Green Valley in the Works

This afghan originally was called pastel garden when it was designed because of the light spring colors.  Our friend Tristi began edging the squares with the dark green and it's taken on a different look.  We've renamed it Green Valley.  Makes me remember a silly thing from childhood, Down in the valley where the green grass grows, there sat Sandy sweet as a rose, etc.  Remember jumping rope to that song and inserting your name?   Come on, I'm betting some of you are as old as me and remember.  You're nodding now, I can tell.

Any way, I picked up where Tristi left off with the edging, then our friend SSeger (Sue), mentioned in a comment she'd like square that had flower to be in the middle.  There were 30 squares 6 x 5, so there was no middle.  I liked her idea...these afghans after all have squares made my many pairs of helping hands so it is truly a team effort.  I started moving squares around and pulling out some that I thought added less to the theme.  And here ya go.  More squares have been edged since it came back from Tristi's house and in fact, since taking this picture am up to 16 squares done...so moving right along
A little different view here for you.  Hoping to get this afghan finished soon, and will keep you posted.  Need to look through my stash to see what else I might want to add beyond the dark green for the edging once the squares are all connected.  I think right now (might change my mind), some of pretty tangerine or yellow might be the ticket to bring it all together.

Stay tuned and keep your yarn handy folks!

An Afghan in the Works Needs a Name

The above afghan is in the works.  It was named Pastel Garden (see below in it's original designed stage).  I think it needs a new name, as it no longer looks pastel to me.  Tristi K started working on this for us,  and had the vision of bordering and joining in the dark green.  I like it, it pops...but needs a new name.  I've got it laid out and have picked up where she left off.  My thoughts for names as I stare as it are: Green Garden, Green Valley, and or Green Pastures.  What do you all think?  I don't want to re-use a name we've used before, so checked the files of those completed, as well as those waiting in the wings.  I'm sorta leaning Green Valley...as I see flowers in fields of green?

Crochet Hats for Ohio Homeless

Thank you Trist K for this wonderful crochet hat donation.  Extra thanks for taking the time to label with size.  We do ask everyone to do, as it assures hats get to the right location quicker.  It takes lots of extra time for me to measure and or try on lots of hats to determine size.  AND then all the volunteers are also saved time when hats are sized so they get properly categorized.

Love the nice dark colors, always the best way to go!

Please keep up the good work.

Pastel Garden Afghan in the Works Needs a New Name

Here's Pastel Garden in stage One, it's original design.  At some point the upper right square with the Teddy Bear was removed to a more appropriate afghan design and a celery color green square was added to replace it.

Here's Pastel Garden after our friend Tristi started edging some of the squares.  With the dark green, it no longer looks like pastel garden, so believe we're  in need of renaming it.  Tristi has passed this ghan in the works back  to me  for completion.  Anyone have any ideas for a new name?  We'll have time to maul it over, as I have 3 other ghans currently in the works, so unsure when I'll get back to this one.

Green Garden is all I've come up with so far.  Secret Garden?  The book....just popped into my head.

Speak up folks.

Though it is spring (and now the font changes back?), it is still cold here many days and nights.  Sitting inside right now with cold feet and a fleece on if that gives you any ideas.  Donations are still needed.  So thanks to all whom are keeping their yarn and hands busy.

Donations Help many Homeless

Thank yiou Tristi for the awesome donation and for taking the time to drop it off on my door step.  Love the variety of the doantion of hats, slippers, socks, cotton cloths and socks. Also love how you've tagged all the hats with size.

Thank you for your on going support and please keep up the good work.  Each hat you make keeps a head warm, and keeping a head warm, feet warm and dry is essential.  Folks, as I type this post it's only 48 degrees inside my house.  It's cold.  Our furnace picked a bad wkend to decide not to work.  The repair is expected momentarily........but, if I'm this cold in doors, think of those folks less fortunate then me.  Think of those living in the elements, in the shelters.  Truly is mind boggling.  I know I'll be warm again in short order, they don't have that luxury.

Keep your yarn close at hand folks and know that each item you make truly makes a difference.

End of year totals not to far off, so please keep checking in.

The Reasons Why We Knit and Crochet

Another graphic I saw on Facebook recently I thought I'd share.  Certainly to keep calm and not kill people/ keep sane and not go crazy etc is something we all hear and see over and over again.  Though I had to laugh about the itchy wool !

Added a new slipper pattern yesterday to the slipper tab from our good friend Tristi.  Please check it out.  How can you turn down something with the title of EASY Double Strand Slippers.  She says they go fast too.  What a plus fast and easy!  Thank you Trisit.

A Crocheters Story

Saw this cute comic the other day on Facebook and thought I'd share it with you all.  While this may be about knitting the same holds true us crocheters too.  I'd be a rich person if I was paid for every-time I said, just one more...how bout you all?

A while back I asked you all to email me your stories about how you learned, where you learned etc. to knit or crochet.  Here's another enjoyable story to read.  This is our friend Tristi's story.  Thank you Tristi for sharing.  Still happy to receive other stories to post.

I learned to crochet when I was a child.  My mom taught me basics, how to chain and maybe single crochet, not that I knew the terms,  I never did much with it then.  When I was in college my roommate learned to crochet so I picked up the hook again, re-learned and started an afghan that never got finished.
Fast forward a few years and I picked up my hook again, this time to make a baby blanket for my baby, I was maybe 3 months along.  I still have that blanket and I have to be honest I have no idea what stitch I used, it definitely wasn't a "basic" stitch" but it worked so...  once again I laid down my hook.
Another few years passed and we were in our house and my aging neighbor knew that I, as well as my family, liked to craft (at the time it was plastic canvas).  She offered me 2 or 3 huge black garbage bags of yarn and a few boxes of magazines and books, as she couldn't crochet anymore.  I looked thru the bags picking the yarn I wanted to keep and what I would pass on to my mom and sisters.  I found a swatch of a beautiful stitch and I was determined to figure out what it was so I could make a blanket.
Looking thru the magazines I found a little booklet that taught the basics and a few "fancy" stitches.  I dubbed this my crochet bible.  For the first time I learned what I was doing, what single crochet and double crochets were.  I also learned how to read a pattern.
That swatch that inspired me was a closed shell stitch and I made a baby blanket with it.  It wasn't the prettiest of pieces as I didn't know how important counting stitches was, it grew in some places and shrunk in others, but it was a jump off point.

