11 Lovely Knitted hats for our our homeless and folks in needs. WOW, thank you Sandra. The kids are gonna love these adorable warm hats. I'm particularly fond of the spiral stripes and must look into what pattern that is. I've added Sandra's blog link to our blog log, hope over and say hi. I'm sure you'll enjoy your visit at Thistle Cove Farms was Sandra knits, spins, cooks and many other things.
Thank you also Sandra for yarn donation. I've already begun knitting with the pink. It's 3 ply, so a bit lighter weight. At the moment I think it's headed to be a baby blanket for one of a couple charities, depending on it's finished size. If not a baby blanket, I believe it would make a wonderful Kidney Kozy.

Anne Crochets for the Homeless

Look how adorable these little mittens are! Had to get a close up picture for you. Anne G, our newest member sent a box full of lovely goodies the other day.
Hats, hooded scarves, and mittens. You know how excited I get when we get mittens. I bet you can see me clapping! She's got a wonderful selection of colors and lots of different sizes here. I was able to separate hats and mittens for the homeless under the Bridge (adult sizes), and some for the cold kids and Mom's treated at the two clinics. So many beautiful items here to warm and help so many. Anne G, you rock!

There never seems enough time to make as many things as we want or need; but we keep at it one day, one item, one stitch at a time. Remember YOU ALL truly are appreciated and YOU ALL do indeed make a difference.

Our Friends at Pine Street

Above crocheted afghan is now done and mailed. You've seen this in a couple of stages. This is made up of squares and rectangles (various sizes) from my DD, Sandie and her DD Kate, Alma and several from anonymous givers from previous groups that disbanned and sent me their odds and ends. It measured about 56 x 52. I had the cream I did the initial edging with in my stash; and the navy came to me about a week ago from Emily (on RAV) who was de-stashing.


This corner to corner afghan is knitted. Actually my first knitted ghan. Believe it measured right around 48 x 48. The yarn in this ghan came from a variety of people before making it to my stash. Donated yarn from my DD, Bunny, and Rae's mother. Lydia and Tony bought me yarn in exchange for me helping them out, one with genealogy and one for making a blanket for a grandchild. In addition to the above 2 ghans, I mailed a few 9 x 9 squares that Alma and I made to our Friends at Pine Street. These will be used as housewarming gifts for homeless who will have a roof over their heads. What a cause to celebrate.

A Soapy Connection

Through The Hive ( click here to you read my previous post), I've met Cyndy. Allow me to introduce her to you. Cyndy makes soap. She loves all forms of crafting; but is especially fond of old time homesteading types of crafts. Certainly making soap is that.

She is in the process of donating some of her fabulous handmade soap for our friends in need under The Bridge. You may recall how I periodically put together soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and other personal care items to accompanying our much need hats, scarves, and mittens. I'm thrilled. Not only is she big hearted by donating, but this soap is made from all natural materials no chemicals and is therefore healthy for our skin (and there's). Cyndy started her soap hobby back in 2003, and in 2009 it grew into a business. She grows her own ingredients in her garden in Northwest Illinois. Our Homeless Friends need Helping Hands

Have you noticed this new Icon/Badge in my side bar? I hope so. The Hive is a new place to hang out, make connections, and have fun. By making connections I mean connect with other cool crafters like yourself. Some knit, some crochet, some mold clay, some sew, some work with wood, others paint, others bead and on and on and on. Some are hobbyist like me, others professionals, some are artist, others are manufacturers. It's new, it's fun, it's easy.

Always looking for ways to spread the sad news that homelessness exists, and the happy news that we can and DO, make those who are homeless a little more comfortable. We strive to make them realize they are not forgotten. We strive to make their lives better, one stitch at a time. AND we do, each and every day with hats, mittens, and scarves lovingly knitted, loomed, or crocheted by caring crafters. I've joined The Hive.

You can too. Click on the Badge in my side bar, or the Red Words The Hive above. Join, have fun, help me spread the need for more helping hands to help us help the homeless. You can do more then that too. You can enjoy seeing what others work on, you can connect via blogs with folks who share some of your other hobbies. I know most of you do more then crochet or knit. Corner to Corner Ghan is done, for our friends at Pine Street, and Bit's of this (stage 1 HERE) and that is in it's last stages. I'm hoping to finish it in the next day or so.
You can see once I edge everything to even up sizing a bit with off white (in the previous picture, stage 2 Here), I decided it needed a little something else. Sections of similar sized areas were edged with navy, working now on connecting those pieces then will decide about some final edging. I think the projects changed quite a bit as it's progressed.

