Matching Crocheted Hat and Scarf Donated

Thank you Victoria P for this matching crocheted hat and scarf set!  This will be so appreciated by the person it keeps warm.  Our temps here have been well below average and many people are in need of warm items.  Got another request just yesterday from the Holy Family Soup Kitchen.  We just recently made a delivery there, which they were thrilled to get; but indicated they really are in need of more.

For those new to the blog, or perhaps folks who've not read about Holy Family before.  They feed thousands of people each and every week and pass out our warm items to those waiting for a hot meal.  Sometimes it's men, sometimes it's women, and sometimes it's whole families in need.  Currently, the largest need is for men.

Thank you Victoria, please keep up the good work.

Crocheting from Minnesota Helps Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Liz E for the thoughtful donation of items for men.  We've been a bit light on hats and scarves sized and appropriate colors for men to meet several requests we've gotten.  Liz has crocheted and donated and tagged her donations!  YIPPEE, that always makes me happy.

Liz has been a long time supporter and many of you know her as minnesoda from The Ville.  Many thanks and please keep up the good work.

Today is Thanksgiving.

Today is Thanksgiving, thought you all might enjoy this retro picture.  It put a smile on my face, hope it does you as well.  But, laughter aside as you all gather around the table with friends, family, loved ones; please remember those with less to be Thankful for.  Those we knit and crochet for, those without a roof over their heads, or those with temporary shelter housing, those looking for work, those trying to put their families back together.

We have much to be Thankful for, one of those things each other.  Because together, we're able to do something that matters, together, we're able to use our collective skills and aid those in need.

There are many things I'm grateful for, no doubt you all feel the same; but truly one of the things I'm grateful for is YOU!

Crocheted Donations Help Ohioans in Need

Thank you RoseMarie for your thoughtful donation of personal care items, cotton washcloths, and crocheted hats and a scarf.  Thank you for your on going support of Bridge and Beyond.    We truly appreciate you.

Folks as I'm typing this scheduled post, I'm sitting with a lapghan on and a fleece.  It's cold!  It was 16 when I got out of bed this morning with a wind chill making it feel like 8.  As you knit and crochet, please double check the tightness of your stitches.  With temps and winds like that we need items not to be too open.  If you can see through, and or put your fingers through your stitches, please consider bumping down to a smaller size hook/needle in order to get a more solid item.

We'll be going a slightly different direction with our working calendar in the coming year, so please keep checking in.

Hats for Heads Help the Homeless

Thank you Linda W from Ohio for this wonderful donation of knitted hats!  Hats to fit adults and one for a child as well.  Really like the one pictures lowered left with the wide stretching ribbing...helps to fit different sized heads.  Very nice!!

Please keep up the good work Linda, warm heads make such a huge difference in someone's comfort, even in the cold outdoors.  It's currently 34 degrees, but feels like it's 26 degrees with the wind chill, so hats are most definitely needed and very much appreciated.

Autumn Colored Afghan Welcomes Homeless

Love the colors in this crocheted shell stitch afghan.  This will make a child, boy or girl very happy and is also sized well for a nice lapghan for any adult.  This beautiful afghan comes to us from the skillful hands of our good friend, Annemarie from New York.  When we donate afghans to The Homeless Families Foundation they make a wonderful "Welcome Home" gift to those families transitioning from shelter living to their permanent residence.  It's a way to celebrate the move, to congratulate them on making it happen, and a way to wish them the best of luck for the future.

Thank you Annemarie for your continued support of this cause.  We truly appreciate you here on Bridge and Beyond, and I know the recipients do as well.

Bridge and Beyond on Facebook

Are you on Facebook?  If so, have you joined our Bridge and Beyond Facebook Group there?
If not, please do.  Posts from here are linked there to aid you staying current with what's going on with Bridge and Beyond.  Thank you's and notices of donations received are also posted there.  When I can post there to let you know your donations arrived, I can do several at one time vs sending separate emails so it saves me time...let's you know sooner generally.  This blog will always be the primary source of information, items with their own tabs etc vs wading through posts there to find something; but..........it gives us another presence and helps build more awareness.

Visiting the blog, posting comments, visiting and posting and liking on facebook are all helpful and things you can do in between stitches...hint hint.  Some folks are on facebook who don't blog which also makes it helpful.

Are you a follower here on the blog?  If not, please become one; that's also helpful.

Please check the tabs for items you wish to make to be certain the item you make is an appropriate size, and color.  Remember pastels aren't a good idea, stay clear of white and ivory's tan's etc.  Is your fiber appropriate?  Anything requiring special attention ie. wool or specialty yarns that need special laundry instructions is a NO NO.  Is your item warm, solid without open airy stitches?  Remember, we're trying to keep people warm.  When in doubt, please ask.  Post a comment here on the blog, leave a note in the contact form, post a question on facebook, or email at sandycrochet@gmail.com.

Please check back, I'll be posting a bit of change for our working calendar with the coming year in mind.

The photo is one I've shared on facebook, so it's possible you've already seen it; but as it's seasonally appropriate and I'm not a fan of posts without pictures thought you all might enjoy this.  AND........if any of you make this for your Thanksgiving Meal, please let me know.  Take a photo, I'd love to post everyone's pictures.

I now return you to your yarn, hooks, and needles.

Homeless Men Need YOU

A little humor for you to enjoy while you're busy knitting or crocheting or buying yarn to knit or crochet.

Hope you enjoy this, I did when I saw it on facebook a couple of weeks back and saved it to my computer.  Thought I'd share this with you while I get caught up posting pictures and writing blog posts from your donations.

