Planting a Garden to help the Homeless

Faith Mission has been helping people in need with a hot meal, a warm bed, temporary housing, and or emergency walk in assistance since 1966. As many of you know it's one of the places we support with our knitting and crocheting. Nancy's Place is the temporary apartments for abused and or homeless mothers and their children. There's also a separate location for men to get in out of the elements and spend a night indoors. Faith Mission aids people with job hunting, house hunting, counseling and more.

A veggie garden to help with food needed is planted at 599 8th Avenue in Columbus, Ohio. This Sat. May 14th from 9 am to 12 noon a planting party is planned. If you can attend, bring garden equipment like rags, gloves, shovels etc. More details HERE, be sure and read about the rain date, should Mother Nature have other ideas.

  1. Great idea to have a garden to provide food for those doing without. Food donations are always good, but donations of home-grown is even better!

  2. I so agree, plus I think it helps them learn to to feed themselves on a reduces budget.

  3. Great idea. Glad they have a place for a garden. We still have snow on the ground in spots and it's been a wet spring so I'm hoping to get my own garden in. Wishing everyone good gardening weather!

  4. If I didn't live so far away, I would attend this event. With the economy as it is, I think this is an excellent idea! We should all have this kind of garden in our back yards!

  5. Best wishes on the garden . I'm way too far away to help, but certainly send "warm growing thoughts" to your veggies. Put a few flower in there, too, to lift the spirits.

  6. After repeated garden failures, I thought I would limit myself to a raised bed and container gardening. I can't even do that successfully. So, I've determined that it best for all plants involved if I become an ardent supporter of my local farmers' market.

  8. The drive is too far from Missouri, but I'll be there in spirit. To psmflowerlady: farmer's market vendors apprciate ardent supporters -- keep up the good work!

  9. garden time is so fun, i really like to visit others gardens. I don't like to garden myself, but nothing beats a tomato from the garden

  10. Keep us posted on the progress of the Garden. I don't know your growing season there but I do remember seeing apple trees for the first time on a trip through Ohio. May your beans be bountiful!

  11. Sandie in Fl, I didn't end up getting to go and help them in the garden, though will follow up to learn how it went. Sometimes, there just isn't enough hours in the day.

My "Garden" is a patio tomato in a big bucket! But I've picked two little beauties already, each one just one litle bite of sunshine. I hope you all have great DIRT and good WEATHER to make your 'maters happy and TO-MAY-TOE-RIFFIC!!
