Crocheted Donations for the Homeless

Time to wash up!  Pictured here are cotton washcloths crocheted by our good friend Diana K.  LOTS of them.  Cotton washcloths have several uses and are greatly appreciated by many.  They are donated to folks as they enter a shelter, as they leave the shelters for their permanent housing situation, and for the folks living out in the elements.  They can be used as personal cotton washcloths and or dishcloths.
Diana has been very busy, as you can see she's also crocheted matching hats and scarves in a variety of colors.  I LOVE the color choices Diana, something appropriate for both the men and the women.  The Chevron style scarf is really very nice.  Using solid colors the texture shows up so well.
And as you can see, the hats have a nice thick brim for added warmth.  Hats with brims are also nice for heads of varying sizes.  Many thanks Diana for your generosity and please keep up the good work.

Crochet Hats, Scarves and Slippers for Ohio's Homeless

Hats, scarves, and slippers in this picture.  Awesome colors.  This marvelous donation is from our friend Diana K.  She and her hook must be battery charged.  She used the chevron (ripple) pattern to create these interesting scarves.  I love how the texture and shape show up so well with all nice solid colors.
And........yet there's more.  More hats and scarves crocheted and donated by Dear Diana.  Please keep up the good work Diana, we so appreciate all your efforts and generosity.

Folks, if you missed the previous post, please scroll back.  A knitted hat pattern was linked, and it was added to the hat tab.  Please check it out.

Scrolling back to this date last year, Sept 21st, 2013 I note we had donated 97 pairs of mittens/gloves which is 33 more then we've to date this year.  If you're one who can knit or crochet mittens, please do.  Cold hands are miserable.  Stay tuned folks, our good friend, RoseMarie is currently working on a pattern variation for fingerless gloves (crocheted) that I'll be posting to the mittens page.  While not full mittens, they would still be welcomed by those living in the shelters.

2014 DONATIONS:
Hats: 571+5=576
Scarves: 312+6=318
Socks: 110
Afghans: 15
Slippers: 69+1=70
Rain Ponchos: 55

Shawls, Sweaters, Vests, Poncho's, Skirts, and Shrugs etc. 13
Neck warmers, cowls, gators, wrists warmers/fingerless gloves and other misc items aren't tabulated; as well as personal care item

**Reminder to please remove hair (both human and furry friends), odors (from smoke or pets, cooking etc) from your donations.  Since all items require washable fibers, laundering your items before mailing is very helpful.  Laundering not only removes the hair and odors, it softens the fibers and gives a more finished look to all items.**

Crocheted Cotton Washcloths always a Hit

Thank you Diana K for this colorful collection of crocheted cotton washcloths.  Crocheted and knitted cotton washcloths are used in many ways.  They're used when folks come in from the street to obtain lodging at the various shelters, they're used in welcome home packs when folks transition from shelter to permanent living arrangements (both as washcloths and as dishcloths), they're used by the folks living in the elements under the bridges.  Donated cotton washcloths are always so well received.

Many thanks Diana for your on going support of the homeless and those in need here on Bridge and Beyond.  Please keep up the good work.

Looking back to this date, Sept 18th, 2013 we had donated 536 cotton washcloths.  We're well behind last years mark by 298 cotton washcloths.  Cotton washcloths are quick items to make if time is tight; though sometime back I did ask if you were debating between a cotton cloth and something that would keep someone warm to lean towards making something warm.  I would like to increase our numbers of cloths, but also still feel keeping someone warm is the more important thing to do....however, we could perhaps increase our number of cloths without necessarily topping last years numbers in an effort not to sacrifice warm items.

Temperatures have truly plummeted here in central Ohio.  We're much colder, much sooner then normal.  Some night temperatures have already dipped below 50, which has me thinking our first frost is not far away.  Sadly I saw my first tree with fall color the other day...a site which always saddens me; as I know the ice, sleet, and freezing temps are closing in on us.  Parts of the country have already had early snows.  I do hope that doesn't mean we're going to have another winter like last year; but am not feeling very hopeful in that direction ...given recent weather predications.