Edging and piecing together

This is the second stage, stage I here. You can see it's coming together a bit more now that things are edged, or in this picture almost edged. Some squares and rectangles reguired 2 rounds, some 3 and some only 1 to make them fit. Several required a bit more than that. But, it's working. I had taken this photo a couple of days ago so am actually now further along in that this part of the edging is done. It's actually now more pieced together. Will keep you posted. My goal is to finish this in the next couple of days in order to get the 2 ghans out in the mail together to Pine Street. Goal...might not make it, but it's the goal I'm working towards.

Before Blocking a Knitted Afghan

This is my completed corner to corner ghan. My first knitted ghan. I do enjoy knitting; but typically crochet ghans. This ghan is knitted corner to corner using the very basic dish cloth pattern starting out with casting on 4 stitches and ending up with 4 stitches before the bind off. I meant to count how many stitches were on the middle row before I began my decease but didn't. Knitting always requires blocking while crochet usually doesn't. One of the reason's I tend to crochet ghans more then knit them. However, I like the mindless ease of the corner to corner ghan and even when just using the basic stitch think the corner to corner business adds to the over all design of a ghan, adds interest I think. It also makes using up odds and ends easier as you don't have to worry about having enough yarn to make really long rows all the time. I didn't count the number of rows before changing colors, changed when I felt like it, or when the yarn looked like it might be running out. You can see some of the colors were repeated, some not. Even where the colors repeated, I might have stopped because I was at the end of that ball. Sometimes you have multiple little balls of the same color.

A good portion of this yarn was from my stash, some was donated by Dear Bunny, some from my DD, some from Rae's Mother, some from Lydia, and some from Tony. So, while I did the knitting, it seemed like a group project to me.

After putting it in the laundry, I blocked it for several days while I was working on the Bits of this and that ghan which will also be for our friends over at Pine Street.

HATS of many Hues for Homeless

This is post #186(only 14 post left before we hit 200 when the winner of the blog contest will be announced)

Our luscious loomer comes through again with flying colors! Look at these wonderful wonderful hats. Solids, varigated, ton tones....Frank's knitted on his faster than the speed of light looms again. WOW, he leaves me speechless. The larger hats will go directly to our folks under the bridge while the others will be divided to keep kids and their moms warm at the 2 free clinics.

I feel like cheering. Frank Frank he's own man, if he can't do it, nobody can! Ok, I know corny cheer like that show how old I am; but seriously if I could do a handstand or a cartwheel or anything along those lines; I would indeed be cheering. Kids, Moms, and the homeless men under the bridge will all benefit from Franks fabulous hats.

Knitting Scarves for the Homeless

These 2 light'n'lofty scarves were knitted. Originally I had planned to donate these scarves to Passions of the Heart, but they turned out warmer then I anticipated they would be. Guess it's been awhile since I've knitted with that yarn and had forgotten how thick and warm it is. So, since they're warm decided they were better suited for people in need of warmth; bodily warmth as well as emotional warmth and these have now gone to our Bridge and Beyond Charity to warm homeless here in Central Ohio.

The picture was taken just before I finished the 2nd scarf, had to tuck ends in and add fringe; but I was busy taking lots of pictures and decided to go ahead with the photo for convenience.

I finished the corner to corner ghan last night except for trim and tucking in ends which hopefully will happen in the next couple of days. So, keeping busy trying to stock pile items for the homeless here in Central Ohio. When the cold hits suddenly, we do want to be prepared.

Chipping away

Chipping away at my corner to corner ghan. Put it away for awhile as I needed small items to take out of town, and small items to take to work to work on at lunch etc. But, wanting to show the progress here on the corner to corner ghan for our friends at Pine Street. Using up odds and ends, some from my stash some that folks have gifted and donated to me. Fun to see the variety of colors. I'm officially over half done as I'm now doing the decreasing part, though knitting is indeed slower then crocheting. However, knitting seems to bother my arthritis and carpal tunnel a bit less. What really seems to work is a nice blend of each so hand and arms, shoulders etc. don't get overly tired.

