Potpourri of Warmth for Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Kathy for your potpourri of knitting and crocheting. Kathy had delivered 8 squares, 10 headbands/earwarmers, 9 hats, and 3 scarves. Kathy is our newest pair of helping hands. YIPPEE, love getting more helping hands. Kathy and I became acquainted through Facebook. In doing so we discovered not only is she a fellow Ohioan; but she lives in a small town where I lived in my early childhool. How's that for a small world folks? She and I were able to meet face to face which is always fun. We had a nice lunch while getting to know each other a bit better. Look forward to doing that again, and look forward to more warm goodies for our homeless and those in need off her hook and or knitting needles.

Having new helping hands is good, having a face to face meeting with a new friend is awesome! From memory, I believe this is the 3rd time I've gotten to meet someone in person who was donating after first meeting them here on the blog, or in a group on RAV or similiar type on line group.

Making headway folks with identifying where everyone is from, but still working on it. Please check the lists (both with and without blogs), to see if I have the state your from listed. If it's not listed by your name I can't add it to the map. Creeping forward on that, knowing this is a scheduled post (as they all are in que), as of the writing of this post 24 states are listed on the map giving us a 48% of the country. And you'll also note we have friends abroad in addition to that.

Adding Michigan to our lists of Donating States

Thank you Bridget for your above thoughtful donation. Not only are you our latest pair of helping hands, I believe you are the first person from The State of Michigan to donate to the cause here in Ohio. Woot Woot! That's at least true from when I started noting and keeping track of where the wonderful knitters and crocheters with such big hearts hail from. If however one of our other pairs of helping hands comes from your state, please sing out. Would love to be able to update both lists of donators (with and without blogs).

I love the darling flower you added to the pink crocheted hat. Bridgets other donations are knitted.

Colorful Blocks Afghan for Faith Mission

Woot Woot! Another warm afghan for our folks in need at Faith Mission. If you've not read anything on this blog before you may not known, Mothers and Children live in temporary housing there at Faith Mission. These Women and Children have been homeless, they've been abused, and come to Faith Mission with very little. We're warming them physically with hats, mittens, scarves, and slippers. Beyond that we're warming them squares and afghans. In addition to the physical warm we provide, our hope is they'll have an afghan to take with them as a house warming gift when they leave their temporary housing situation and are phased backed into society in a more permanent way.

Through our program, "Give a Square" we collected squares both knitted and crocheted measuring from 7 to 10 inches during the months of November and December of 2010 and January of 2011. I've had fun designing afghans of all different sizes with these squares, and with squares I had on hand previously. The program will be activated again in the future, so feel free to continuing making squares to be ready when the call goes out to have them mailed, you'll be ready. Pictures of all ghans donated to date available by clicking on above Give a Square, as well as additional information.

The above ghan, "Colorful Blocks" was assembled from knitted squares donated by RoseMarie with sage green yarn donated by Darling Daughter, Christine. A team of 3.
Sorry this picture is a little blurry. Tried to get a close up for you of the border. This ghan measures 56 x 41. Believe color and size make it appropriate for a male or female teen, as well as adult female.

Super Warm Crocheted Hats

Thank you Jenny S. from Ohio for these 4 super warm crocheted hats for our cold homeless here in Ohio. Love the red and black. It's always fun to see how differently colors can be arranged to get a completely different look. These hats will be extremely warm as she used nice tight single crochet stitches. The hats vary in sizes too which is always an added bonus with heads being so many different sizes.

Yellow Cheery Scarf

A crocheted yellow and green scarf with fringe. I made this smaller then I normally make scarves thinking it would be appropriate for a teen or female adult. It's about 6 feet long and 6 inches wide, I often go wider and longer with scarves, but worked on this at lunch during work.

Man sized Crocheted Scarves

Two awesome scarves, great sizing for our men in need and a crocheted hat from Rajani our newest pair of helping hands. Welcome to the group Rajani, we're glad to have you and your hands join us. Rajani is from PA, and so we've been able to add another state to our map at the bottom of the page. Hope you've checked it out to see if you're state is represented. Sock It To Me Month!

That's me, rather my socked foot "kicking off" SOCK it to ME MONTH. Purchased 2 large packages of socks the other day to get's us started with March's "SOCK it to ME MONTH". Thank you Sherri I, adding your money I was able to buy both packages. AND the bonus here the regular packages contain 10 pairs of socks, but they had a special in that each contained 11 pairs....bonus! 22 pairs of clean, warm, and dry socks for those in need. This is our 2nd month in a row with a focus on feet.

