Personal Care, Cotton Washcloths and Socks Donated for Homeless

This awesome donation is from a very good friend Marjorie M.  Look at all the cotton washcloths!  There's such a nice mix of colors,  many I've not seen before.  Love the orange mix!  Besides being busy crocheting lots of cotton washcloths, Marjorie has been busy collecting lots of personal care items, including feminine hygiene products which is wonderful.  She's also included socks which are a hit all year long and always needed!

Many thanks Marjorie, please keep up the good work.  Folks Marjorie donated this some time back, but the picture got in the wrong folder on my computer and I came across it the other day realized I hadn't yet shared it with you...at least pretty sure I hadn't.

Donations Especially for the Ladies

Look at this wonderful donation from our good friend Marjorie M from Minnesota!  Loads of wonderful cotton washcloths, crocheted in lots of different colors, personal items geared towards the ladies.  AND see the pretty flowered gift boxes...look to the right and you'll see one opened up...it's an awesome insulated bag which will come in quite handy for the ladies on the streets.  Below is a close up of how the nice bag zips up.  I love these and will keep my eyes open for others.
Until recently, when I read an article indicating female supplies are in short supply at shelters I hadn't thought about how important having tampons and pads were and how demoralizing it must be for the ladies not to have clean items to change into during that time.  Thank you Marjorie for including those items in your personal care items.

As always, please keep up the good work.

Warming Homeless Feet with this Donation

Thank you Marjorie M for this thoughtful donation of crocheted cotton washcloths and socks.  It's awesome!  Cold, wet feet are very dangerous.  Having clean dry socks can improve health factors many time over for our cold homeless friends.  Even for those lucky enough to get a night here and there in a shelter, the ability to wash socks or dry wet socks is not a given; so having a supply of clean dry warm socks is greatly appreciated.

Love the soft cotton washcloths, they have many uses for those living out in the elements, those living in shelters, as well as those transitioning to permanent housing.  They are used as washcloths and as dishcloths.  Excellant!

Many thank Marjorie for your on going support.  Keep up the good work.

Crocheting for the Homeless

Thank you Marjorie M for this awesome donation and for your on going support of the cause here on Bridge and Beyond.  Marjorie has been a faithful supporter for Ohio's homeless and others in need in many ways.  She uses her skillful hands to crochet and donate warm items, she includes lots of much needed and appreciated personal care items.  Additionally she is ever diligent in visiting and supporting the blog with her thoughtful comments and cheering on other big hearted folks who donate.
Lots of different colored crocheted cotton washcloths, some for the ladies and some for the men.  Perfect!  She's also included warm socks so very much in need.
I attended the Ohio State Footfall game the other day, and can tell you how uncomfortable I was with cold wet feet.  We were out for a good part of the day and feet simply don't dry when it's raining....even though we had rain gear on that doesn't protect ones feet.  Knowing I could get warm and dry later certainly helped.  Our friends living out in the elements don't have the luxury of knowing in a few hours they'll be warm and dry, so socks are ALWAYS a huge plus.

Many thanks Marjorie, please keep up the good work.

*Folks if you notice I rolled the brim down on one hat and up in the other so you can see the versatility of this style hat.*

**Posted a donation yesterday from a Carol C, whom I still very much need to be in contact with, please if you know this person, or are this person and are reading this blog, make contact with me with the contact form in the right side bar, or a comment here on the blog, or a comment in the group on facebook, and or my personal facebook page.  I've tried for a couple of weeks to make contact, but need your email.**

Warm Dry Feet Important for Homeless

Thank you Marjorie M for this thoughtful donation and your continued support of Bridge and Beyond.  Marjorie had donated personal care items which are needed both by the folks living in the elements and by the folks entering shelters, as often they have nothing when they get there.  And warm, dry, feet is HUGE!  Having warm dry feet is important all year long, in every season, and is often a key element in keeping someone healthy and more.......ALIVE in colder wetter months.