I turned into a crochet friend.  I made afghans, toys, bags, dish cloths, anything to practice different stitches and reading patterns.  I finally was brave enough to try making clothes.  I made myself a few tops, some of it was as a pattern tester.  I took a class and made my eldest a hoodie.

I almost always have a project on my hook these days, usually 2 or 3.  It is my sanity.  I have made lots of things over the years, alot of them given as gifts and alot to various charities.   After the birth of my 2nd, I didn't get to crochet as much, a little bit here and there and then she got mobile and loved to play with my yarn.  She's 2 and a half now and she has phases where she's fascinated by my crochet and times when she takes my hook.  It's been challenging but I still find time to do a bit.

Saluting Tristi and Her Afghans

Do you feel like you should salute?  Tristi assembled this Red,White and Blue Ghan for us and it turned out really nice.  I was trying to get some light from the window for this picture as it suddenly got very dark here.  Looks like a storm is coming.  Click to enlarge and check out the nice border stitching she used.    Do you see any of your squares here folks?  Some are knitted, some crocheted and they were of varying sizes.  Awesome Tristi, thanks so much for your help.

Got this photo before I lost the light in the living room.  Really pleased how this one turned out, very pretty pastels and several very interesting squares in this one.  Some of these squares I know go way back.  Another great job Trisit with the assembly work...the border in blue.......absolutely perfect, it really pulls it all together so nicely.

And...when we got together so I could take delivery of the awesome ghans, look what we had!  Tristi had ice tea and this yummy chocolate brownie with caramel sauce.
And I had this fabulous chocolate chi tea.  It was worth burning the tip of my tongue.  It was soooooooooo good.  We had fun chatting about family, yarn, the weather, vacations and what a neat place, The Chocolate Cafe' is.

Thanks so much for all your hard work Tristi.  Looking forward to our next outing.

Completed Afghans for Homeless Families Foundation

Thank you Tristi for putting this beautiful afghan, Crown Jewels together.  I love that you choose black to edge and join, it really pops!
This gorgeous ghan is called Purple Mountain Majesty.  Thank you Trisit.  I so appreciate your help with assembling these ghans.  These two afghans truly show team work at it's finest.  Squares from lots of different hands, some solids, some variegated, some granny style in stitches, others sorta sampler style all pulled beautifully together by Tristi's skillful hands.

These afghans are both nicely sized for families and will be very much appreciated by Homeless Families Foundation and the 2 families who received them.

And, as Tristi and I pass squares and completed ghans back and forth, we're enjoying the bonus of building a nice friendship as we get to know each other better with each visit over tea.

Retro Afghan for Homeless Families Foundation

Some of you might have already seen this awesome afghan Tristi assembled for us from donated squares.  Posted it on facebook the day she passed it back to me; but also wanted to get it here in que and get it tabulated.  We named this one Retro because it reminds me of the kitchens back in the 50's.

The ghans change so much from original design to completion.  Edges, colors, joins...make such a difference.

Here it was before

Awesome job, and I so very much appreciate the extra pair of helping hands with assembling aghans.  ...Seems like a perfect segway into........

March will focus on afghans and rain poncho's.  In addition to the afghan I assemble (or get help assembling) from your donated squares you can knit and or crochet completed afghans.  You can also make a quilt.  Guideline for colors and size etc can be found in the

Donations Delivered in Person

Look at these awesome crocheted slippers, Tristi K donated.  Remember you can always click pictures to make them larger to see more details etc.  Slippers all made with double strands of yarn so nice and thick and warm and sturdy.  The very best combination.  I LOVE slippers made with the double yarn, believe they really hold up and serve our purposes.  She's crocheted lots of different sizes, in lots of different colors.  AND...they are all nicely paired with fabulous tags indicating size.  Thank you Tristi.  Tristi is a new pair of helping hands, we're thrilled to have you join us.
She's also crocheted hats, cotton washcloths and a scarf.  Such a nice donation.  Again thanks for labeling the hats with size.  It's truly appreciated.  Tristi is local and so we were able to meet face to face when she passed this donation onto me.  I love getting to meet some of you good folks.  It's a real bonus.  We enjoyed a cup of tea and look forward to getting together again.  (speaking about tea, here's a post all you tea lovers should see)

She's also agreed to help me with assembling an afghan.  This afghan, titled Retro was designed some time back and has been waiting to be assembled.  I tend to assemble based on what yarn colors I have on hand.  I love the mix of colors of brown and turquoise and it reminds of the 50's kitchen colors.  Some squares are knitted, some are crocheted and they are a variety of sizes.  I used to accept a variety of sizes, but in order to get things done quicker I now accept 8 inch squares only....at designated times.  I'll not be calling for squares for some time to come, as I still have plenty on hand to work with.  PLEASE check the working calendar to determine when squares are to be mailed next.

In the meantime, do stay tuned to see the finished ghan.  This was my vision when I laid the squares out, she may have another.  Thank you Tristi for your help.

Please avoid novelty yarns, suede and all non washable fibers.
Please avoid the white, off-white, beige.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
