Crocheted Hats from Louisiana Warm Those in Need in Ohio

Thank you Sandie P for your thoughful donation of 3 crocheted hats, and for your long term and on going support of Bridge and Beyond.  The hats are navy, not purple, but sometimes those two colors just don't show up right in photo's...I've never known why, they just don't, at least not for me.  Sandie hails from the warm state of Louisiana, where she's often enjoying sunshine as she thinks about those in cold Ohio in need of help.  I think that's pretty special.  It's so easy when we're comfortable to forget others aren't.

Many thanks Sandie, please keep up the good work.  And a second thank you for tagging your hats with size, much appreciated.

**Folks remember darker solids work best for men, women, and children.  Solids often blend in better, and show less dirt then pastels, and bright colors who have limited ability if any to do laundry.  Those living out in the elements really prefer the dark solids, as they don't like to call attention to themselves in bold, or bright colors and designs.**

Donating Crocheted Cotton Washcloths

Pretty, and bright, and cheery.  Look at this neat collection of cotton washcloths from our long time supporter, Sandie P from Louisiana.  Lots of variety in colors, sizes, and styles.  If I had to pick a favorite it might be a toss up between the pink and blue and or the yellow and green.  Remember you can always click on the picture to enlarge so you can see details better.  Interesting stitches, Sandie.  Care to tell us how you did that?  AND, look at the little blue one on the far right bottom.  I put it there, sorta by it'self so you all could see it.  It's double.  Wondering if there's a name for this pod like design?
Here it is where tugged a bit at the 2 sides so you could see what I mean.  I bet that would make a great scrubby for the tub and or doing dishes.

Thank you Sandie, come again....soon.

**Got a challenge for you all, do you know a quilter?  Please invite a quilter from your personal life, from your blog mates, from facebook, Ravelry, Crochetville etc. to come join us and use their quilting skills to make a quilt for project Welcome Home, and or quilted scarves.**

Why Sandie from Louisiana Donates

A few days ago I talked about why I donate, or at least some of the reasons. I also asked if others would share their stories, their reasons. Yesterday I posted a beautiful post from Wendy H. Today, I'm pasting the comment our good friend Sandie from Louisiana made on that first post. She sells herself short. Any of you who know Sandie, have seen her work; certainly know that to be true. Sandie's lists of charities is huge, changed perhaps over time; but she's touched a good many people. She says all she knows how to do is crochet....that's HUGE Sandie. It's a skill, a talent, a gift given to you that you've passed onto others. Your hands are skillful, and I know your heart to be wide open with caring.

Some of you may know how Sandie P from Louisiana and I got to know each other, some may not know. Because of Katrina, she'd been involved in a group that made squares and joined them together to make afghans for those who were so horrible effect. Squares 4 Survivors was the name of the group. I found her through a thread on Crochetville. I helped both with squares and with joining afghans and from there, we've each continued our love of helping others. We've stayed connected through blogging, more recently through Facebook and are also connected on Pinterest....though I've only just joined and am clueless about what I'm doing there.

Here then is Sandie's comment.

Truthfully I cannot remember when I began donating to charity efforts. It's been quite a while. When I first learned to crochet, I made afghan after afghan for my family. That was all I knew how to make. Then they had enough afghans. I did a few things for my home when I got married.

I had two preemie babies so that was my first charity focus, then I had so many family members who suffered with cancer so another focus added, then Katrina and the needs there, then my son went into Army and I focused on the military, and my Dad and two aunts had Alzheimer so.... you see how it goes. There is always a cause to aide and the only thing I know how to do is crochet! LOL

Donation from The Pelican State

Thank you long time supporter, Sandie P from Louisiana for these crocheted cotton washcloths. Cotton washcloths are always appreciated at all 3 shelters. Sandie hails from Louisiana, a state with many nicknames. I've read Louisiana has more nicknames then most kids do. Apparently back in 1872 is known as The Creole State; but those folks in northern Louisiana took exception to this name. They thought it meant African Blood, obviously there was a misunderstanding. It's been known as The Bayou State, The Pelican State, and Tha Durrty Boot, The child of Mississippi. The longest standing nickname though is The Pelican State, and The Pelican is in fact the state bird. Although, many locals prefer calling it, The Sportsman's Paradise due to the abundance of good fishing and hunting.