Thank you Marjorie for your generous and kind donation and your caring heart!

**Folks please remember not to knot and cut with knitted or crocheted items.  Knots are always the weakest link in any garment or project.  Always leave tails when changing colors or adding yarn and work in your tails to avoid raveling.**

Personal Care Items and Crocheted Cotton Cloths Help Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Marjorie M for another fantastic and thoughtful donation.  Lots of always needed personal care items, socks...can't get too many of those, and crocheted cotton washcloths definitely a great item.  We use those cotton washcloths in a variety of ways.

When folks first come to shelters they often have nothing and so personal care items and a nice washcloth to shower can really mean alot.  As some live in shelter housing the cloths can be used both for baths, and doing dishes.  When folks transition from shelter to permanent housing, those washcloths are used again in welcome home packs....AND our men and women living outdoors are always appreciative of them too.  Our friend Rae makes packs for them, packs they can take on the go; as they often have to.

Many thanks Marjorie, we surely appreciate your on going support of Ohio's Homeless and others in need.

Donating Personal Care Items and Crochet Cotton Washcloths

Box 1 from our good friend Marjorie M, lots of wonderful personal care items being donated.  The nice little first aid kits...great idea.
50 crocheted cotton washcloths of every imaginable color filled Marjorie's 2nd box of donations.  Wonderful mix of both male and female colors Marjorie.  These are a HUGE hit at the shelters.  These cotton washcloths get used when folks first come into the shelters with little more then what's on their backs for showers, they get used again as families move into temporary housing in the shelters for both showers and dishcloths, and they get used again when moving out packs are compiled when folks transition from shelter living to their permanent housing situation...again for showers and for dishes.

Keep up the good work Marjorie!

Folks if you didn't get a chance to see it, please scroll back 2 post and read about the happiness challenge for August in addition to our need of mittens and hats....the really tie in together.  AND scroll back 3 posts if you missed it, I posted some numbers about where we were with donations at this time last year compared to where we currently are.  I think it will help you see where the need lies, as well as see how well we've done in some areas.

Thank you all.

Crocheting to Over Come Grief

A few days back I shared my story of how when and where I learned to knit and crochet.  A few days later I shared Sandie P from Louisiana story.  And now I'm sharing a beautiful story from our friend, Marjorie M.  It truly touches me, and while I knew some of this from our first couple of email exchanges it still touches me to think about it again.  Here are Marjorie's words.
No really big exciting story here. I learned to crochet because they told me I couldn't, due to being left handed.  Elder Aunts and my Mother taught my sisters but not me.  I watched from across the room and could see it in reverse.  Did it opposite of the right handers. I crocheted basic stuff for a few years then quit when I got married and had two babies and a job.

My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer on May 9 , 2011 he passed away on June 19th of the same year.  That was such a confusing, tragic time for me that I was looking for something to keep me sane. My younger sister sent me some yarn and a hook and I started crocheting again. I am not good at it, but can't even tell you the number of hours I spent sitting in his chair crocheting. Really believe it saved my life.  When I came across your charity by accident, it seemed like something I was supposed to do, being in Ohio where he was from.  He loved street people and the homeless and was always stopping to give some guy a few bucks or a cigarette.  I am still not able to read a pattern, but make terrific grannie squares, have taken a class,  to learn basics, and now belong to a crochet club. maybe I will improve over time.

the reason i check in with you each morning is that my dogs get me up at 6 a.m.  when i let them out i get dressed and turn on my computer at the same time. i hit the button to your site as the first thing i look at. then i tweet my granddaughter with a report on the weather for the day, before school.  i am a creature of habit. same thing starts each day.  therefore when your site is the same for a day or two i notice.