Natually am continuing to work on the Bits of This and That Ghan for the same cause picture here. AND, don't forget to read all about the contest where you can win yarn and related goodies. So far we have one our of members entered, Sandie. Best of luck to you Sandie and all others who get involved. Might have more by the time you read this, since this is a scheduled post. So this then makes it 16 posts needed to reach our 200th landmark which is why we're celebrating by having a fun contest and giving away goodies.

Life gives us bits of this and that

This is the beginning of another project using some of This and That. Not a good picture, looks like I must have moved when I click the shutter, it's blurry; but there will be other pictures. As you can see these squares are all different sizes, but I believe with edging and altering the sizes of some of these squares and rectangles I'll be able to make a ghan that's like life............pieced together. Some of these are crocheted, some are knitted. There's a mix of yarn, but similar in weight. I no longer remember where all have come from as I've gotten items when groups have closed down as well as from individuals. I do know several of these were knitted by my Darling Daughter, several came from our good friend Sandie and her daughter Kate, a couple are from Alma, and I crocheted a couple.

I believe with a good size border this will end up being an appropriate size to send to our friends at Pine Street. In addition, I am still working on the knitted corner to corner ghan. Homelessness is a huge problem so encouraging folks who were homeless is a worthy cause.

Please keep your knitting needles and crochet hooks busy throughout this summer making hats, scarves and mittens for our Bridge and Beyond, cold weather will be here before we know it and each year the need grows.

Starts of this and that

Our good friend Sandie teaches crochet and often needs to make a little of this and that to demonstrate a stitch, a shape, a technique. I'm going to use some of this donation along with some odds and ends from my daughter, and squares from Alma to put together a ghan or two that I hope will work out appropriately for The Pine Street Project. No formulated plan yet, need to ruminate a bit; but will keep you all posted.

A Rainbow of Scarves

DARLING! Look at these adorable fleece kid friendly scarves Chris sent. A cowboy print, a horse print and fun polka dots. These will naturally go to young children at the free clinic and I know will be a big hit. And kitties too!
This truly is a rainbow of scarves. Look at all the fabulous colors. Chris and a friend of her's at work sent this fabulous box of 17 crocheted scarves, 5 fleece scarves, and a cute hat-scarf-glove set. WOW! Chris doesn't have a blog for you all to visit, but you might remember she's a friend of our Dear Beth--you know crochetprincess. This is a perfect example of our reaching out. Chris found us through Beth and Chris has also spread the word by getting help from a co-worker. Thanks to all who knit, to all who crochet, to all who sew fleece, to all who blog about us, and to all who talk about the need we're able to get more helping hands. More helping hands means we're able to help more folks, to provide warmth to more cold homeless and those in need.

Helping the Homeless with Socks and Stitches

YIPPEE, look at this very cool hat and socks. Thanks so much Shelly. The hat is knit and feels like it's double yarn or very nice thick yarn. It's a great man size and will really help ward off the cold for one of homeless men living under the bridge.

I'm like a kid at Christmas when I open these marvelous packages you all continue to send. It's truly heartwarming to know so many of you care so much about your fellow man.

You are all THE BEST! Keep up the good work.

SOCKS, socks, SOCKS

I am Thrilled! Truly thrilled and have already passed along these 25 pairs of socks from Bunny. Thank you so much Bunny. Socks are needed regardless of the temperatures and conditions. The men are always extremely happy to get socks, so I zipped over quickly yesterday to pass these along to Jan, my SIL; who'll pass them to Dear Rae today. No time wasted here for sure ladies.

I've continued to work on the corner to corner ghan, and squares for Pine Street, as well as a scarf and hope you're all busy too.

We are so blessed to have a roof over our heads, food on our plates it's wonderful to be able to share as we do to help the homeless. I thank you all for your continued support.

We've got a bit over a week left of June, Sock it to me Month; but that doesn't mean socks can't be donated other times.