Whatever it's nickname, we're thrilled to have your on going support Sandie. Keep up the good work.

Nice Warm Hats for Homeless

Thank you Sandie in Louisiana once again. These hats are crocheted from the pattern Sandie has on her blog. As you can see they are sized nicely for men, nice thick, warm. Please check out her Pattern HERE and on the hat tab across the top of the blog. I love the nice brim for added warmth across ones ears.......plus, it can be pulled down if need be making the hat cover some more cold areas.

Great colors, and as always so nicely made. Many thanks Sandie! Keep up the good work.

Donating warmth and Hope for those in Need

Thank you Sandie in Louisiana for your crocheted scarf, 2 hats, and pair of wrist warmers (fingerless mitts). I keep seeing the fingerless/writs warmer words being used interchangeably. I really don't know if one is more correct. Sandie's work is always so nicely made. You might or might know she took a Master's Class and has taught crochet. AND, she's a published author. She's a mother and a wife..........a very busy lady with a big heart. She's been with us from the beginning and I'm always so appreciative of her donations and her friendship.

Sandie's has patterns on her page and while these hats aren't exactly the ones made from the pattern I have posted here under the hat tab, they are very close. Check it out. Thanks Sandie

Give a Square, Thank You Sandie

16 crocheted squares from our very good friend and long time supporter, Sandie in Louisiana. These wonderful purple, lavendar, pink, dusty rose squares will find their way into an afghan for our Project Welcome Home to benefit The Homeless Families Foundation. They may be group with other squares, they may be used on their own....I'm needing to check the stash of squares I have on hand to decide.

This is a perfect December 1st blog post, as it kicks off our month long focus on squares. Squares knitted and or crocheted are joined to make afghans that are donated to The Homeless Families Foundation as house warming gifts when they transition from their temporary shelter housing to more permanent housing. Squares will be collected for the month of December, then put on hold until. I prefer not to collect squares all year long, but I will periodically call for them to be mailed again. So, don't worry if you run into a time crunch during the busy month of December. I like to hold on squares to control how many I have on hand to join.

2011 Donations:

Squares 551+16=567
Rain Ponchos 208
Cotton Washcloths 338
Sweaters/Poncho's 10
Slippers 100
Afghans 44 (2 sent to our friends at Pine Street)
Misc Items I've not counted misc items like all the personal care items, the neck warmers, head bands, shawl, hot packs, or yarn etc.

Squares should be made of washable yarn, be no smaller then 7 inches or larger then 10 inches. Please avoid using solid white. Do not knot and cut when changing yarn, please leave appropriate tails of several inches when changing yarn and work all ends into your work, except the final tail. Leave a tail of at least 5 inches on the final tail. Any questions, please leave them in the comments and or email me.

*****Please avoid open and lacy stitches when making hats, scarves and slippers. If you can see your hand through the item, and or poke your finger through...it's too lacy and not warm enough. *****

Wrap up in a Crocheted Scarf

crocheted scarf Wrap up in this crocheted scarf from our long time supporter and friend Sandie from Louisiana. Sandie's work is always so well done. This scarf is both warm and soft. Many thanks Sandie, please keep up the good work.

This is day 12 folks in our month long focus on men and their needs. Have you read about my friend Jack Otis? If not, please do. Do you have a story you can share about homelessness?

I'm going to share a 2nd story with you about another high school friend who was educated, successful in several areas including owning his own business. A horrific car accident changed all that. After one uses up insurance, short and or long disability, and no longer has a job nothing remains the same. He had brain damage, making further employment a problem. He was a heartbeat away from being homeless. A good friend took him in and gave him lodging. That gave him time to get back on his feet enough not to be homeless. He has never regained his former level of success or employment. A car accident, something that could happen to anyone of us.

When you see a homeless person on the street, please think about what you might do to help. Please don't look away, as if you don't see. That person has a face, and that person is or was someone's loved one. You don't know what their personal story is, you don't know what brought them to this point in their life.