good talking  with you, hope you get lots of interesting stories on your new project. thanks again for all you and rae do to help the Ohio homeless.
**Marjorie, you would not be the first who turned to knitting or crocheting for comfort.  I had yarn in my hand all the time I sat beside Mom during her long hospital days before she passed.  I've read many books who's theme was in fact how they got through my learning to knit or crochet, or the comfort a group brought to them during difficult times.  You certainly honor your husband by sitting in his chair and caring for people from his homestate.  And, finding my blog perhaps wasn't by mistake...we all are guided, sometimes we just don't know it.  We're thrilled you've joined us, and shared your touching story.  Don't sell your crochet skills short my friend.
**please email me your story, how, when, where and why did you learn to knit or crochet?**

A Potpourri Donation Helps many

Wonderful donation here from our good friend Marjorie M.  I love the variety.  It's a real potpourri.   Marjorie has crocheted 20 cotton washcloths, an item always well received at all the family shelters we deliver to.  In addition to her hand crafts Marjorie has sent socks for both men and women (Rae will be thrillejd), razors, shaving cream, plastic forks, sandwich size zip-lock bags, and first aid kits.  I never thought of first aid kits but feel these compact items will be greatly appreciated by Rae as she cares for the folks living out in the elements.  Yes, it's close to summer folks, but in the last week we've had horrible fog, nights close to freezing, an abundance of rain, and a couple of days that were hot.  The weather this time of year here in Central Ohio is tough when you're without a roof over your head.

**June is slipper month, be sure to check out the slipper tab above, before you begin knitting and crocheting**

**Email me details of when, how etc you learned to knit or crochet, please don't leave the details in the comments below**

*Oh and please remember to attach a size tag to ALL hats.  Use string, yarn, safety pin.  Labels don't have to be fancy folks, but knowing the size is really needed by all the shelters, as well as schools to know how to store and distribute to the appropriate people in need.

Ohio's Homeless Appreciate Marjorie M. from Minnesota.

Believe I've posted this cute cartoon before, but I know not everyone visits the blog daily, (though I'd love it if they did); so thought it was worth a 2nd posting.

We recently had a contest and Marjorie M. from Minnesota was one of the 4 winners.  To date, I've only heard back from 3 of the 4 winners.  Will give a few more days to hear back from the 4th winner.  I thought it might be nice to learn a little bit about each other, so wanted to share.  Marjorie is a crocheter...must look for a crochet cartoon sometime...she started donating to our cause, keeping Ohio's homeless warmer and safer back in the fall of 2012.  She's helped us in a variety of ways.  She crochets and donates, she's recruited additional pairs of helping hands by getting a Girl Scout Troop involved, and snagged her sister, Kari S from Wisconsin as well.  Additionally, she is extremely supportive with her visits to the blog, spending time reading and commenting and is a fabulous cheerleader always with something thoughtful to say about her fellow crocheters and knitters and others who support our cause.

Thank you Marjorie!  Please keep up the good work, and I hope you enjoy the little comic.

Girl Scouts do more then Cookies

A while back you may remember our friend Marjorie M from Minnesota's connection to The Girl Scouts.  They've done it again.  The girls crocheted cotton wash cloths and slippers.  Marjorie helped them out by mailing their thoughtful donation and she added personal care items and socks.  For some silly reason, I took 2 pictures of the same thing...the slippers and socks and none of the personal care items and cotton washcloths.  Had a dumb attack apparently when I was photographing.  As you know, posts are written and placed in que and so the items have already been delivered by the time you'll read this post.  I'm working several weeks ahead on posts, so didn't realize in time to take another photograph.  Sorry girls.  I can tell you there were lots of different colors and I was thrilled to see so many of them were manly colors.

Thank you Girl Scouts, and Marjorie.