2014 DONATIONS:
Hats: 569
Scarves: 312
Socks: 101
Afghans: 15
Slippers: 69
Rain Ponchos: 55
Mittens & Gloves: 64
Cotton Washcloths: 224+14=238
Shawls, Sweaters, Vests, Poncho's, Skirts, and Shrugs etc. 13
Neck warmers, cowls, gators, wrists warmers/fingerless gloves and other misc items aren't tabulated; as well as personal care item

**Please remember folks, dark solids over brights, lights, and stripes**

Hats and Scarves for the Homeless

Thank you Diana K for this thoughtful donation of hats, scarves, and cotton washcloths.  Diane's been super busy with her crochet hook and yarn.  Pick a color........she's used it.  Diana sent 2 boxes of donations and I'm going to be showing you her other donations in the days to come.  Donations have been down folks, so thought I'd try dividing things up picture wise in order to post more blog posts...which if you've read the blog over the last 5 or so years you know helps with the SEO and placement of Bridge and Beyond.  Donations have fallen off, the blog's placement has fallen off, comments have fallen off.......so thought it worthwhile to try and boast things a bit.
Diana's scarves are made like a ripple which gives a cool effect and texture to the nice solid colors.  Diana can you share your pattern?  Would love to add this to our scarf tab.  Diane's hats have nice edging and texture also.  Remember you can always click on pictures to enlarge them so you can details better.

Many thanks Diane and please keep up the good work.

Crocheted Scarves Warm Those in Need

Thank you Diana K from The Peach Tree State of Georgia, where I'm sure it's much warmer then here right now.  As I type this scheduled post, it's snowing....Again!  We've had 5 snows before Thanksgiving, so this snow is #6 already this year.  I'm already tired of it folks.  Please click to enlarge so you can see the detail in these scarves, they look knitted but are crocheted.  They remind me of the feather and fan pattern in knitting...very cool.  Diana's also included some personal care items.

Thank you Diana, please keep up the good work.

I encourage everyone toClick Here to read a previous post, it's an important topic and I really need folks to be current with things here on Bridge and Beyond.

Crocheted Warmth to Help the Homeless

When my daughter was young I used to tell her it was the afghan, hat, or scarf that kept her warm; it was love put into the making of the item that kept her.  I think that so often when I open lovingly made items from you all.  Some knitted, some crocheted, some loomed; but all made and donated with love.

Here's certainly proof of that.  Diana K must not be sleeping in order to get this much made.  WOW.  Matching Hat and Scarf set, as well as additional crocheted hats, and cotton washcloths.  Lots of colors, lots of different sizes.  Something for everyone.  Awesome!

Many thanks Diana for your on going support, it is so truly appreciated.  Please keep up the good work.

Peach Colored Donations from Georgia

Awesome hats and scarves from our friend Diana K from Georgia.  Now I thought it was interesting that these red, peach colored, melon colored sets were crocheted and donated by someone living in The Peach Tree State.  Don't the pretty colors make you think of pretty peaches!  Many thanks Diana K. for your on going support for Ohio's homeless, please keep up the good work.

We're about half way through February, which as you know focuses on feet.  Both slippers and socks are the focus for February.  The focus for next month, for those who like to know ahead; will be afghans, and rain poncho's.  March can still be quite cold, but in preparation for April and rain thought we'd jump ahead a bit and make rain poncho's a focus.  The afghans are giving out with families transition from shelter living to permanent housing.  Afghans keep them warm, congratulate them on the accomplishment of moving out of the shelter living, and wish them luck for the future.

What's Inside Box Number 2 and 3?

Diana K has been more then busy.   Take a look and you'll see what I mean.  Holly cow, and Wow!!  Above see a purple and green granny square afghan (before I laundered and blocked it), a blue shawl, 4 squares, and 7 cotton washcloths.  Must not let my DD see the purple and green afghan, as those are her favorite colors.  Once laundered and blocked this will make a nice size afghan for a little girl, and or a lapghan size ghan for a teen or adult female.  What lady/girl/woman doesn't like purple and green!  But, wait folks this was only box #1....wanna see what was in box #2?
Of course you do.  Here then is box #2, crocheted and knitted matching hat and scarf sets.  The light green set is knitted and lighter weight then the others which are all crocheted.  I LOVE the salmon colored one, such a pretty shade.  But...hold on, there's still box #3................
I'm beginning to wonder if Diana stays up all night...how did you get sooooooooo much done?  This box contains 5 more matching sets (hats and scarves), all crocheted, and 47 cotton washcloths!  The cotton washcloths are stacked up, but if you click the picture to enlarge (which you can always do here on the blog) you'll be able to see the 4 colors.  Because blue and green has always been one of my personal favorite color combinations, I really that pile.  I've used that variegated cotton before as well, and it's quite pretty.

Thank you, thank you Diana for your wonderful donation, and your on going support, please keep up the good work.

