Potpourri Donation for the Homeless

knitted items for homelessThank you James for your ongoing support and warming the homeless here in Central Ohio with your fabulous donation. What a potpourri it is. 3 pairs of mittens, 3 cotton wash cloths, 1 pair of nice warm socks, 4 pairs of adorable slippers, 4 hats, and 2 scarves. You and your knitting needles have indeed been busy since your move. WOW! Everything is wonderful, but I'm particularly fond of the cute pair of slippers right in the middle of the picture...red-blue etc. Click folks to enlarge the picture so you can see what I'm referring to. Additionally, let you eyes travel up and down and see the pictures where I flipped over a slipper so you could see the bottom. James has added something that's non skid. Really need to know what that is, how you apply it, where you find it etc. etc. In other words James, we need all the details! Please share.

I'd also love to know what pattern you used for those slippers in the middle...the shape is especially nice. Can you pass along your pattern, and or link to the one you used?

  2. What a bunch of great items! I am also looking forward to finding out what is used on the bottom of the slippers. I've always been a bit concerned at how slippery they can be. I especially like the scarf and hat on the left and the red and white mittens. Good work.

  3. Variety is the spice of life. Great stuff -- and I am always intruigued with our men knitters. I'd love to get some yarn in my husband's hands instead of the TV clicker!! Grteat work, Mr. Knitter! Is there ever a day when you don't get a fun box to open, Sandy?

  8. I THINK I've seen non-skid stuff to spray on those slipper bottoms, but not sure. Maybe look at a site that has things for handicapped or senior folks. I wonder how the stuff you put under rugs , sewn on, might work? And welcome, CrochetBlogger -- this is a lovely friendly group.

  9. The non-skid stuff on the bottom is called Plasti Dip and you can find it at Home Depot (or other such places.) Look for it in the paint section of the store. You apply it with a wooden stick, or plastic knife, or something - directions on the can are for dipping the end of a tool into the can, but it's pretty easy to figure out how to paint it onto the bottom of slippers. When you get it all over your hands - don't worry! It washes off easily.

I deliberately left the non-skid off the slippers for the young child size - as at that age sliding in slippers is all part of the point!

The pattern for the slippers in the middle is the same one I shared before, I just changed yarns at certain times of the pattern. It's Nola's Slipper pattern and it is very easy to adapt to other sizes by changing the thickness of the yarn and needle size.

    Thanks all!

  10. Thanks all for the visits, and comments, thanks James for all the good info. Next question is does the non skid stay on after the slipper is laundered?

  11. I've heard of, but not tried using puff paint (fabric paint) for non-skid applications. It wouldn't wash out,but not sure how cost-effective it would be.

  13. Way to go, James! Your knitting is wonderful and you are so right about the slippers for children. They do love to run and slide in them.

Where are You and Your Yarn From?

I'm trying to identify where everyone is from, partially for fun. Take a look at the map. Also, believe it will aid me in cases where we have several people with the same name. Please look at the lists of bloggers and non bloggers and see if I have the state you hail from. If not, please leave a comment and let me know.

Additionally, we've had help from Scotland, England, Germany Puerto Rico, Canada, and France! They don't appear on the map, but their help is still greatly appreciated.
