Knitting and Crocheting and More to Aid The Homeless

Thank you Sarah S for this thoughtful donation of knitted and crocheted goodies for our homeless friends.  Sarah has been busy, as you can see with knitted wonderful soft and warm hats, and crocheting cotton washcloths.  

Sarah has also included rain poncho's in her donation.  The orange pouches are rain poncho's.  This is a great idea!  Additionally she's added two large packages of socks.  We're thrilled to have reached beyond our goal for socks with more coming in.  Warm dry feet is the end result that many will benefit from.  Even though we've reached our goal, I'm happy to see more coming in.  Our sock donations over the last couple of years have diminished, thus the lower goal...so with reaching and surpassing that goal, we'll be able to raise our goal for next year.

Many thanks for your generous donation Sarah, please keep up the good work.  And extra thanks for tagging your hats with size, really helps the volunteers at the shelters.  And I like to ask how you made you hats, there's double and so nice and warm.  Are they made like a tube somehow?

Knitted Cotton Washcloths and More

Thank you Laura J for hand delivering this wonderful donation for Bridge and Beyond.  Laura has been very busy knitting cotton washcloths, as you can see.  Lots of different colors, and several different styles/patterns.  These cloths have so many different purposes and are always well received by those living in the elements, and those at the shelters.

Laura has included a nice variety of personal care items, and a rain poncho!  Tis the season for that for sure.  April showers bring May flowers.

Thank you Sue S for this thoughtful donation.  We have some personal care items, some cotton knitted washcloths, knitted and crocheted scarves and scarves and headbands.........AND a rain poncho!  Whew...you've been busy.  Folks click to enlarge to see details (you know you can always do that here on the blog), did you see something new and unique in this donation?  Sunglasses!  What a great idea, something truly I have never thought of.  Odd to, since I wear sunglasses all year long.  But, truly I never thought about that as a good item to donate.  Well done! 

Folks, it's Spring; but we're still having some very cool nights.  As we speak, (well type) I'm sitting here with a heavy sweater on and a lapghan on my lap...so, our homeless friends are still very much in need of us keeping our hooks and needles busy.

The Power of Friendship

Look what a group of friends can accomplish.  This donation is a collective effort from 5 friends: Nikki S, Linda S, Jason D, Christina D, and Laurin A.  How cool is that.  We have a wonderful collection of personal care items, toothpaste, toothbrushes, rain poncho's, combs, and soap AND some beautiful scarves both knitted and crocheted.  Nikki orchestrated this wonderful donation for the benefit of Bridge and Beyond and hand delivered it to my house.  Let's give this group of friends special kudos for using their friendship to do for others.  I LOVE this.  It once again shows the power of one, the power of spreading the word and what together people can accomplish.

Donations for Homeless

Thank you Theresa A for this thoughtful donation of goodies to aid the homeless and others in need here in Central Ohio.  Quite a nice assortment of personal care items, cotton washcloths, socks, rain poncho's and hot pads.  Folks click to see the difference.  Notice the 5 pads on the left (blue-green, red-white and blue, mixed blue and brown, solid green and mixed red-white-brown), they are double thickness and will make a nice addition to the welcome packs Homeless Families puts together for families moving from shelter living into a permanent housing situation.

AND, also note in the lower right corner, the little blue and white packages.  Folks this is a really good idea....I never thought of it, but Theresa has included 2 emergency blankets!  I'm going to talk to Rae, our friend who feeds the homeless on Sat mornings to ask if this is something I should add to our list of things to collect.  I think it sounds like a real winner.  Good thinking on your part Theresa.  Stay tuned folks.

The Rainy Cold Season, Special Donations

The months of March and April in Central Ohio.......can be almost anything with regard to weather.  What it isn't is predictable.  We can have freezing rain, sleet, snow, rain, or sunshine.  The weather can change 40 degrees from one day to the next.  So, even on a day when it might be pretty and sunny and 55-60 ish during the day, it can be extremely windy.  A rain poncho provides a great wind break in those situations.  Likewise it might be 40 and rainy all day and all night and these rain poncho's are again needed and appreciated.