**If you a person who visits the blog, but is shy and hasn't posted comments, let me nudge you a bit.  Why, you might wonder.  Visiting, spending time, and leaving comments helps the blog.  The more visits, the more comments this blog gets; helps it's placement with search engines.  A good placement with search engines is vital in the continued growth of the blog and it's ability to be visible to more people who may be searching for a place to make donations to.  You do not need to be a blogger to leave blog comments.  You need not be concerned about privacy either, you don't need to leave your last name.  I never do within my posts.  Beneath each blog post, you click comment and a white square pops up.  Type your comment there.  Then you click the drop down box which gives you options as to your signature...all you do is type your name (first name and maybe last initial or the state you're from), leave the url space empty if you do not have a blog/webpage, or profile page.  That's it!  Easy Peasy.  I know many of you have donated often over the last several years and have never left a comment.  PLEASE DO!  When you help the blog's placement, we attract more helpers which gives us the ability to reach more people in need.  So you see...it truly does help and is IMPORTANT.  The bonus is, everyone who donates loves to see nice comments about their donations, so please.....stop being shy and let us know you were here by leaving a comment.**

Donations Perfectly Packaged

Look how busy our good friend Diana K's been! She crocheted 22 fabulous cotton washcloths. Then got the help of The Sylvania Jr. Womens Club to supply soap. She folded and tied everything to make darling little packages. See how the soap is tucked in, such a cleaver and attractive idea. I took one soap out to try and show you....wait
here you go, now you can see. That's where I took the soap out. So simple and yet so cleaver. Many thanks Diana for your on going support. Hope to see you here often, please keep up the good work.

When I Grow Up

**just realized the picture didn't show with this post, sorry folks, did an edit and here are the squares.**

When I grow up, I gonna be............a blanket, an afghan, a warm snuggly afghan blanket. These squares all 46 of them come from our good friend, Diana K. When I was taking them out of the box, they were very busy chatting and bonding with one another, discussing what they were going to be when they grew up. lol

And why not? Most of us feel our yarn talks to us, so why not squares? Stay tuned to see what they become on down the road.

Thank you Diana K, you're awesome.

Why Diana K. Donates

A few days ago I posted about why I donate, and asked that some of you share your reasons. Not only does it help us get to know each other, I find it very inspiring to see what drive so many goodhearted people. In short order I heard from Sandie P by way of a comment, which I posted yesterday. I've gotten emails from our friend Wendy H, who's post is here.

Here then is Diana K's (from Georgia) incredible story. You might need a hanky for this folks. It's truly heartwarming, inspiring, and sad, all at the same time. Thank you Diana K. for sharing. Why I donate.

As I look back on my 76 years of life I realize I have been so very blessed by our God.

I could have been born in Hungary where my father was born except my widowed grandmother took her three children to America just before WWII. In January 1945, 32,000 ethnic Germans from within Hungary were arrested and transported to the Soviet Union as forced laborers. In some villages, the entire adult population were taken to labor camps in the Donets Basin. Many died there as a result of hardships and ill-treatment. Overall, between 100,000 and 170,000 Hungarian ethnic Germans were transported to the Soviet Union. I was ten in 1945 and could have been there.

I had a stable family. My parents loved each other and through thick and thin stayed together until death in their later years. So many children come from broken homes, unwanted, mistreated.

Although I was born during the Great Depression I never was homeless, never hungry, always had a place to get in out of the cold. I lacked nothing.

I’ve have a long happy marriage of 58 years with two children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Through inevitable trials and testing I have always been surrounded by those I love and who love me - never alone.

As I and look around me and see the hardships and misery of others not so well blessed my heart breaks for them.

Physically I cannot do a great deal any more but I can take up some yarn and create something to make life a little easier for others who have not been as blessed as I have been.

I pray that if disaster happens to me there will be someone out there who cares enough to relieve my suffering.

**This is a marvelous story of the human spirit. The Pink Lilly is the first of it's group to bloom in my backyard.**

Donations from The Peach Tree State

Thank you Diana K for this thoughtful donation from The Peach Tree State. I've mentioned Georgia's nickname before; but thought I'd give you some background this time round. Georgia's been known by many names, though Peach Tree is the one that stuck due it's production of Peaches, and the importance of peaches in the economy of the state. However, in more recent times, South Carolina actually produces more peaches then Georgia, the name continues.

Georgia has been called The Buzzard State (and in fact had protective laws for these savager birds), The Goober State (due to the large amount of peanuts grown), and The Cracker State. The later term was deemed to be derogatory as it referred to immigrants (those coming from Virginia and North Carolina).

Now when I think of Peach Tree, I'm reminded of the fun baseball movie where the women had a baseball team called The Georgia Peaches.

Thank you Diana K, and thank you for your on going support, Keep up the Good Work.

Donations from a Speedy Hook in Georgia

4 Squares, 5 matching hat and scarves set all crocheted and donated by Diana K from The Peach Tree State (Georgia). Unsure if Diana mailed her 3 boxes all at one time or whether they came at different times through out my time away; so am grouping them here all together. I love the pretty shade of purple! Obviously she used her left over yarn from the hats and scarves to make some granny squares too. Good utilization.
16 crocheted granny squares here....can you see how these plus the ones above are all going to go well together!
AND 6 more matching sets of hats and scarves. Woot Woot! Diana your hook must be on file! Many thanks for your thoughtful donations. Keep up the good work.

