Coalition for Homeless, Street Card for Homeless

These pages though a bit hard to read in picture format are what they call a street card and for anyone local a nice item to have on hand if you see someone in need.  And for those not local, check your city services to see if they have a similar item.  Print a few and keep in your car, or available in your church or other organizations you might belong to.
You can see this is a pretty extensive list, making you feel there's lots of help out there. And there is a good bit; but.........do the people who need know what's available?  Do the people who help know who to call,or have a phone to make the call?  Do those in need have transportation to get to the location where help might be available?  You'll note bus stop locations are included on this street card, which is an important peace.  Despite this list there are still many many people in need.  Here in central  Ohio the last stat I saw indicated  on any given night there were 12,000 here in central Ohio only.

Another difficulty with getting help can be couples vs singles.  Take another look at the list, you see single men, single  women, families, you don't see couples listed so if a man and a woman are together and in need of help that makes it more difficult, not impossible......but harder.  People need help, not roadblocks.

Please check your local area, do you have something like this street card  in your area?  PLEASE, let me know in your comments below, in an email, or in the contact me button in the right side bar.  I would love you to send me your area's equivalent help form.  Let's get some of these posted, to help others become more aware and encourage participation.  The weather's been chilly here already, way too early it feels like fall with it dipping  down to the 50's and 60's already at night.  I'm hopeful summer will return because if it's this cool now, I dread thinking how cold and long the fall and winter will be.

  1. Very interesting card. That is so nice for a homeless person to have with all that information on it. I have never heard of a card like that. I hope all cities have something like that.
It has been chilly here in MI also. Days in the 60's and nights are in the 50's. Good sleeping weather if you have a bed to sleep in. Next week is to be back in the 80's.

  2. If you have a bed, good point Sue. It worries me when it's this cool this early about what will follow.

  3. You know I thought of a couple of things. I find the homeless are aware of what is available for them in the area but most people, who have homes and are "aok", have no idea about all the services that are around. I think most homeless will not use the bus because of either no money or the bus driver may not pick them up. Another thing that homeless people may have and that is a dog or maybe, a cat. Usually they have a dog and they will feed the dog before themselves. It is their mate in life. That animal is the only family they may have. Donations may be good for some dog food or even a knitted sweater for the dog. It is one thing to say they should not have an animal but I have seen the people on the streets with their dog and the dog looks good and healthy. I am just thinking if you have seen this in your area??

    1. If they get any assistance bus passes are often a part of the assistance. Some do have dogs, but it's not the majority around here; but you're right when they do they often care better for the animal then they do themselves. And having the animal will keep from being accepted into most shelters, so it's a double problem for some street folks. And you can't ride the bus with an animal unless it's a trained medical alert type...like seeing eye etc. There are charities that cater to sweaters and blankets for animals in shelters, but I'm not currently aware of joint efforts between animal shelters and homeless shelters. I know Rae accepts donations of Pet food. Rae is the my friend who prepares hot meals on Sat mornings and deliveries them to those in the streets along with our hand knitted or crocheted warm items. I don't think lots of homeless know the multiple types of assistance that's available, and often though the list looks comprehensive, they don't quality across the board.