We've had 2 requests in the last 10 days for items needed folks.  One from our friend Rae who feeds the homeless living outdoors (mostly men) on Saturday mornings.  She needs hats and scarves and mittens.  A delivery was made to her; but she is in need of more.  Donations suitable for men have been down....so asking everyone to kick it up a notch, please and thanks.  Please remember items should be solid to be warm, dark solid colors best (so not to call attention to themselves and not to show dirt), and large enough to an adult male.

In addition, we've received a request from Holy Family Soup Kitchen.  I'll be able to make a small delivery based on what came in since making the delivery to Rae; but in both cased more is needed.

Items needed:
Hats
Scarves
Mittens

All items listed above are links to those tabs with specifics, as well as patterns that might be helpful to you.  PLEASE measure your scarves folks, small scarves just don't work well for the men.  PLEASE tag ALL hats and mittens with size and pair your mittens with a tie or safety pin.

Crocheted Donations and More for Ohio's Homeless

Our good friend, Cheryl S. sent several boxes.  In order for you to see her goodies I've taken separate pictures and made separate posts...grouping things as it were.  Scarves, hats, and cotton washcloths were in one box.
And in the 2nd box more goodies.  You can see lots of personal items, socks, slippers, and pouches to house personal care items.  Cheryl's made a wonderful blue kitchen set (upper right corner of the picture, please click to enlarge) with hot pads, dishcloth, dishtowel and towel hanger...can't think what those are callled.  Help me someone.  Won't that make a wonderful part of the welcome home packages.

Also, if you click to enlarge the photo you can see the nice pouches which will hold a good number of personal care items such as toothbrush and paste, combs, shampoo, soap etc.  Then please notice the lower left corner.

Here I blew it up for you.  A cute doll set which some little girl will be so thrilled with for Christmas.  The doll has cloths, some of which Cheryl crocheted, a blanket, a backpack, t-shirt....truly adorable.  She is soooooooo creative.  Even the little basket/basinette carrier the doll is in is crocheted.  Cheryl can you share a pattern?  I think others might like to make one...if not for Bridge and Beyond this Christmas for one of their wee family members.

I do wonder everyone's thoughts on doing some more of this type of thing, and the Christmas set from a few days ago HERE, for next season?  These aren't items to keep people home, they aren't necessary in that they aren't essentials; so please speak freely your opinion.  Does having a project like this for next year work with out mission?

Personal Care Items and Crocheted Cotton Cloths Help Ohio's Homeless

Thank you Marjorie M for another fantastic and thoughtful donation.  Lots of always needed personal care items, socks...can't get too many of those, and crocheted cotton washcloths definitely a great item.  We use those cotton washcloths in a variety of ways.

When folks first come to shelters they often have nothing and so personal care items and a nice washcloth to shower can really mean alot.  As some live in shelter housing the cloths can be used both for baths, and doing dishes.  When folks transition from shelter to permanent housing, those washcloths are used again in welcome home packs....AND our men and women living outdoors are always appreciative of them too.  Our friend Rae makes packs for them, packs they can take on the go; as they often have to.

Many thanks Marjorie, we surely appreciate your on going support of Ohio's Homeless and others in need.

A Crocheted Christmas Donation

Cheryl S has done it again!  Cheryl you are soooooooooo creative.  This is an awesome gift for one of our families.  A crocheted tree skirt........GORGEOUS, a set of Christmas towels and placemats and Christmas lights!  I truly would not have thought of this but am so glad you did.  Think how special this will be as a Welcome Home Gift for one of the families as they move into permanent housing  from the shelter housing around the holidays.  Every year as they pull out this special Christmas Tree Skirt they'll be reminded of how much someone cared, and wish them well for a bright future.

I'm making notes of some things we might want to do organizationally for next years special holidays.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AND KEEP THAT CREATIVITY FLOWING !

Crocheted Donation Perfect Timing for those in the Cold

Thank you Lori R for your thoughtful donation of crocheted goodies.  Lori has crocheted hats, scarves, mittens, and an afghan.  Whew!  she's been busy.  We've recently had a request for hats, as the weather has turned cold a bit early this year, so your timing is awesome.

Thank you Lori for tagging your hats with size, it's greatly appreciated by me, and by the many volunteers at the various shelters.

November is hat month folks, please take time and read the hat tab....even if you've donated to us before.  It's important our hats meet the needs in terms of size, colors, and fibers.

Crocheted Afghans Make Family's Feel Special

Thank you Cheryl S for this awesome donation of afghans for our Welcome Home Project.  If you're hear on the blog for the time, you may not know we supply afghans to family's through The Homeless Families Foundation as they transition from shelter living into their permanent housing situation.  It's a way to say, Welcome Home!  We wish you the very best going forward, to congratulate them for this important move.  Cheryl's work is fabulous and her heart is boundless.  Isn't this colorful afghan gorgeous!  Bright and cherry, sized nicely for a little girl to totally curl up  in, a teen cuddle in while doing homework or watching tv, and or a family to share.
I love the colors and the texture in this design and how masculine it looks.  This looks to be crocheted with front post triple crochets?  This is perfect for a family afghan, or for a male teen or adult.  Beautifully made Cheryl.
Adorable!  How pretty and pink this one is.  Some girl, teen or younger will be thrilled with this.
Don't stop scrolling folks, there's more.  Cheryl...did you get any sleep lately?  You must have the faster crochet hook ever....is it battery operated?  This gray striped ghan is a bit larger and will be an awesome family afghan, such nice colors.
AND........drum roll please.  Another one.  Made on diagonal.  Love the edging Cheryl, what stitch did you use?  These 5 crocheted afghans are a fabulous donation and will make 5 people/families feel very very special.

Thank you Cheryl for your dedication, please keep up the good work.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.

Where The People Who Donate Come From, is your state represented?