72 Toothbrushes...........36 for adults and 36 for children from Sylvania, Georgia. Through the efforts of our friend, Diana K the dental group, C. Howard Hagan & Craig Martinson group have gathered and donated toothbrushes. The shelters and those living in the street will be thrilled. Some of the brushes are plain, some are printed with Dr's Buddy Smith, Kyle Smith, and Richard Gentzler, III. Thank you all! Think how much better you feel when you get to brush your teeth, not too mention the added benefit of better health.

Diana was talking about our group, and it's cause while visiting her Dentist and this is the wonderful result. Thank you Diana for helping to spread the word. It's greatly appreciated.

Personal Care items are always needed for men, women, and children.

Sweet Georgia Brown

I couldn't help but sing, partially because this donation comes to us from our friend, Diana K from Georgia, and partially because ........LOOK! When I started opening boxes, I didn't realize more then one of the boxes was from Diana. Thus separate pictures. This is box 1....17 squares, 3 hats, and 2 scarves...plus personal care items. Awesome. Took photo, made note and moved onto another box or two...had several that day. Then

hit box 2 from our friend, Diana K from Georgia...see why I'm singing? Join me in the chorus. Followed by some lala's K! Box 2 had 6 more scarves, 8 more hats, 2 pairs of slippers.... AND
This rippled afghan!

Many thanks Diana for your thoughtful donation of goodies. So many will benefit. Scroll back up folks...anyone quess what Diana's favorite colors are, lol. Love the red and purples together!!

**Donations received and counted in the contest not yet posted from: Patty L, Bonnie B, Gail B, and Otterbeins "Stitches to Share", Suzy from Ohio, AnneMarie, Cheryl S, Shannon P., Trudy S, Wendy H, Sandie in Florida, Paula K. Sue F., Eliz R (need Eliz R to make contact with me)Theresa A. ** (remember posts are written ahead, placed in que...scheduled to be posted and we typically work about 2 wks or so ahead). Announcement of winners tomorrow, everyone be sure and check in, and leave comments so we know you were here.

***Please folks ALWAYS include a note with your donations that includes your name, your email ady and group we're in together (if that's how we know each other). It truly isn't possible for me to know and remember everyone over the number of years Bridge and Beyond has been in existence. I spend lots of HOURS, looking through emails, facebook friends, Rav friend, friends on The Hive and in The Ville; as well as yahoo mailing groups to try and identify donations without the information. I have no way of knowing if you want to be anonymous...if I knew that I could spend the time knitting and crocheting vs searching and searching. I do like to be able to let you know your donations have arrived safely and to be able to thank you. So PLEASE PLEASE, even if you want to be anonymous, include a note for me stating that. I fear when I can't make the identification, people just feel I'm not acknowledging their donations. That's not my choice. I want you to know your donation has been received, and that's it appreciated. There are times when after looking multiple days, and spending lots of hours I book something as unknown, and weeks later, I'll receive an email asking if their donations arrived. They feel bad, and I've wasted time. When your donation comes with a return address label with your husband's name...it's a good possibility, I don't know it's you. Additionally, the people who use nicknames in groups, and or fun names in their emails ady's typically don't come up in search when I plug in your real name (from the label) to find you. Please save the frustration at my end, and YOURS, include a note.

Donating Dry Feet

Many thanks Diana K for donating 30 dry feet. Think how uncomfortable and cold feet get outdoors with a variety of weather. Being able to change into something dry makes all the difference in the world. Even in warm weather feet get cold and wet and make people miserable. Diana these footies are so very much appreciated.

Having something dry to change into for your feet is so very important, thank you for the donation. I can even see how these footies might be used over socks even for added warmth.

**Contest going strong, remember the more you chat, the better your chances are to win**

Two Boxes of Donations

granny squaresThank you Diana K from the fabulous state of Georgia, The Peach Tree State for these 2 thoughtful boxes bursting with donations for Ohio's homeless. Colorful granny squares (pink, purple, yellow, gold, and blue). 60 squares that will be used to make afghans for Project "Welcome Home". I may make several from these squares by mixing them with others, I may do specific colors....have not yet created a design but the brain is engaged.

Diana also donated 5 scarves, 4 hats, 9 rectangles, slippers, and a darling Children's afghan. These photo's were taken right after I opened both boxes. Since then the afghan's been laundered and by the time you read this post (remember post are always written and placed in que), it's already been donated!

Many thanks Diane for your thoughtful donation, it's certainly appreciated. We hope to see you here often. Keep up the good work.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
