Sea and Sand Knitted Afghan

Not the best picture, but it's done folks.  Long last!  Whew, I've been knitting this it seems forever.  It needs to be laundered and blocked yet, but finally Sea and Sand Afghan is done.  It's very large and will be a bit larger once blocked no doubt.

It might be part of fund raiser for Homeless Families Foundation, and it might be donated as we do the others for The Welcome Home Project.

WOOT WOOT, messed around more and found the page somehow hidden...but please still feel free to let us know if you have a good pattern to add!!  Here's the Mitten Tab.

Folks, if you missed the  post where I included a graph of how we're doing with each of the items we knit and crochet and donate and compared it to this time last year.  Please click HERE

When, and Where did You Learn to Knit or Crochet?

*Oophs, just realized this scheduled post didn't post.  So, popped in to do a little edit.

Last year we shared some of what makes each of do what we do, knit or crochet and donate.  People had very sweet and inspiring stories.  I thought for the next couple of weeks it would be fun to share how and why/where we began to knit and or crochet.

Mo Mother taught me to knit, I think I was about 7 years old and I knitted one little scarf.  The type that's about 4 inches wide goes across the top of your head, covers your ears and ties beneath your chin.  It was everyother row knit, purl...very basis.  I think she then crochet to taper the ends and crocheted the tie.  It was variegated, looked like the variegated you now see that's called Mexicana.  I think it took me forever to finish it and I never knitted again again about 12 years ago when the knitting with big needles and using novelty yarn to make scarves as The Thing.

I learned to crochet from my neighbors Grandmother when I was about the same age.  She taught me to chain, do single and double crochet and I made a mint green Dollie from rug yarn that she gave me.   I never crocheted again until after getting married, back in 1972.  Hubby was working full time in the evenings, and going to school during the days when I worked, so I had lots of time on my hands and decided I needed a hobby.  I got a book, learn to crochet in a day or something like that.  Following the directions some, mostly the pictures and kept at it until I remembered and have never stopped crocheting since then.  Except for a period of a couple of years when I was wearing writs braces for my carpal tunnel

How bout you?  What's your story?  Email at sandycrochet at gmail and I'll be happy to share it.  Do you remember what your first projects were?

The ghan above is one I've been working on off and on for a good long while.  It's knitted, feather and fan pattern.  I've named this one Sea and Sand.  I'm on the 2nd to last section, then need to weave in end...decide if I want an edge, launder and block.

Knitting for Homeless is Ongoing

I've been working on this afghan for sometime.  Off and on, because it's a bit tedious.  Knitted ghans take more time then crocheted ones and I like to change back and forth a bit on knitted and crocheted projects.  This afghan is called Sea and Sand and is over half done currently.  I plan to work on this for several more days and then, once again switch to crocheting.  I'll be selecting another one of the designed waiting in the wings ghans to work on, so stay tuned.

Yesterday I took time to visit everyone (40+) on the bloggers list of those who've donated.  I wanted to invite all to check out the new things going on here on Bridge and Beyond, and encourage visits and comments.  I do that periodically...you know that no doubt, if you're a blogger.  However, it seems many of those folks haven't blogged for a good long while.  I've thought this off and on, as I make my blog visits.  Some are so outdated, blogs from 2010 and 2011 that I'm not sure they'll actually even see my visit and or comments.  Depends on how they have their settings.  Generally, people receive email notifications when someone leaves a comment on their blog.  I do hope they see them.  However, I belief these inactive blogs/links hinder the blogs placement/google ranking etc.  I will be reviewing the list and moving the oldest/most inactive/(probably people who don't blog at all anymore) from the list.  I'll add their names and state to the list of those who don't blog.  If you used to blog and don't any longer, but have a Facebook and or Ravelry Profile page, please let me know and I'll add you to that list instead.

Have you read that we accept quilted scarves and quilts now on Bridge and Beyond?  Are you a quilter?  Do you know someone who is?  Please let them know, would love to have some quilts to put with our afghans for Project Welcome Home for our folks at Homeless Families Foundation.  Do you have blog friends who quilt?  If so, please send them our link.

Have you heard we have a Facebook Group Page?
Check it out, though ALL updates will appear here on the blog and it will still be the primary source of communication.  Links will be posted there directing you here in order to read the full content of posts and see pictures etc.  But, as one of the many goals for this group/blog for the year 2013; we're striving to reach more caring people in order to serve a larger number of people in need.  Please help us by visiting and chatting in the Facebook group as well as here on the blog.

**The focus for the remainder of January is slippers.  AND, we'll continue focusing on feet.  Cold, and wet feet are miserable.  So...for the month of February we'll continue with slippers as our focus AND add socks for the feet.  Socks are store bought and should be for men who live outdoors 99% of the time.  Remember to check out the slipper tab at the top of the blog for information about sizing, colors, styles, fiber type etc.  You might enjoy using one of the patterns available there as well.   February  continues to be about feet.**

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