Helping the Homeless is a year long Quest

Beautiful, beautiful. Look what Linda in sunny Florida sent us~ She and her knitting needles have been very busy playing together. 3 hats, can you believe how cute the red pinky one in the lower right is......or the scarlet and gray with earflaps that Stella's showing off. Toooooooo cute for sure. 3 pair of mittens, red, green, and a cool variegated pair; and a neat neck gator AND an awesome multi-colored scarf. These beauties were all knitted with nice soft warm yummy yarn. Thank you bunches Linda!

Folks the weather here is finally warm, or at least it is most days; though we've continued to have some nasty cool wet nights which always causes me to look ahead, plan ahead for a few months down the road. Let's keep those hooks and needles flying so when the unpredictable central Ohio weather turns we'll be ready and people won't go cold. We do continue to knit, crochet, loom and collect all year long.

Remember June is Sock it to Me Month. If you can, we'd love to collect some socks for the men. White or dark colors. I buy in bulk when I see a good sale. If you can send socks great; if you'd prefer to save on postage and send money towards socks that too is good. Socks for wet feet are needed all year long.

June is, Sock it to me Month

We all continue to knit and crochet even during the warm months as hats, mittens, and scarves can then be stock piled to be ready as soon as frost hits. Frost can hit pretty quickly and unexpectedly here in Central Ohio; so please keep those hands busy.

In addition, I'm officially kicking off a drive for socks. White or colored, socks one size fits all are needed. Let's focus on men's socks as that's the bulk of those living under the bridges, and elsewhere at the moment.

Store bought socks. I buy in bulk which is much more cost effective. PLEASE socks are something even our non knitters and crocheters can help with. Contact me for my mailing address if you feel you can help out by sending a package of socks. Several people have pointed out it's more cost effective for them to forward a check vs paying the cost of mailing socks. That's been done several times and I take the check and head to Kohl's, Sams, or Target...whomever is offering the best deal at the time. I can happily buy the socks here and save you all the postage costs.

Help by buying socks, or by sending a check. Help by telling your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and fellow bloggers about the need. While socks are needed all year long, we'll make June our special "Sock it to me month".

Warming heads, hands, and Hearts

These beautiful red and purple mitten and hat sets are from Bunny's fabulous knitting needles. Please click to see picture larger so you can see the beautiful pattern of the stitches in the hats. Stella had a hard time decided which color to model when I told her she could only put one on. You know how temperamental she can be. Both the hats and the mittens have a nice stretch to them. Below you see my hand along side the red mitten. These darling sets will fit a teen or a women about my size. I love the mitten pattern. No DP's are needed. Thanks Bunny for forwarding a copy of the pattern so I can try my hand at it.
I've asked permission to post this pattern on our page, and James the designer of this pattern (PandaMan) has gracious said yes. Clapping my Hands for Mittens!!

Look at these fabulous, cool colored crocheted mittens. Love them and their sooooooo warm. Thanks bunches Jodi. Mittens is something we never quite get enough of so am thrilled to have these. AND she tells me she's already working on more. YIPPEE!!

It does occur to me, that perhaps I need to try my hand (pun intended) at this again. I've made them in the past; but didn't find them all that easy to do. However, with the weather getting warmer this is something you wouldn't have to have on your lap making you warmer. Hint...hint folks. Making mittens in the spring and summer for fall and winter use. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Thanks bunches Alma. I've continued to work on my knitted corner to corner ghan for the same cause (Pine Street), and have crocheted a couple of granny squares at work this week during lunch.

**A word of caution, if you're making squares for Pine Street measure them carefully. They need to be 9 inches to be used. Always be sure and measure both directions. Sometimes I can get my granny squares right on; sometimes not. The couple I made this week at work came out a wee short of 9 inches, so added a sc edge all around and then they measured correctly.

The Faces of Homeless

There are many faces of homelessness. Some are women, some are men, some are children, and some are Veterans. They're in my city, and yours and the country sides too. The numbers may vary from local to local; but the problem exists everywhere across our great land. We don't know there faces, we don't know their names. We see them and want to avert our eyes. In some cases we may be afraid. Perhaps they are too. Afraid of another cold lonely night without a roof over their heads, afraid of another cold lonely night without food, afraid of another cold lonely night when they might have to be on the run or hide or try and protect what little they do have. Yes, I think they too have fear.

According to statastics, there are some 12,000 homeless on any given night in my state of Ohio alone. Of that 12,000 about 1,500 of them go un-sheltered. Like this man in the above picture finding rest in the middle of what appears to be a sidewalk or parking lots. No doubt some heat might exists in the concrete to help warm him.