Feet are so important they need to be taken care of so they...the feet can take better care of the rest of the body. Yesterday ended our February focus on slippers, Toasty Tootsie's, and as of the writing of this post we collected 8 pairs of slippers. Thanks to all who participated in that special project. I'm hopeful, we'll continue to receive slippers....perhaps some are still in transit with today just being March 1st.

As with all our special projects, Toasty Tootsie's won't go away never to be heard from again, it will for now be dormant (like Give a Square). We collect all items Hats, Scarves, Mittens, Slippers, and Socks all year long. This will be our 2nd Sock it to me Month, as we had one in June of 2010.

Socks should be store bought and primarily be for adults (mostly males); as they are the bulk of those living outdoors. The men in the shelters are also in need of socks.

I'm still in the hunt for emails for Patty L from Ohio, Adrienne L from NY. PLEASE folks another reminder to include an email, blog url, or group we might be in together as means of contact. I know many of you by your avatars from groups, or from your email which typically isn't your real name so when fabulous donations came with a real name it sends me on quite a hunt to figure out who's who.

Hookers Helping the Homeless....Awesome

RoseMarie has helped us again with her crochet hook. Hats, scarves, leg warmers, and squares. And look to the far left in the picture, she sent along dodads. I'm sure there's a real name for them, but I don't know what it is. Dodads are cool decorative things that can be added to garments like hats and scarves. She crocheted cute little flower like decorative items in several colors. I'll use these RoseMarie, heck might even add a couple to a ghan or something. Keep checking in to see what becomes of them.

Colorful Blocks for Faith Mission, stage 2

These 25 colorful knitted squares accompanied me this past weekend to and from St. Louis. You might remember this donation from Rose Marie HERE (though some of these colorful knitted squares came in her later donations too).
I've used her squares here and there making ghans for those abused and or homeless mothers and children and delivered them to Faith Mission. I made one entire ghan HERE of her burgundy and blue squares.

The sage green yarn used in the edging here is a gift from my DD, Christine. I was able to get all 25 squares edged on the return from ST. Louis trip, so they are now ready for stage 3 which is the assembly process. Stay tuned.

My car trip was a very productive one. On the way to St. Louis I worked on a Baby Blue Ghan for my nieces, soon to be born little one...you can check it out here.

Helping Hands for Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Pat from Ohio, our newest pair of helping hands. Knitted yummies abound. 3 soft hats, 6 warm scarves, 1 cute pair of slippers, and a combo hat/scarf. I personally love these hat scarf combo's. Anyone know if they have a name? I have an especially small head for an adult and so sizing is an issue. These combo units are great for that, also great for versatility.

Mother and Daughter Team up to Help Homeless

Rebeccah's mother, Cindy put this darling patch blanket together. Click to enlarge the picture. I'm not sure if she re-purposed sweaters to make this, but it looks like a good possibility. I love the color combination here and know whomever receives this is going to be warm and happy.
This ghan of many colors makes me think of a quilt, log cabin I think it what this style square when quilted is called. Another beautiful bright cheery crocheted afghan to warm those in need at Faith Mission. Cindy and her daughter Rebeccah are from Ohio. What a marvelous mother daughter team.

Socks are so Important!

We never have too many pairs of socks. Socks, store bought socks (primarily for men) are needed all year long. Cold, wet feet are a problem even in warmer months when you live outdoors in the elements. Thank you Patty L from Ohio for your donation. It's very much appreciated, truly.

Socks are important, and they will be the next month's feature. March will be Sock it to Me Month, for folks who like to plan a bit ahead. I'll probably make us a button/badge etc later so the feature is clearly seen on the blog. So, keep an eye peeled.

Sock it to Me Month following Toasty Tootsie's seemed to be so appropriate. Our feet do so much for us they deserve lots of attention. Why are feet so important you might ask yourself. What can you do, where can you go that your feet don't carry you? How much do you hurt all over if your feet hurt? How cold are you all over if your feet are wet and cold? Having a warm, dry pair of socks on can be very beneficially and help to keep one healthy. So, we do ask for and collect socks all year long, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.

Soft wonderful warm hats. The kids will love these knitted hats from our friend Louise out in California. Doesn't the one on the left remind you of Easter Eggs? First thing I thought of when I took it out of the pouch.
And the ladies will love these warm hats. Look at the cute details (remember all pictures get bigger when you click on them.) Louise sent 2 pouches and they arrived on the same day. I opened and photographed one then noticed the next pouch was her's too...thus the 2 pictures of 3. Thank you Louise for your on going support, it is greatly appreciated.

