perhaps easier to make in the warm months when you don't want something heavy on your lap. Squares need to be 7-10 inches, and can be knitted or crocheted. Please refrain from using lots of white. Additionally information can be obtained by clicking on the working calendar tab (top of the blog), and or the Give a Square badge

Sensational Slippers and Socks

slippers and socksSecond day in a row I'm focused on S's. Sensational Slippers and Socks from Sarah S in New Jersey. Sarah's S donations are taking care of last months's project, Toasty Tootsie's, and this months project, SOCK it to ME!. Sensational, scrumptious, and sweet! Sorry folks my brain is on roll with S words. Did you see yesterday's S word post?

These crocheted slippers are super heavy and will therefore be nice and warm. Nicely designed, and very well made. Many thanks Sarah S from The Hive for your ongoing support.

I've updated our map and lists again folks, please take a look. Remember all blog posts are written and are in que, with a new post each and everyday. As of the writing of this post we have 27 states listed as locations were our fabulous knitters and crocheters donate from which is 54%. Let's keep growing the list. Please check to see if your name is listed on the list of folks with blogs and the list of non bloggers. If I know where you're from it should be listed with your name. If's it's listed there, you are represented on the map. If it's not listed there, please leave a comment so I can update both. Wouldn't it be fabulous to have all 50 states represented! This is fun, seeing where everyone is from and it will also aid me in identifying donations when they come without notes, and or with different names then I may know you as.

crocheting and knitting for homeless
Thank you Sarah S (from The Hive) for your ongoing support and beautiful work to help our cold homeless here in Ohio. Look at these 3 darling sets of matching mittens and hats! The hats are knitted, the mittens are crochet. In additions she sent 4 very nice crocheted squares which you know I'll add as I continue to design and join afghans for those in need.

The 2 pair of heavy warm socks is such a bonus and the men will really appreciate them.

Thanks again Sarah for your thoughtful donations.

The Give a Square program was a 3 month program and
during those 3 months 390 squares were collected and added to some I had on hand. To date we've donated 17 afghans to the homeless (2 went to our friends at Pine Street). Waiting in the wings to be assembled are 8 ghans already designed. In addition, I have enough squares and rectangles on hand to design more! Very definitely a good project that produced a good outcome. I'll continue to design and post pictures and continue to work on assembling and keep you all posted. Pictures of all ghans available by clicking on above red Give a Square Text.

I am so greatful for donations for the homeless

hats, scarves for homeless
Thank you Sarah. You've once again shown how generous you are. We appreciate all your efforts more then you realize. Sarah's been a wonderful supporter donating to our homeless since she and I met over on The Hive. Sarah sent 3 matching hat and scarf sets, 3 additional hats, 2 personal care packages (which are always wonderful), 6 squares that you know will be used to create more ghans for our folks in need at Faith Mission, and 5 pairs of warm socks.

Everything is far prettier than it shows in this picture. It's a bit blurry. I think I had to recharge my batteries right after this too. Sorry folks.

Many thanks Sarah for your on going support.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
