Hats for Homeless

Pick and size and color.......I think Tristi K. got it covered with the donation of crocheted hats.  Beautifully made, and nicely tagged with size.  Thank you Tristi.  Wish we could have connected, and hope we can next time.  It's always nice to catch up over a cup of tea.  A fun mix of hats for the school kids, including some nice darker colors for the boys.

Thank you and please keep up the good work.  Not only will 20 kids be warmer, but they'll look great with this donation.

Today, marks the end of the month of February.  Hard to believe it, time goes so quickly.  Tomorrow begins our focus on Men.  For the months of March and April our focus will be men and their needs.  Think dark, solids, sturdy, and warm for the men living under the bridges, and those in the shelters.  Men need hats, scarves, mittens, and slippers; as well as personal care items and store bought socks.

Donations from Neighboring West Virginia

Thank you Kathy U from West Virginia for this thoughtful donation.  Kathy's knitted hats, scarves, and slippers.  Thank you Kathy for tagging your hats and slippers with the size, much appreciated.  I love the nice variety in hat sizes you made...something for a variety of head sizes.  I'm partial to those hats that stretch so much.  Nicely done!

Please keep up the good work.

Another bright donation from our good friend RoseMarie.  Personal care items, slippers, hats, and a headband.......but then you all knew that.  We all know her signature mark of trim and flowers.  Thank you RoseMarie, as always we're thrilled to have you among us and know you'll continue to be supportive.

Folks, please let me encourage you all to scroll back 3 posts.  There are 2 posts I'd truly like you all to read, and comment on.

Funky Fall Afghan Needs a Bath

Funky Fall is in need of the final tail being tucked in and then it can get a bath.  LOL, Remember all ghans need to be laundered and blocked, it really finishes them, makes them softer, and removes all the dander, oils, hair, dust etc that settles on yarn while in the stores, in our stash, and during the time we work on our projects.  Really this is true of almost everything we make, but a ghan probably the most because it tends to take longer to make and therefore has more time to pick up dust, odors, dander etc.  Hats and scarves really do well in the laundry too.  It's easy to do a whole load at one time if you have a large box of something you've completed.  Though more directions say dryer normal heat I dry items on LOW only, and ghans I lay out to block.  No, I'm not saying I launder everthing you all send, I never get done; but do encourage you to think about how old the yarn is you're using for items and whether or not it should be laundered when completed.

If you've not been here lately, please scroll back and read the last 2 posts, one is about a must read book for all of us involved with helping The Homeless, and one is about Blog Blitz.  Both are worth your time to read and share something dear to us all.

In a few days, we'll switch our focus from kids to Men.  March and April will focus on Men.  Hats, scarves, slippers, mittens for men; as well as store bought socks for men, and personal care items (and cotton knit or crochet washcloths).  Please check the working calendar, and the individual tabs across the top of the blog

Red Rover Red Rover Send.......Right Over

Some of you may have noticed this new badge posted in the right hand sidebar and wondered what it was all about.  As I was out blog walking (which I love to do) a few days ago, spotted it and was curious.  Reading the blog post about it (which you can do by clicking on the badge in the sidebar), it made me smile.  It talked about fun childhood games that if you're as old as me ....you well remember.  Games like hide n seek, Red Rover Red Rover and just plain playing outdoors with the kids in the neighborhoods.  I loved that time.

I've been very blessed to re-connect with some friends from that time of innocence.

Now don't those pictures take you back?  Middle front row in this picture is Wendy, some of the pictures above show Pam and her sister Debbie.  We played jax, jump rope, Red Rover, flashlight tag etc.  Sweet memories.  The Blog Blitz is reminiscent of those times and those good feelings.

We here on Bridge and Beyond reach out to others each and everyday with each item we knit, or crochet or loom.  I wonder if those folks have such sweet memories?  Sadly, I doubt the children involved do.  Living under bridges, on the streets, and in shelters doesn't give a child the opportunity to play safely in the neighborhood the way we all did.  How blessed we all were, and continue to be with the memories of those times.

As you knit or crochet, please take time to give thanks for these special times in your life and know that each item you make shares a piece of your heart with someone in need......someone less fortunate.  Thank you Don at Cruising Altitude (Blog Blitz) for helping me remember those times.

Some of you reading this blog, may say ...I don't knit, crochet or loom and therefore I can't help.  Not True!  You can help.  You can share this blog post on your blog, in an email, on twitter and or Facebook to help spread the word.  You can donate by saving all those little bottles of samples that come in the mail, and or little shampoo's etc from your travels.  Those are ways to help, that don't cost a thing, just some time.  If you have the financial where with-all, you can purchase socks, something always in need.  Please note each item we knit, crochet, loom, collect and donate has it's own tab across the top of the page.  Please let me know if you have any questions about how you might help the homeless and those less fortunate.

Share Cropper and how Denver becomes Homeless

Though this pictures shows the Kindle edition of this book, I read it in paper back, thanks to one of my high school friends, Joy D who crochets beautifully and donats here on Bridge and Beyond.  I wasn't able to save the picture in the paper back version, thus you see the Kindle Edition.  Which by the way, was listed as 3.99 today (FEb 17th) when this post was written and scheduled.

