Caring for Homeless
I've been away, traveling outside the country and am in need of catching up. I want to thank those who visit daily, checking to see if there's a new post; that is appreciated. I want to thank Linda J from Texas, Janis F from LA, Kathy Banasik from MI, RoseMarie from TN, Sandra R from FL and Laura J from Ohio for your recent donations. Hopefully boxes will be opened in a day or two, photo's taken and blog posts written.
In the meantime, I thought you might enjoy reading this article...it certainly touches on our mission of caring for the homeless and given this special time of year, seems an appropriate post. Please click here to read the article.

Danting Crocheted Scarves
Scarves......we always need scarves. We donate scarves to men, women, and children. NOT toddlers or babies. The scarf tab has important information regarding dimensions, colors, fibers etc. Please check the tab and measure your scarves folks. No scarf should be less then 4 feet 6 inches long; and certainly longer for older kids, teens and adults. We want them to be large enough to be warm. Most folks wrap a scarf around twice.
Scarves are our last item to compare the numbers in terms of donations. In 2012 we donated 105 scarves by March 26th, in 2013 we more then doubled it! In 2013 we donated 226 and thus far this year.........still growing we donated 239. Well done folks.

Hats! Hats are needed by men, women, children, and teens. Hats are needed by those living in the shelters as well as those living out in the elements. We also supply hats for many schools with kids in need.
Knitted hats, loomed hats, and crocheted hats have been donated through the years. Hats probably make the single biggest difference in a person's comfort.....worn inside and out. Many with limited heat where hats and scarves in doors.
In 2012 by March 26th we had donated 212 hats, in 2013 269 hats and thus far this year 361 hats. As we've been comparing our donations these past several days for socks, slippers, mittens, afghans, rain poncho's and washcloths HATS are the only item where we've consistently knitted, crocheted, loomed and donated more hats each year!!
Awesome work!
Thinking of making a hat..........click here for the hat tab. There are patterns and LOTS of information regarding size, so ALL hats should come tagged with the size, (child, teen, adult s-m-l etc.).

Knitted and Crocheted Cotton Washcloths.
Crocheted Cotton Washcloths, tied to make pouch and hold a bar of soap. You might remember seeing this picture, though it was a really cute way to present a cotton washcloth. (Diana K's creation if memory serves me right).
Or knitted ones with designs......knitted or crocheted cotton washcloths are a nice way to donate without a huge time expenditure. All the shelters, as well as those living in the elements love the hand made cotton washcloths.
Here's the tab for the cotton washcloths
While not an item that keeps people warm, they are still appreciated. If you've missed the last several days, please scroll back. We've been comparing our donations from the years 2012 2013 to our current year as of March 26th. We've compared Mittens, Slippers, Afghans, Rain Poncho's, Socks and now knitted or crocheted cotton washcloths.
In 2012 we donated 27, in 2013 152 (wow, what a jump), and thus far this year 130.

Afghans are a Celebration
Afghans, this is one I made a few years back for my nephew, shuttering as I remember all those ends to tuck in.........was a LONG time before I made one with that many changes again. Really like the look, but not my favorite to work on.
I assemble (with the help of Tristi and Sherry) afghans from your donated squares. But, I still have an abundance of squares, so please don't send anymore.........at least not now. Those afghans as well as the beautiful ones you've made (both knitted and crocheted) have been donated to families as they transition from shelter to permanent housing.
Still using the date of March 26th, here's how we stand. In 2012 we donated 17 afghans, in 2013 8, and so far this year, 2014 we've donated 11.
Here's the link to the afghan tab, please take a look and consider making an afghan, or quilt.

Rain Poncho's and Socks aid the Homeless
These socks were previously donated, but I like to have pictures whenever possible with our posts. Socks are needed primarily for men, both those living out in the elements and those in temporary housing. Cold wet feet make a person miserable. Socks, store bought is an item non knitters and crocheters can donate to be involved......to help the homeless.
If you've missed the last 2 posts, please scroll back. One post compared numbers of donations for mittens, and the other slippers.
Using the same date March 26th for all these reflections. In 2012 we had donated 102 pairs of socks, in 2013 120 pairs...nice bump and thus far this year only 49 pairs. If you're able we'ld love to bump up those numbers. If you have friends who'd like to help but don't knit or crochet, please make the suggestion.
Rain poncho's, another item non knitters and crocheters can donate. Small and lightweight, but such a good item particularly for those living out in the elements. Also come in hand for those waiting for buses which many of our folks living in temporary shelters do as their job searching or getting job training to get back on the feet.
In 2012 by March 26th 2 poncho's were donated, same number for the following year 2013, and thus far this year we've donated 5.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?
I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.
Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
