Designing Afghans, Got Brown?

If you've been to this blog before, you know I like to name the afghans that are donated to our family shelters. This afghan show casing some fun brown squares from our good friend, minnisoda over on The Ville (Liz) is thus far named, "Got Brown". It's funky and fun. I'm not yet decided on what color I want to edge, join, and border with. Initially, brown seemed the logically option. Using blue would bring out the blue, but also make it more youthful; I think which is not what I have in mind. It's modern looking, funky looking to me, so I was thinking black? Though black is very traditional with grannie squares, I think here it might be non-traditional looking? And masculine?

It should be sized nicely enough to be a good family afghan also. Then again.........what would red look like with it? Thoughts? Please feel free to add your thoughts.

  1. I love love love love love those squares together and you have them arranged perfectly! I think it would look really great with dark brown for the border, and black would be good too. White could be a good option, there's white in some of the squares. I think red might take away from the beautiful contrast of the brown and blue. I love brown and blue together. It's one of my favorite color combinations! I made Owen a blanket with baby blue, brown, tan, and off-white stripes. Now I'm making him another with baby blue, light brown, and white stripes, and that one is turning out even better than the last one.

  2. I agree with Anna, red would take away from the overall look. I think a tan, like what's in the blanket, brown, or black. Excellent job, as always Sandie!

After writing that post I nixed the red idea too. I like red and brown together, but not with the blue. Started the process after posting this scheduled post and am using black for for edging and joining...stay tuned.

  4. I know this is off the wall, but have you considered green - like an olive green? Can't tell on my monitor how true-blue the blue is but I've seen some very nice brown blue and olive greens together. And maybe it was the "got brown" that made me think of it, but when I saw the blocks, I immediately thought, "got chocolate milk".

  6. I too think the dark brown is good for the edging. I agree the red would ruin the beauty of these squares. The tan would be nice too but I leaning towards dark brown.
Thank you for letting us comment and being a part of your decision making for this worthy cause.