Hey folks have you noticed in the blog posts and on the lists (particularly the non bloggers list of names), I've been adding what state you're from? I thought it might be fun to see where everyone is from and how widely spread our wonderful knitters and crocheters are. AND, with the fabulous increase in new helping hands we have some duplicate names...AND as we grow my ability to keep people straight in my mind needs some help. The number of donations that come without a note causes me to really search through old emails etc to try and determine who sent the thoughtful donation. So, if you're on the list and I don't have the state you hail from, please leave a note I can add it. Knitting from Nola

Knitted warmth and caring from Nola in Colorado. I love the feel of the yarn she used in the reddish, pinkish variegated scarf. It's really nice. And look how nice and wide it is, making it really nice and warm. Her hats look really tiny in the picture by comparison, but they are quite stretchy so really aren't as tiny as they appear. What's that saying you see sometimes on the mirrors in cars, items appear ...lol anyway, many thanks Nola for your knitted thoughtfulness for our homeless here in Ohio. They are greatly appreciated.

Important Announcements

I love opening boxes and pouches filled with lovingly knitted or crocheted items to help our fellow man. You all are awesome for giving your time so freely, for caring and doing for others. Every single item is truly appreciated. I do, however need to ask/remind you all to PLEASE include a note in your donation. I know some people from blogging, some from Crochetville, some from Ravelry, some from The Hive, and some from Facebook. And some from non of the previously mentioned groups. In many cases, I know your avatar, your on line persona, your on line nick name, the alias you use perhaps when you blog. It's becoming increasingly more difficult to determine what thoughtful person sent donation x z y. It's not uncommon for me to sort through a hundred or so emails looking for someone that asked for my address to see if I can fill in the mystery. I truly do want to thank you, and to give you credit on the blog for your wonderful knitted or crocheted donations. Sometimes return mailing labels have a spouses name rather than the name of the crafter. So, please folks include your name, email or what name I know you under. It will save me lots of time, and you won't wonder if your items arrived, as I'll be able to let you know sooner.

I'd like to ask a favor of my friends with furry family members. My allergies get me sneezing when I open, photograph, sort etc your thoughtful donations. I often use one of those sticky rollers to remove as much cat and dog hair as I can; not knowing if the person who receives the items might have allergies as well. If you could do that before mailing, I'd appreciate it. (sometimes a piece or two of scotch tape works well too)

I've been looking for YNC from Virginia (believe Reshon Virginia?, was hard to read, think it smeared when it got wet). Anyone know someone with those initials? Would love to say thank you for this wonderful donation of 8 hats, 2 scarves, and 4 decorative flowers. I added some of those cute flower things to a couple of hats before donating.

**I also feel the need to remind all knitters and crocheters not to tie a knot and cut, it's imperative to always have a tail of at least 4 inches when adding yarn, or changing colors. It's a pretty sure bet that when yarn is joined with a knot, and then the tail cut close to the knot the item will come unraveled**

Knitting and Crocheting Help From Virginia

As you can see we have some fun bright colored squares that made it here, just after Give a Square went into hibernation. Fear not, these squares will be used with the others the next time I get to designing. So stay tuned. I'll get a few more ghans assembled first in order to get them to those folks in need at Faith Mission. In addition to great squares Cecile sent 3 scarves, some knitted and some crocheted. SWEET Sweaters

WOW...when I grow up I want to knit as well as Phyllis. Beautiful, cute, warm knitted sweaters, (5), and 2 hat and scarf sets. I've posted a close up of the darling hooded sweater below. Phyllis you've made children not only warm with your craft; but stylish too! Your work is truly beautiful, and your thoughtful donation is very much appreciated. Phyllis sent warm wishes to us too, from her sunny state of Florida. I basked in the virtual sun....thanks Phyllis, I needed it.

Knitted Love

Knitted love = warmth! People taking time to knit and crochet something special for someone else is such an expression of love and caring. Trudy in Maryland has clicked her needles together and made these loving warm items to help the homeless and those in need. The peach color is sooooooo pretty, makes me think of spring which I hope comes soon; as I'm very tired of this winter.

Warming Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Amy, another new pair of helping hands. We are so fortunate that so many new pairs of helping hands are finding us and being willing to join our cause and help our cold homeless here in Ohio. Amy crocheted 6 squares, 2 hats, and 2 pairs of slippers. All good things to help warm someone up in need. I missed Amy's squares earlier when I tried to get all the squares in for the final count...things that came while and right after I was out of town. So, will go and update our Give a Square page to reflect this new number.

Since all my posts are written and in que (in order to have a post each day), when you read this it might not be; but is snowing AGAIN, as I write this post. The need continues folks so please keep those hands busy with yarn and crochet hooks and or knitting needles. Together, we are indeed helping!

Mufflers, Scarves What do you Call them?

I ran across the word muffler the other day and remembered hearing that term alot when I was younger. So, I wondered...what do you call them in your neck of the woods....the think you wrap around your neck?