*March will focus on afghans and rain poncho's.  In addition to the afghan I assemble (or get help assembling) from your donated squares you can knit and or crochet completed afghans.  You can also make a quilt.  Guideline for colors and size etc can be found in the

Girls Scouts do More then Sell Cookies

Quick, what's the first word........the very first word that comes to mind when someone says and you hear, or you see, or you read the words, Girl Scouts?  I know.......dumb question....the answer is of course COOKIES.  We all have our personal favorites and probably order from several Girl Scouts every year.  My own, Darling Daughter was never in the Girl Scouts (nor was I); but she did spend an entire summer in a floor-less tent as a Camp Counselor at a Girl Scout Camp.  She even checked the kiddo's daily for Ticks...because of Lime Disease.  She was a Girl Scout Camp Counselor in Connecticut in the neighbor city where the disease originated.

But, look above.  I don't see cookies, I see slippers, hats, socks, and personal care items for people in need.  Homeless and those in need in the shelters in Ohio will benefit from a groups of 13-17 year old Girl Scouts from Minneapolis.  These girls were affected by a tornado in 2011.  The girls and their families and friends received helped during a time in need.  The know first hand what it means to help someone in need.  To pay back the girls wanted a special Christmas project.  The girls in the troop didn't all know how to crochet, but they learned in order to help others less fortunate.  WOW....isn't that what we all would like our teenagers to learn?  To help others, to help others less fortunate.

The Girl Scout Troop did just that.  That learned to crochet and they made 33 hats of various colors.  Some hats are stripped, some are solid, and some are crocheted with variegated yarn.  Please click to enlarge to see what these young ladies accomplished.

Additionally, they crocheted 7 pairs of slippers, and 1 headband.

Our good friend, Marjorie organized the donation, and added personal care items and socks and took care of the postage for The Troop.  Well done Marjorie.  Thank you for making the connection, and spreading the word, and thank you for making it possible for a group of young people to give back.  That's what I call a win win situation.

Sister Join Forces to Support Ohio's Homeless

Our friend Marjorie M from Minnesota has been busy spreading the word of our need and has recruited her sister, Kari S from Wisconsin to be our newest pair of helping hands.  How awesome is that!  When the awesome sisters got together for the recent Thanksgiving Holiday, Kari past along these 2 boxes of crocheted and knitted goodies to Marjorie who got them in the mail to us.  AWESOME!

You can see a lots of variety in her hats, and scarves.  She also included some personal care items, and headbands.  We're thrilled to have you join us Kari S from Wisc, and hope to see you often here at Bridge and Beyond.  And thanks too Marjorie for helping us out by recruiting your sister, well done!  Marjorie dedicated this wonderful donation to her husband, John's memory.  I'm sorry for your loss, Marjorie.  I'm sure he feels honored to have you remember him this way.

Keep up the good work ladies!

Helping Hands from Minnesota aid Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Marjorie M from Minnesota, your thoughtful donation of cotton washcloths, scarves, gloves, and personal care items is fabulous.  Each and every items so needed and appreciated.  The value of soap, razors, toothbrush kits is truly more then any of us can relate to.  My husband and daughter and I used to camp, and having the ability to clean up...to shower, heavenly!

Please keep up the good work.

Remember folks, when you need to give your hands a rest from knitting or crocheting, please spend time on the blog.  It helps the blogs placement with search engines which in turn helps us reach more people who have helping hands....that means we're able to help more people.  I know many of you do come and read, but are shy and don't leave comments.  PLEASE, please do leave comments.  Let us know you were here, support each other's work by leaving comments.  We all enjoy that, AND when you leave comments, that helps the blog even further.  You do not need to be a blogger to leave comments, it doesn't compromise your security.  Beneath the post click the word comment, a white box pops up, type your comment in that box, then click the drop down box and select the option that says name and url, leave your first name and last initial (no need to leave a full name unless you want to), leave the url space blank (normally that's where a blog address would go).  That's it, quick and easy.  It does truly help us, so please leave a comment and encourage your friends to do the same, please avoid using the anonymous signature option in the drop down box, that doesn't help us at all.  In fact it usually triggers the spam feature.

Help us spread the word of the need, send your friends....even if they're not knitters and crocheters to our blog.  You never know who might want to help in some capacity.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