Our good friend and long time supporter Anne Marie from New York donated 200 of these awesome poncho's.  This is only a fraction of them in the picture.  Didn't un-box them all as I delivered 3/4th of them the very next day to our friend Rae who prepares meals and feeds those in the elements on Saturday mornings.

I would imagine the poncho's might come in hand covering ones belongings also when out in the elements.  Additionally, the shelters always appreciate these donations.  You may not be aware, homeless who get nights here and there in shelters often still spend the bulk of their day outside until the magic hour they're permitted to come inside.  This isn't necessarily slam folks on shelters either, many operate with a volunteer base and therefore often don't have the ability to operate any differently with regard to the hours they permit folks inside.

**This is the accounting I listed on rain poncho's when we closed out the numbers for 2015

Rain Poncho's is another item probably used all year long, like socks.  Obviously it too is store bought and not handmade.  In 2013 we donated 213, in 2014 there were 61 (152 less) and in 2015 we had 105 which is 44 MORE than the previous year and 108 less than 2013.  Rain poncho's can be purchased almost anywhere.  We donate the light weight ones that are folded in a small package which makes then very portable for the folks in need.  So, we've now not only met our goal of matching last years number, we've passed it.  YIPPEE, and even better.........we've broken our all time record for the number of this item donated.  Way to go!  That gives us now the ability to concentrate on some of the other items.

Personal Care for Homeless Always Needed

Thank you Dianne L for this thoughtful donation of personal care items and rain poncho's.  These are items always needed, all 12 months of the year.  Dianne was able to save lots of hotel goodies from some recent travels....perfect way to help the homeless without needing to spend money or time knitting and or crocheting.  She's also included some Avon Lip Balm/Chap Stick.........another item used all year long, be it cold for cracked cold lips or hot and cracked lips in summer's heat.

Helping Homeless with Rain Poncho's and Recycling

Today's letter for the A-Z challenge is R=Recycle, Rain Poncho'

Recycle does play a part when thinking about Homelessness.  While we here on Bridge and Beyond don't collect and donate used clothing such as coats, sweaters etc, it is something everyone can do locally to help.  Check with your local Homeless Shelters, Churches, and Firehouses to see what items of clothing they accept.  Coats are probably the largest item needed.  Used items aren't part of our Mission here on Bridge and Beyond.  Handmade items is a large part of our mission, with the exceptions being personal care items, store bought socks, AND

Rain Poncho's.  Rain Poncho's are an easy item to donate for our non knitters and crocheters, they are light weight making postage not a big issue, and they are very much needed for the folks living out in the elements.  They are also a good item for those at the shelters who may be waiting on buses and or walking to work.

Folks when I made deliveries yesterday to Homeless Families Foundation I saw first hand how some of our hand crafted donations are being used.  Not only does Homeless Families Foundation work with families one on one to help them with housing, job search and training....but those in the area in need, who may not be "their" clients are able to enter the entryway (sorta of room between 2 doors) where some of our goods are laid out so those outside and cold can come in to obtain what they need.  I recognized some of our work and it brought a smile to my face.  They don't want to shut the locals out because they aren't a family when they need help, even though "the family" is their focus.  It was heartwarming to me to know how far reaching our donations are.  I hope you all feel the same and PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Slipper, Socks, Poncho's aid the Homeless

Thank you AnneMarie for your on going support of Bridge and Beyond.  AnneMarie has been with us for a good while and is always very generous and very supportive.  She's crocheted 10 pairs of slippers in various sizes, and labeled them with size.  She also included personal care items in her donation for the homeless, as well as poncho's.  The plastic poncho's are always so well received.  Trying to stay dry, even when the weather's warmer isn't all that easy to do when you're out in the elements. 

And wet feet, never good so the socks she also donated are awesome.  As always, many thanks and please keep up the good work AnneMarie!