In Ohio, The FMR (fair market rent) for a 2 bedroom apartment is $683.00. Rule of thumb is one shouldn't spend more than 30% of ones income on housing. To afford an apartment that cost $683.00 (FMR) using the 30% rule a person would need an income of $27,326.00 annually. That annual figure breaks out to $13.14 an hour given a 40 hour work week. The minimum hourly rate in Ohio is $7.30. Given the state's current minimum that worker would need to work 72 hours a week to afford the 2 bedroom apartment. You can quickly see from those stats compiled by localities and the federal government; why so many are homeless. Think of the people you know, how many make the $13.14 an hour and work a steady 40 hour work week. AND, how many do you know who's rent is well above the $683.00 (FMR)?

Please help where you can. We have many ways to help. Our primary goal has always been hats, mittens, and scarves. Those items can be knitted or crocheted and we do collect them all year long. Yes even in the hot months of July and August. We want to be prepared with a ready supply as soon as the first frost hits. In addition we always need store bought socks. Socks are needed during all 4 season. Can you buy a bag? I've added a badge here for Pine Street (click on side panel to read more about it), they are in need of 9 inch squares. Those squares can be knitted or crocheted. Please measure your squares twice. You can forward directly or send along to me with your other donations and I'll mail in bulk.

I wonder who's son, brother, uncle, husband or father the man is the picture is. The face of homelessness is sad.

**Please see suggestion made in comment by Sandie, I think it's a good one. I can buy socks in bulk and if folks want to send along a little something with their regular donations it wouldn't add to the cost of mailing.

Scarves from Sandie's Hook

LOVE this yarn. Sandie's used this colorway before and it's really cool how no two things come out the same with the way the color fades in and out. Pretty earthy browns and tans, with shades of blue. Both super soft, nice and heavy and large enough for the men under the bridge.

As always Sandie's work is beautiful and I truly appreciate her on going support of this charity. Though you know if you ventured to her page, this is by no means the only charity she supports. She's always busy with hook and yarn. Sometimes I wonder if she crochet's in her sleep. lol Seriously, she's made so many things through the years and her support never wavers.

Yarn and needles on the go

Making headway with the corner to corner ghan for Pine Street. Decided to take with me on my travels after all. I worked on it during the flight here, and off and on here; but probably will pack in the suitcase for the return flight as it will be a bit too large to be comfortable to work with on the plane. I've got some other yarn and crochet hook with me for something smaller for the return flight.

Since last posting I've added the dark red strip, the multi-stripe, bright lime green, grey, orange, and the nobby blue. All but the blue are left over in my stash from previous projects, while the nobby blue is from Bunny's recent donation.

Hope you're all busy with yarn and crochet hooks and or knitting needles making hats, scarves, and mittens for our on going efforts here for the homeless connected to The Bridge and Beyond; and remember if you're making squares for Pine Street you can send directly or send along to me with your other donations and I'll forward in one large mailing. Homelessness is a problem in far too many cities and each and every stitch you make does indeed make a difference. Each and every stitch helps keep someone warmer, can in fact make the difference is whether or not they stay alive; particularly in the extreme conditions. No effort is too little, no effort is unneeded or un-appreciated. Even as it's almost summer here in central Ohio I'm asking you to continue your efforts for those less fortunate, those homeless folks without a roof over their heads.

Corner to Corner Ghan

Making headway on my corner to corner ghan for Pine Street. Though I don't believe it will travel that well since I'm using a bit of this and a bit of that; so probably won't take it with me on vacation. Will work on scarves probably instead. Easier to pack.

But, wanted to share the progress and whom all is represented here. Previous picture showed the first 3 colors (tan, red, and blue texture Rae's mother, my stash, Bunny's donation). The purple was given to me by Lydia when I helped her with family genealogy, the blue my stash, the rose from Tony a previous co-worker, multi-color from Bunny, and back to the tan from Rae's Mother.

Kinda fun trying to remember where all the yarn came from as I knit. It's like we're all sitting together.