Homelessness does indeed have a face. Please keep your hooks and needles busy and do what you can to help those less fortunate. They are someone's son, daughter, Mother, Father, Aunt, Uncle, friend, or former classmate. Just like my friends Jack and Bill.

Sandie's Super Soft Set Donated

scarf and hat setAwesome brown crocheted set here from our long time friend Sandie in Louisiana. I love the color, I love that it's big enough for the men folk, and I love how super soft it is. As we're fast approaching the month of November which will be Jack Otis Memorial Month and a focus on our Men...this is most timely.

When people ask me why I take time to knit/crochet? This is what I tell them. You've probably heard me say it before, but I continue to get the question....no doubt you do too.
The message behind a hand made item, be it knitted, crocheted or loomed is powerful. The message that someone you didn't know took time to make something especially for you is awesome, is powerful, is important. That's why we donated hand made items. We keep them physical warm...yes; but we offer hope because of the specialness with a hand made item. Thank you for all you do. Keep up the good work folks.

Team Work

misc. crocheted itemsThis is a donation of possibilities from Sandie in LA. I say possibilities because Sandie and I often collaborate and work as a team. She sometimes has what she terms are odds and ends, starts, examples perhaps from teaching a crochet class. She knows I'm a bit crazy and put things together. In an effort to clean out a space for son, some things had to leave their craft room. Above are 2 hats, possible 2 scarves and 4 stripes, or 4 stripes. I might want to use those fun stripes scarves/stripes to mix with squares....thinking stages here. The black I think will work folded over as a cowl, and there's a pretty blue square.

For tabulation purposes I'm counting it this way 2 hats, 2 scarves, 1 neck warm/cowl, 4 stripes, and 1 square.

Stupendous Scarves from Sandie

crocheted scarvesHere's 2 lovely, soft, and warm scarves crocheted and donated by our long time friend and supporter, Sandie (the one in Louisiana...remember we have multiple Sandie's). Look at the fun stripes with such a good color combination on the left. That scarf was crocheted lengthwise, while the pretty purple one next to it was crocheted width wise.

Sandie's work is always top notch! Many thanks Sandie for your on going support, it's greatly appreciated.

Crocheted Cotton Cloth

cotton crocheted washclothA crocheted cotton cloth from our good friend, and long time supporter, Sandie in Louisiana (also the winner of our JoAnne gift card for the comment contest). Cotton washcloths are such an awesome thing, for several reasons. They are a necessary item, everyone needs a washcloth...plus they're handmade which shows someone you didn't know cared enough to take time to make something special...special, JUST FOR YOU, plus hand made cotton wash cloths are so very soft and feel so nice on our skin and that gives wonderful comfort to all.

We supply personal items too and our last donation to Faith Mission was fabulous folks. Hand made cotton wash cloths, both knitted and crocheted, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and rinse, lotion and razors. I was so pleased with our donations both for our men living under the bridges and for the folks at Faith Mission (both sides men and women). Thank you to all who participated. I say this often, but it bears repeating again. Every item is appreciated. Maybe you think I only have one of this or that....put with others it grows and grows and gives us the ability to help many in need. Please don't be timid and believe me when I say YOU DO MAKE a difference. One item, one stitch at a time.

July's focus is squares 7-10 inches, more details can be found in the side bar and or tab on the top of the blog.

Help from the state of Louisiana

crocheted scarfLong time supporter, and awesome crocheter, Sandie has crocheted and donated another awesome scarf for the homeless in need here in Ohio. Thank you much! Sandie's work is always very nice and I admire her long term dedication not to just this worthy cause; but others too.

This came during our May focus on scarves, so how perfect is that!

As you may already know, this is now June and we're focusing this month on cotton washcloths. Knitted and crocheted cotton washcloths for Men, Women, and Children. These cloths will be delivered to Faith Mission (both sides Nancy Place for the women and children, and the mens night by night shelter side), as well as our Men under The Bridges.

Interesting to note how our timing happens to match well with a request for washcloths and personal care items from Faith Mission. Just 2 days ago I received a notice on facebook that Faith Mission was extremely low and in need of personal care items.

