Brickyard, The Afghan and Homeless Village

The Brickyard is the nickname for The Indianoplis 400.  Why you might wonder.  The track was started in 1909 but was crushed stone and tar.  It was very dangerous.  It was slippery and caused accidents.  Stones flew up hitting drivers goggles causing accidents and even hitting their cheeks.  The stones and tar were covered over with bricks which was huge improvement.  Gradually bricks were covered with pavement.  By 1937, all but the start finish line were covered.  Drivers knee and kiss the bricks.  Bricks were red, gray, yellowish.....which is what caused me to name this afghan in the works Brickyard.

If you scroll back to the last post you'll it originally laid out.  And here, some headway has been made.  Some (maybe a half the squares) are edged and about 1/3 sized and joined (the left side).  Chipping away.  As you can see not many of the squares are the same size so it's not a quick process.  But, with our stay at home orders, and the weather not being nice enough to get outside much...I do seem to have more time to work on it.

In the midst of these troubling times, perhaps some good news is in order.  These are tents for homeless.  The picture is a link to the full story from The Tampa Bay Times.  100 tents in all, with electric, means of garbage disposal have been built.  It's called Hillsborough Hope.  The article is written by Christophere O'Donnell.  The community and Catholic Charities put this village together to provide housing, food, and medical care to the homeless.  The homeless are very vulnerable right now, even more than ever.  Homeless will be referred here by the police.  The location of this village is being kept a secret for safety and security reasons.

Thank you Hillsborough County, Tampa Florida for thinking of The Homeless, particularly when the governor of the state of Florida still hasn't issued Stay at Home Orders.  Parts of the state are on lock down due to forward thinking mayors trying to protect their cities.

Please do click on the picture to read the whole story.  It's nice to read something good with all the sad news we have currently in front of us.

Rolling Hills Afghan Ready to be Donated

Rolling Hills is now completed.  It's been laundered and is being blocked and drying, as we speak.  The colors aren't quite right as it's showing up here, my light must have been a bit wacky.
There's the more true colors before stripes were evened out, edge and joined.  Added several inches on each side as well to make it a better width.

Brickyard will be the next project.  Stay tuned.

Hope you're all keeping busy during our various shut downs, stay at home orders etc.  Please stay safe and well.

Crocheting Helps The Homeless

Thank you Gail B from this wonderful donation of crocheted goodies.  Lots of scarves here in this picture.  Didn't have enough room to lay them all out, so you see most of them are folded up, but if your click to enlarge, you should be able to see the variety.  All the scarves are large enough to wrap around to be warmer.  Nice colors too.
Gail has also included some pretty cotton washcloths in her donation, along with hats nicely tagged with size, and a very pretty edged scarf.

Many thank for your thoughtfulness and your long time support of Ohio's homeless through Bridge and Beyond.  Please know you made a difference, an important one.

As always, please keep up the good work.

Personal Care so Very Much Needed by the Homeless

WOW!  look at all the goodies.  This is quite a haul of personal care items.  Toothpaste, toothbrushes, chap stick, shampoo, lotion, dental floss, wipes.  This will be very helpful to lots of folks.  Thank you Sarah S for this very thoughtful donation.

As you know things in our country are very serious, very scary right now.  We've been told to stock up, to stay in, to shelter in place, to not go to work or school etc.  It varies a bit state to state; but one group that must be very much in danger are our Homeless.  Many have on going health issues, many don't have the ability to wash their hands, or have sanitizes etc.  So, these personal care items I know will be very well received.

I hope everyone is taking care of themselves and others.  Many thanks Sarah and please keep up the good work.

Most of the hats are knitted, but a couple are crocheted.  Several of the hats are doubled which will make them especially warm.........so nice and needed.

Many thanks for your long term support of Bridge and Beyond, it's greatly appreciated.  Please keep up the good work and know you are valued and make an important difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