Warm beautiful crocheted scarves! Karen V made the tan one with the design, the beautiful dark green, and the pretty pastel scarf. The multi-colored scarf top left and dark blue varigated scarf were made by someone in her sorority. A while back Karen and her group made a decision to help our cause and even those in her group who don't knit or crochet have purchased yarn to give those who who do knit and crochet. I love how things become a team effort. Together, I believe we can accomplish many things.

Many hands make the work lighter, and more enjoyable.

Socks

It's been awhile since I've posted about socks, so since I've gotten a few questions regarding socks thought it must be time for me to discuss socks. Socks are always needed, all 12 months of the year. When one lives outside in the elements, having dry feet can be quite a challenge. Even when it's not frigid, wet feet are uncomfortable. Having clean dry socks to change into can be such a blessing. Some of the folks living under the bridges might have opportunities to wash their socks; but even then getting them dry to put on again can be difficult.

When I've purchased socks I've gotten the bulk packs at Target, Sams, and Kohl's. If gotten white and dark colors. If you're busy and tight for time to knit or crochet; you can still lend a hand. Please consider donating a package of socks. They really are very appreciated.

For the Kids

Thank you James, what a wonderful donation this is. I always admire your knitting skills. The sweater and hat set are going to make someone really really happy. I love the two sided hat. Did you knit that in the round, changing color half way through and decrease both ends? I'm trying to visualize the method.

And the blue and green hat with the design....oh if someday I could knit that like that! These are going to the clinic for the kids, thank you for your ongoing support and thoughtful donation.

Stripes of this and that on the needles

I don't usually photograph and show you something in the works; but felt I would this time for several reason. Firstly, this is the start of a afghan which is being knitted with odds and ends; many of which are left over's or donated from lots of wonderful people. Ok, that's not particularly news worthy, we all often use our stash, our odd's and ends. However, this is a little different because it will be a ghan; not a hat, not a pair of mittens, and not a scarf. It is though still an item to be used for charity..........AND it is still an homeless charity at that.

I wanted to tell you all about this charity; not to have you stop making hats, mittens, and scarves. PLEASE KEEP THOSE COMING. But, because I've just added an additional badge to this blog (or did a few days ago), and wondered if you all had seen it? It's a poster I've always LOVED. Rosie The Riveter. The spirit of that poster always makes me think what fabulous things women did when The Men were off fighting World War II. But, I'm getting off track and there's quite a story there.

If you click on the Badge you will be taken to their webpage, Pine Street. They take care of folks on the street, like we do; but they also house homeless. They get some folks off the street and when they get a place to live are given a house warming gift of a hand made afghan. The ghans are knitted and crocheted from 9 inch squares that are put together specifically for these folks to encourage them to continue to stay off the streets. It's a wonderful program worthy of our support. When you have yarn left after making hats, scarves, mittens etc...why not make a square or two?

This can be done individually, or if you like you can send your squares to me and I'll mail in mass as our group donation. Let me know your thoughts, and please take a minute to review their webpage.

Now a wee bit of history on this diagonal ghan I've started. The tan is from Rae's mother donation, the red from my stash, and the blue textured yarn is the same yarn I used to make a scarf with the yarn donation from Bunny. So, as I continue to work on this ghan, I'll continue to let you know how it progresses, and what each strip represents.

Let's start at the very beginning

Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start, when you sing you begin with ....

Sing along, sing loud, and sing proud!

Now, since we're talking about beginnings, did you know when-where-or why scarves were first used?

I didn't, but this what I found out. Sudarium is the Latin word for sweat cloth. Back in Roman days Men used small linen clothes to wipe the sweat from their faces. The quality of the cloth denoted the man's station in life. Shortly thereafter they were worn as a fashion statement; by Men. They became more decorative.

The French really took hold and called them cravats, from the Crotian word Kravata. The French wore them around the neck, around the writs, around the waste. Soon they were made of all different sorts of fibers. Ultimately the women got involved, and the wearing of a scarf was a symbol of class and style.

The warmest scarves are made of wool, a natural fiber that breathes allowing the sweat to flow out and the warmth to remain.

The scarf has surely come a long way. Now, yes it's stylish; but wrapping it around one's throat, mouth and shoulders wards off the nasty elements and can make a difference in life of a cold, hungry homeless man, women, or child.