Three knitted scarves and a hat from Eve in Illinois. The scarves are so nice and soft someone is going to love having them wrapped around their neck! Eve is our newest pair of helping hands. Thanks so much Eve for your thoughtful donations, they are greatly appreciated.

Crocheted Scarf, every color possible.

I love all the colors in this ombre yarn. I think these colors work for adults or children, for males or females. Nothing fancy just good old double crochets using a H hook so there's very little space between. I like using smaller hooks to make items more solid and therefore warmer. This was a good take to work project. I could do a couple of rows here and there during lunch; and finished it up in the car while hubby and I ventured out of town recently in search of warmer weather. (some Hilton Head posts on my Travel blog). I like projects you don't have to worry much about counting or measuring when you're traveling. This nice warm scarf is large and will therefore be adult appropriate measuring 7 1/2 inches wide and 80 inches long. I like scarves large enough to be wrapped around twice for warmth, or used as a head and neck scarf at the same time (at least for women).

If memory serves me right this yarn ombre mix is very close to the colors I used way back in the day when I made my very first scarf. It was one of those little head scarves you tie under your chin. Anyone old enough to remember what I'm talking about? lol

Hats, Beanies, Taboggan so many words

There are so many words one can use when talking about a hat. Here's just a few: Hat, cap, beanie, beret, bonnet, cloche, fedora, skull cap, sombrero, tam, and toboggan. Toboggan can be confusing, as many think of a sled rather than a hat. Depends, I believe what part of the country you're from. But, whatever you call it; hats are awesome to aid the homeless in keeping warm. And, whatever your word choice is these hats from our good friend Sandie in Louisiana are awesome as always. Her work is always so well done. These 2 crocheted hats are nice and warm and large enough for adults. I know they will make 2 more people warmer, and glad to be wearing a hat,cap,beanie, toboggan, beret, bonnet, cloche, fedora, skull cap, sombrero/tam.

Knitted Help from New Jersey for Ohio's Homeless

Wonderful knitted hats (3), and scarf from Sally in New Jersey to help our homeless here in Ohio. The middle hat and scarf look black in the photo, but are a nice navy blue. Sometimes photo's don't seem to show certain colors well; not sure why though?

I love seeing new pairs of helping hands from all over helping and am thrilled Sally found us. Looking forward to seeing you around often Sally and very much appreciate your thoughtful donation.

Smiles at the End of the RAINBOW

During the month of January we had the opportunity to have a partnership with some darling and caring young children from Rainbow Day Care. These darling little ones are reaching out to others. They are giving out smiles at the end of the Rainbow. Having just finished celebrating Christmas with their families, they continued through the guidance of their teacher Erika to keep the "spirit" of Christmas alive. Their lessons for the month of January focused on caring and giving to those less fortunate. To begin to learn about people being homeless. How wonderful to teach the spirit of giving to others at such a young age. They kept their Christmas Tree up and adorned it with hats, mittens, etc. for children. They asked who might not have these items, and who might wear the items they donated. They discussed the fact that little girls would probably wear the pink hats, and boys the blue hats. They helped their teacher count their donations. Lots of good life lessons being taught here; as well as the wonderful help for homeless.........Children helping children how sweet is that!

The kids collected 39 pairs of mittens/gloves and 17 hats. Think how wonderful it is that, that many children can now be warmed.

While I'd love to show you those smiling giving faces, to protect the children am posting a picture of their giving tree so beautifully decorated with their thoughtful donations. The children have continued to learn about those in need by moving onto their next project of collecting canned goods to help those who are hungry.

And look how many pairs of hands can be warmed!

Thank you Erika for spearheading this wonderful and worthwhile project at Rainbow Day Care, and THANK YOU CHILDREN! You are all awesome.

Final Counts for Give a Square!

Thank you Sarah S (from The Hive) for your ongoing support and beautiful work to help our cold homeless here in Ohio. Look at these 3 darling sets of matching mittens and hats! The hats are knitted, the mittens are crochet. In additions she sent 4 very nice crocheted squares which you know I'll add as I continue to design and join afghans for those in need.

The 2 pair of heavy warm socks is such a bonus and the men will really appreciate them.

The Give a Square program was a 3 month program and during those 3 months 390 squares were collected and added to some I had on hand. To date we've donated 17 afghans to the homeless (2 went to our friends at Pine Street). Waiting in the wings to be assembled are 8 ghans already designed. In addition, I have enough squares and rectangles on hand to design more! Very definitely a good project that produced a good outcome. I'll continue to design and post pictures and continue to work on assembling and keep you all posted. Pictures of all ghans available by clicking on above red Give a Square Text.