Joy was good enough to send me this book with one of her thoughtful donation.  A bit embarrassed to say, I put it on my shelf and sorta forgot about it.  Found it when cleaning off my shelf a short while ago.  WOW, what a book.  I highly suggest it to you all who give of yourself to help the cause here on Bridge and Beyond.  Buy it in either paper book format or e-format for your Kindles etc.  And when you're done, pass it along to someone else.  The book is very moving and so very appropriate for all of us.

It's a true story about a man who was homeless, Denver and his friend Ron, a man who sells million dollar art.  It's both a sad and uplifting story all rolled into one.  Does it solve homelessness......NO!  But, I think you'll find it well worth the time to read it.  It's a New York Times Bestseller.

A question keeps popping into my head, as I think about this book, "Do you smile, or speak when you encounter a homeless person, or do you avert your eyes......afraid they'll ask for money?  The answer for me is yes...yes to all those answers; but this book challenges us to think differently.  I care, and so you do; thus we knit and crochet and pray and donate........

Would love to know who's familiar with or read the book and what your thoughts were.

Thank you Sue F, Clapping for Mittens

Thank you Sue F for this awesome donation of mittens, slippers, and scarves.  All necessary items that are so very much appreciated.  Big special thanks too for tagging slippers and mittens with size.  Your mittens are so nicely made.........I always get excited when we get mittens, as they're just not something we can all make.  Well done, please keep up the good work.

And with this post, I am now current with all the goodies that came in during hubby and my vacation to Hilton Head.......where sadly it ended up being almost as cold as here in Ohio.  Sooooooooo bizarre for that area where normally he can even go golfing in the winter months.  If you'd like a break, want to take a virtual no packing no laundry type vacation, hop over to my travel blog.  Traveling Suitcase

The Yellow Rose of Texas

Say Howdy to our newest pair of helping hands from the state of Texas.  We're thrilled to have you join us and appreciate this thoughtful donation to keep Ohio's Homeless warm.  She's asked to be anonymous (though I have her name...remember that's necessary).  Though it's a long way from Rose season, as we have mounds of snow on the ground that I wonder when and if it will all melt.......the song Yellow Rose of Texas popped into my head as I posted this picture from our newest Texas contributor.

**Stay tuned for donations from:   Sue F from Ohio.

Due to the holiday (editing this post on Presidents Day), I'm delayed a day picking up donations from the post office that arrived last week.  So, if you mailed a donation last week and are wondering what happened, if it arrived etc....stay tuned for the next couple of days, please and thanks.

Crocheting and Donating

Thank you Blanca T for this thoughtful donation of crocheted goodies.  You've been busy!  Colorful crocheted cotton cloths/towels are always well received by all the shelters we donate to.  She's also donated hats and scarves.  Click to enlarge folks so you can see the details in the scarves.  I believe this style is called a keyhole scarf?

Thank you and please keep up the good work of warming Ohio's Homeless.

Folks we're still highlighting the needs of kids until the end of this month, February; but remember that doesn't mean you can't send items for kids other times of the year.  Please check the working calendar tab anytime you need an idea of what to make, or wonder what our highlighted items or groups will be.  The current highlight, always appear in the moving marque across the top of the blog.

Donations from Florida Warm Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Sandra R from Florida.  Sandra has been a long time wonderful supporter of our homeless here in Ohio.  She does beautiful work.  Special thank you Sandra for tagging everything with size...that's always appreciated.  Love the variety of sizes, and colors in your hats.  Look how many heads will now be warm because of you.

Please keep up the good work!

As I typed this scheduled post, I'm happy to say it's finally warmed up to 23!  Feels like 12, but it was only 12 and felt like 2 when I got out of bed this morning; soooooooooo I guess that's better.  lol  Marginally.  I can't keep my hands and fingers from cracking from the cold, can't imagine how much worse it is for those without a nice warm roof over their heads.

Warm and Toasty

As promised a better picture of this afghan from Diana K.  YOu saw it all folded up last time, and here it is (already tabulated), laid out after being laundered.  Who doesn't love a ripple.  A ripple and granny squares aren't those the first two designs that pop into your head when you think of a traditional afghan!

Awesome work, again Diana K, thank you.

Donations from Barbara F

Apologies if you made it here this am, before I got the post finishef folks.  I had the picture and the count and a note to myself to finish the post.  Barbara F has donated a vareit of hat styles, please click to enlarge the picture so you can see the details better.  Different sizes, different colors and different styles.  She's also donated scarves and cotton washcloths.

Many thanks Barbara, please keep up the good work.

As I edit this post, it's snowing......yes AGAIN!  It's currently 23 degrees, but feels like it's 13.  I've been lucky enough to escape the cold and snow for a bit, traveled with hubby for business and then we added a few days at the end of business to relax and it was so nice to be where there was nice weather.  The snow mounds from plows etc are now about 4 feet high here to give you a feel fr the amount of snow that's piled up.