Teaming it up, Thanks to Bunny

This is the first of items made from Bunny's yarn donation. I knitted this lengthwise with 2 strands of Bernat Illusions and size 19 knitting needles. I often don't add fringe to scarves; but felt this one needed it. The scarf is thick and spongy with lots of texture. I like the end result with the texture; though it is a bit difficult to work with. The texture makes it sorta grabby and therefore it doesn't slid easily on the needles. Knitting it lengthwise I think shows the yarns texture well.

And so...........this is what I call teaming it up. Bunny provided the yarn, and I made the scarf. Together I believe people can do almost anything.

Together you, you, and YOU make an unbeatable Team. Give yourself a high five and keep up the good work team. Let's get warmed up with a few stretches before we grab our gear.

The Smurfs would say Scarfin it up

The Smurfs and Gail B have something in common, they're scarfin it up! Look at this beautiful collection of crocheted scarves. Some are made with single crochet, some with double crochet, and I think a couple of half double crochet. Different colors, different lengths and widths to cover a variety of sizes/ages of those homeless they will keep warm.

Click on the picture to enlarge, I really LOVE the unusual colored pinkish-gold one. It has such a nice texture to it. Is it two strands of yarn Gail? Or is that the type of yarn? Very cool!

**stay turned, the first round of Bunny's yarn has been used.

Doubled it up, Darling Daughter

Double yarn, the Lion Brand Homespun (black) is from the donated yarn from my Darling Daughter. This scarf is the 3rd one I've knitted from the yarn she donated. The blue, mauve-rust, purple, and tanish yarns all from my stash are knitted worsted yarn. Some I had on hand and some donated by Rae's Mother. The center is the blue, though I think that's hard to see in the picture. I used size 13 knitting needles since I was using the two strands of yarn. It's super thick and should be nice and warm to help keep a homeless person warmer.

Though we do now have spring flowers growing and trees blooming here in Central Ohio, the homeless are indeed still cold and in need. I'm sitting here in the house with a fleece on; so you can imagine how cold they are outside without a roof over their heads. We still have frost most nights, and lots of dampness along with strong winds. It will probably be 2 more months before they aren't in need of warm items to help protect them from the elements. So, PLEASE keep those hands busy with hooks, needles, and looms.

And remember, we collect items all year long, all 12 months of the year.

I've been asked Why?

I've been asked Why? I've been asked why knit and crochet and give away my hard work? Why spend time organizing others to do the same. I've been asked why not sell your stuff and make money?

No doubt, if you're reading this you've been asked that too, a time or two. The answers may vary a bit for all of us. But, the biggest why is because I can. To elaborate-- I'm blessed enough to be able to, and therefore I should. I've been given the talent to do things with my hands; and so am giving back what I can. I'm lucky enough to have a roof over my head, a job, food to eat, and loved ones who care for me. Yes I still make a few things for my family and myself; but so many others need so much more. Maybe I'm selfish, because I think I gain as much when I give as those who are at the receiving end. It does make me feel good.

I give, because I can.

images like this pull at my heart strings. Images like this bother me. This women is someone's daughter, someone's sister, someone's, cousin, perhaps someone's wife. This wee babe, needs a fighting chance.

Manly Scarf 2

I seemed to have lost the picture I took when this scarf was completed and it's already been passed along, so here it is when it was still on the needles. This is the 2nd black scarf from the yarn Darling Daughter gave (Homespun). It's a bit wider then the first scarf; and will probably be just a bit shorter as a result. Trying to do one skein scarf.

Better than an Easter Egg Hunt, warming the homeless!

No surprises here look at these hats and scarves crocheted by Sandie. The 2 ton green and black scarf is doubled..crocheted with 2 strans of yarn for extra warmth. Great colors and sizes. Everyday is like Christmas here when I open beautiful hats, scarves, and mittens from you all. Thank you, thank you Sandie as always we're lucky to have you help our cause.

Hey Knitters

For the knitters among us who want to try their hand at crochet, here's a very basic beginning. Everything in crochet is started with a chain stitch, so I found this video in case you want to give it a try. I found several actually; but many don't show and explain as well as I believe this one does.

Let me know if you want to give this a try. Next time I'll post the next step in crocheting which is the single crochet. The single crochet can be helpful to make an edge on anything you knit, regardless if you're knitting for yourself or for the homeless.