June is a perfect time for these needed small projects, so please toss your hooks and or needles into your purse and or briefcase so you can do a row here and there. Please consider helping us spread the word by blogging about the need, talking to your friends-neighbors and family. Post on Rav forums, Facebook, and Tweet.

100% Cotton or a nice cotton blend; but please refrain from acrylic only. Thank you for all the work and support you all provide.

Scrumptious Scarves by Sandie, Sweet and Warm

crocheted scarvesSandie (in Louisiana) is a long time supporting of our cause of helping the homeless here in Central Ohio. Sandie's work is always very well done and always interesting. Look at these wonderful scarves. She has some that are manly, and some that are sweet. They are all scrumptious. They are all nice and heavy, non lacy open stitches so super warm. Hum, how many S's can I use? Super Scrumptious Sweet Scarves by Sandie? lol Ok, my mind is tripping out or something.

Kidding aside, many thanks Sandie for your thoughtful donation, and for your long term support of our homeless so much in need here in Cold Central Ohio.

This is Sock it to Me Month. Have you read about it? Please check the sidebar for details. This is day 11 of the project.

Hats, Beanies, Taboggan so many words

crocheted hatsThere are so many words one can use when talking about a hat. Here's just a few: Hat, cap, beanie, beret, bonnet, cloche, fedora, skull cap, sombrero, tam, and toboggan. Toboggan can be confusing, as many think of a sled rather than a hat. Depends, I believe what part of the country you're from. But, whatever you call it; hats are awesome to aid the homeless in keeping warm. And, whatever your word choice is these hats from our good friend Sandie in Louisiana are awesome as always. Her work is always so well done. These 2 crocheted hats are nice and warm and large enough for adults. I know they will make 2 more people warmer, and glad to be wearing a hat, cap, beanie, toboggan, beret, bonnet, cloche, fedora, skull cap, sombrero/tam.

Many thanks Sandie for your on going support, it is greatly appreciated.

Photo's taken and blog posts written and in que for donations from: Sandy (me), Eve, Phyllis, Stephanie, Trudy, Cecile, and Amy. Please check back and enjoy the pictures of their lovely donations.

Squares serve so many

crocheted squares
More squares to add to the designing fun I've been having for our Mothers and children at Faith Mission. Thank you Sandie in Louisiana for your crocheted squares. They will be put to good use and are very much appreciated.

We'll be collecting squares for 11 more days (until Jan 31st), for our "Give a Square" program. As of the writing of this post (as you know all are scheduled ahead), we have quite a few designed and ready for me to assemble. Remember Give a Square won't go away never to return. It will be dormat for awhile until such time I feel like we need to make more ghans; so please if you like making squares, keep doing so. If you like to make a square or two when you finish other projects with the left over yarn; continue to do that and put them aside. I will be posting another time for you to mail them in. This method I believe keeps things at a manageable level.

Always fun to see new Scarves for our Homeless

crocheted scarfWhy doesn't purple show up well in pictures on blogs? I know I've seen Sandie blog about something purple not showing up as to what color or shade it really is. Puzzling. At any rate, this is not a black and white scarf; but a purple (dark purple) and white scarf crocheted by Sandie (in Louisiana). We've got several Sandie's (with ie's) now so I'll try to differentiate.

I have no clue what stitch this is and hope Sandie's pop's in to tell us. It's quite interesting. I resembles those mile a minute styles with the curved edge and worked lengthwise vs widthwise; but other than that...I'm clueless.

I can tell you I like it, and like all Sandie's items is very well made; but what it is...a mystery.

Many thanks as always Sandie for your on going fabulous support. It is so very much appreciated.

Starts of this and that

this and that and yarnOur good friend Sandie teaches crochet and often needs to make a little of this and that to demonstrate a stitch, a shape, a technique. I'm going to use some of this donation along with some odds and ends from my daughter, and squares from Alma to put together a ghan or two that I hope will work out appropriately for The Pine Street Project. No formulated plan yet, need to ruminate a bit; but will keep you all posted.

Thanks Sandie for the donations of yarn as well.

And, PLEASE take a minute register and vote to help homeless financially, with housing etc; even if you personally don't have the means to write a check.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