Please keep the homelss, and those without proper heat living on the edge during this very difficult time of year in your thoughts and prayers and do what you can with your needles and hooks.  They don't really have a way to escape the conditons.

Donations from California for Ohio's Homeless

Dianne L from California has been busy.  See what I mean?  She's crocheted lots of goodies here from cotton washcloths (love how you fold and tie them, makes such a nice package), scarves, and a variety of hat sizes to fits lots of different sized heads.  AND, thank you thank you Dianne for labeling all the hats with the size.  That is truly appreciated.

Folks, it's a simple thing, but do click to enlarge the picture and see what I mean about how Dianne packages the cotton washcloths.  They look so much more gift like, don't they!  Love the idea.

Please keep up the good work Dianne.

Funky Fall Travels

Once The Daisy Ghan was done I started working on Funky Fall (still opened to other names if someone has an idea).  It's attached, and one row of edging is done but believe it needs several, plus there are a few more ends to work in.  I may do a couple of rows of the turquoise then a row of orange and end with the turquoise?  Funky Fall traveled through Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North and South Carolina just like Daisy Ghan did.   I worked on this on the trip home.  Good thing hubby likes to drive, gives me plenty of crochet time.

If you missed reading about how to determine what's to lacy, please scroll back a post.

If you're working on hats, click HERE, for necessary information AND, you might enjoy using some of the patterns listed as well.

But, if you're working on scarves, there's a page for you also, click HERE.  Again patterns and necessary information for you.

Donations from Michigan

Thank you Sue S from Michigan for this thoughtful knitted donation for Ohio's homeless.  Hats, scarves, and personal care.......all needed items.  I really love the pretty green tweedy color, very very nice.  We so appreciate your on going support here on Bridge and Beyond.  Thank you for helping us help others.  Together we all make such a wonderful team.

2014 Donations:
Hats: 39+1=40
Scarves: 41+5=46

Misc. Items: include personal care, headbands, hand-warmers, cowls/gators/neckwarners and all meal prep related items, Dolls, associated items, stuffed/crocheted/knitted toys... etc aren't tabulated

Please remember to avoid using white, beige, light tan, and colors that will easily show the dirt; as well as open lacy stitches.  Unsure if your stitches are too open?

If you can easily see through your item, it's too lacy.  If when you pick it up you can easily put your fingers through your stitches......like above it's too lacy.  I love lacy, it's pretty and soft; but we're in need of sturdy warmth.  If you're using triple crochets please consider using doubles instead.  If you're using doubles and your stitches are still pretty open, switch to a smaller hook to tighten things up or amend your work to use more single crochets.  We all have different gauges so we must assess our work and make adjustments.

Please remember what fibers to avoid folks as you knit and crochet your special donations.  The only thing cotton fiber should be used for is the cotton washcloths.  Cotton isn't warm enough or durable enough for a hat, scarf and other items.  Wool and suede should also be avoided.  Washable wool however is wonderful!  Acrylic of course works for everything.  If you have questions about something, please check with me by using the contact form here on the blog, leaving a comment here on the blog, or emailing me at sandycrochet@gmail.com.

Donations from California aid Ohio's Cold Homeless

Dynamic Duo Sisters Donate

Here's a donation of crocheted hats and scarves from our dynamic duo...sisters, Wendy H from George and Catherine W from Florida!  Nice soft scarves and hats and some personal care items (soap).  There's a cute little ruffled edge to a couple of the scarves...click to see better folks.

As I typed this scheduled post folks it's 26 but with wind chill feels like 14 degrees.  We got snow AGAIN last night (about 7 inches), followed by more ice.  This winter is getting to be very tiresome.  I know Ohio isn't the only state being hit hard this year....enough already Mother Nature.  We could sure use some spring!

Peach Tree State Crochet Keeps Ohio's Homeless Warm

Take a good look folks at this wonderful donation from our good friend and supporter, Diana K from Georgia.  Hats, Scarves, and an afghan.  In order to get it all on the table to photograph you may not be able to see everything well...but please click to enlarge so you can see things in detail.  Nice solid colors, red, green, and blue....though I know it looks sorta purple on my computer, it's good old blue folks.  Wish I understood why blue's and purple's don't often come through well in pictures here on the net?

The scarves are very nicely sized for adults, both men and women; nice and wide and long enough to wrap up in.  Have gotten some pretty small scarves lately folks, so please recheck the scarf tab for the appropriate sizing.  Scarves should be no narrower then 4 inches wide and no shorter then 4.5 feet long for children, obviously longer for women and longer still for men.  I generally make scarves as tall if not taller then the person so they can be doubled up for warmth.  Teens should be as large as adults.

The ghan is red and green, a good ripple and we all love ripples.  Stay tuned for a separate picture of it on down the road  when I can lay it out in a more appropriate location.  Diana also included some personal care items (soap).

Thank you, please keep up the good work of keeping Ohioan's warm from Peach Tree State.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