**Reminder folks to avoid using novelty yarns and suede, avoid using white, beige and other pastels, avoid lots of stripes (solids are always better for all ages), avoid bright colors as homeless do not like to call attention to themselves (with the outside garmets like hats and scarves)...so the nice darker colors are always preferred AND they don't show the dirt as much.  Please label all hats, mittens, and slippers with size.**

Rain Poncho's and Socks aid the Homeless

These socks were previously donated, but I like to have pictures whenever possible with our posts.  Socks are needed primarily for men, both those living out in the elements and those in temporary housing.  Cold wet feet make a person miserable.  Socks, store bought is an item non knitters and crocheters can donate to be involved......to help the homeless.

If you've missed the last 2 posts, please scroll back.  One post compared numbers of donations for mittens, and the other slippers.

Using the same date March 26th for all these reflections.  In 2012 we had donated 102 pairs of socks, in 2013 120 pairs...nice bump and thus far this year only 49 pairs.  If you're able we'ld love to bump up those numbers.  If you have friends who'd like to help but don't knit or crochet, please make the suggestion.

Rain poncho's, another item non knitters and crocheters can donate.  Small and lightweight, but such a good item particularly for those living out in the elements.  Also come in hand for those waiting for buses which many of our folks living in temporary shelters do as their job searching or getting job training to get back on the feet.

In 2012 by March 26th 2 poncho's were donated, same number for the following year 2013, and thus far this year we've donated 5.

Thoughtful and Necessary Items Donated for Families in Need

 Here's a cleaver way to package personal care items.  Thank you Cheryl S for this thoughtful and bountiful donation.  Personal care items are always needed by all 3 family shelters, as well as our folks on street.  I always safe all the sample sized stuff that comes in the mail, as well as the goodies from hotels when traveling.  A great way to make donations without spending money.  Cheryl has crocheted a cute little blue bag to hold it all.  This is also a nice gift idea folks if you need a little something for co-worker or friend.  Put a nice homemade bar of soap, bath scratcher or better yet one of your homemade knitted or crocheted cotton washcloths with it. 

 A beautiful, colorful and very cheery stripped afghan, made in what I would granny type stitches.  Won't this make some family happy!

 Stick with me folks, the box Cheryl sent was HUGE!  I took out a layer and photographed and just kept at it.  I love this pretty ripple afghan that started out with granny squares.  Very very nice.  I can see a Mom with girls loving this.

 Homeless Families Foundations is going to be jumping for a joy when I make the next delivery which will includes these ghans from Cheryl.  Another variation on granny's as the center and building from that.  This pretty purple and pink afghan is made like a never ending square...once the 3 where joined to form the middle.

 Cheryl included some personal care items, a hat, a space blanket and poncho.  And, the cute matching green set of hot pads, dish towel, spatula, dishcloth, measuring cups etc all packaged nicely for Welcome Home.  This will make an awesome addition to those special packs Homeless Families Foundation puts together when folks transition from shelter living to their permanent housing situation.

 Missed getting this in the above picture, more kitchen goodies folks!

 Creative, creative, and always looking ahead....that's our friend Cheryl.  She visits garage sales and came up with this cute doll.  She's made the doll clothes, a blanket, a towel set.  Please click to see all the cute items and their detail here.  This will be put aside for the special Christmas project through Homeless Families Foundation. 

 Another adorable crocheted afghan from Cheryl.  This one is tied to look a quilt.  Nice squares, joined in a pretty blue with the added touch of white ties.  AND...a blue and white ticking (think that's the right word) stripped pillow case.  This will make a nice bed package.  The colors will work for either a young boy or girl in my opinion.  Even a teen girl would enjoy this.

 Slippers in lots of sizing and colors.  Not sure what's going on in the picture...the colors are really funky and not true folks.  No idea why.  In addition to the slippers Cheryl has made a cute outfit for a young girl with a skirt and vest/top.

Another awesome colorful afghan.  Look how she picked up on the colors in the 2 pillow cases with her stripping on the granny stitch afghan.  Nicely done Cheryl.  What a nice idea putting pillow cases to make a bed ensemble!

I do hope you found time to eat and sleep while compiling this box of goodies.  Whew....it took me quite a bit of time opening, counting, photographing....can't imagine how much thoughtful time you spent crocheting.  Bless You!
